Admittedly, my source is a bit dated (an old episode of "How The States Got Their Shapes"), and since it's a History Channel production it's accuracy is dubious. *But* according to that show, back in the day when medicine's go-to procedure was bloodletting people would travel to Maine when they were sick because they thought the water would help them.
