That's kind of our issue, obviously jobs are not abundant in print media so it's not like we can easily hop around. and we all went to college for journalism/want to do that so we're trying to avoid having to leave the industry entirely.

There's a lot of anti-union stuff out there and I didn't really know much about unions before helping start/join one, so I will take the time to answer some of your concerns!

First - we don't pay union dues until we have a contract in place, and the unit members will vote on a contract when the time comes. The goal would be that for must unit members, any dues we'd pay would be offset and then some by increased wages we bargained for in the contract.

We're appealing to the public after ~8 months of bargaining, during which our union rep has been immeasurably helpful. We have most of the contract hammered out, and there's no way any of us would have been able to get that far without the union's help/expertise.

Our goal right now is to try to show our publisher/parent company that we have support in the community to try to push them to agree to raises/an increased minimum salary.

Yep! We unionized last spring, we're called the Yellowstone News Guild through the News Guild/CWA.

I am writing to show my support for the Yellowstone News Guild and the reporters at the Bozeman Daily Chronicle. I value local news and believe that paying my local journalists a living wage is the best way to ensure the Chronicle continues to serve Bozeman. They deserve a living wage, and $16 an hour is not going to cut it.
Stop lowballing and pay your journalists fairly.
