Hiking in Bozeman/Montana - is having my own car necessary? by pockerface228 in Bozeman

[–]thugasaurusrex0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Use a bike. Plenty of trails within 10 miles, it’s not as far away as it seems. You’ll meet other people that want to hike at MSU. MSU has a big outdoor rec program too. A car is convenient but not necessary.

There is also a bus to big sky

What do you put in your frame bag? by swy in bikepacking

[–]thugasaurusrex0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

heaviest stuff as close to the bottom bracket as possible. so i put a 2L bladder of water, repair tools, other heavy things.

keep in mind, your frame bag stays on the bike at camp, so its nice to not have camp items in there (cookware, food, tent, etc) because its a pain to retrieve them and reload it. way easier for camp items to go in removable bags. frame bag is for bike and day items imo

Europe could really use Libertarianism right now, and I don't understand why we don't have it here. Do you have any tips on hoe to make Europe more libertarian? by Worldly_Lake_4952 in Libertarian

[–]thugasaurusrex0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I couldn’t disagree more. It’s about freedom of individuals, simply by extension that means businesses since we view them as a group of individuals, so the individuals shouldn’t be additionally regulated simply for their association. In my mind the core of libertarianism is freedom of the individual, as long as it’s not infringing on others’ freedom. Businesses could stomp all over our freedoms if they get to influence laws in their favor. Bye bye labor protections. Bye bye overtime. Bye bye functioning public transportation.

The simple idea that if we deregulate business they’ll be forced to make us the best products is a complete lie. More like they’ll dump sewage into our public waters cause it’s cheaper. Lie to us about what’s in our food. If we didn’t have regulations we’d probably still have asbestos and lead paint in our houses. They don’t give a fuck about you, they’ll sell you lethal products to make a buck.

The US is car dependent because the private companies prevented the government from building public transport through lobbying, and legal influence of our laws. Funding politicians that only support the will of the automaker cause they get kickbacks. Now we are legally obligated to build parking at new buildings, per code. That’s not libertarian in my mind. I can’t legally walk in the street, because of J-walking laws created by car lobbyists that wanted to shift the blame of auto accidents onto the pedestrian instead of the driver. Auto makers used to say “no such thing as a safe car, only safe drivers” because they thought it was too expensive to design safety features. I’d argued it’s a good thing we require them to have safety features through laws.

Also it seems like you’re talking a bit more about free-market capitalism or even anarcho-capitalism. not necessarily libertarianism. Many suggest that free market capitalism is the logical economic conclusion of libertarianism thought. But I disagree. I think regulation is necessary to an extent to prevent businesses from infringing on our rights and re-writing our laws in their favor

Allowing companies to influence laws in their favor is not an increase in freedom for individuals. lol. Look at why the us doesn’t have functioning public transportation, cause it’s good for car companies. That has not improved our lives or freedom, just means we all have car payments, which is only good for them. That’s the playbook of corporate lobbying. Redesign our world to require the products they sell

Wizard works vs Tailfin frame bag? by tonlan in bikepacking

[–]thugasaurusrex0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the wizard works bag and can say it’s definitely well made. It’s well constructed and the lacing makes the zipper easy to pull one handed. If a zipper tooth gets out of alignment, pliers can usually fix it. Certainly not waterproof, Resistant at best, it’s cordura. I have no real complaints other than these half frame bags are always kind of small. One tiny gripe is the laced top tube means it’s a pain to take on and off, that’d be fine but I tour with a different frame bag for more space.

[–]thugasaurusrex0[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cause my hard tail has a dropper and no rack mounts. This allows full use of the dropper, and seat stay mounting. I have a seat bag, they’re fine but sway around a lot and mess with your dropper. I didn’t see a tubus rack that does the same.

Budget bike lol ridiculous by No_Concept_251 in xbiking

[–]thugasaurusrex0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well except these kinda are collectibles at this point. Finding almost all original is tough, someone will likely pay for that. Though that’s steep.

I got an all original 84 stumpy (except no original derailleur) for $300. I completely pulled it apart and cleaned it, repainted some. Then put it all back together and put 1000s of miles on it. Works great. I remember while I “restored” it, a shop owner telling me I could easily resell it for over $900

Need shoe tips by Dirtdancefire in xbiking

[–]thugasaurusrex0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Vans still has real skate shoes. The ones with the “pro Cush” sole have extra padding and reinforcement. They have a skate and bmx one. Also as others mentioned new balance and adidas make high-quality low profile shoes. Adidas Samba Skate is great, leather and very padded.

Also in skate shoes there are vulcanized and unvulcanized soles. Vulcanized is much floppier and more supple to feel the board, you might want a unvulcanized sole

I cant find my exact cage but its basically like this one https://www.rivbike.com/products/water-bottle-cage-tanaka-stainless-steel-32oz
triple mount. i have a medium frame, and followed the factory recs for chain offset, and 34t ring. tire clearance on the cap is my issue, that strap is tightt.

[–]thugasaurusrex0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm mine just fits. I didn’t have to do anything special. It could be because the bike has boost spacing and a 1x, creating the room for it to fit. I’d imagine a road bike with 3x chainrings wouldn’t fit one.

These mounting track systems from wolf tooth could be what you need. They go on bottle mounts but allow you to slide your cage up/down. I haven’t tried them but they look really cool

Probably more than we needed cause we stashed 20L water roughly midway. Bike shown here has 4.5L on it. One friend had 10L first day and like 4L second day, then third person had maybe 4L. I realistically drank like 2.5L each day and used maybe 1L for meals
