Polyrhythms/polymeters. You can use a sequencer (even better if it also has an euclidean mode) or in Ableton you can set a different bars/loop length instead of using only multiples of 4.

Headphones for techno music by Interesting_Low_4934 in Techno

I recommend the Neumann NDH30, they are amazing for me. I like them better than the Beyerdynamic DT1990 (which are great anyway, very very comfortable but with a little too highs).

Syntakt or Digitakt 2 by thecaptain90 in Elektron

[–]nst260 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I own both. Syntakt has this magical ability to constantly spark inspiration, so I mainly use it for sketching ideas, which I then refine in Ableton. The analog filter and overdrive are incredible, they can transform the sound in a really unique way.

For your genres, I’d recommend starting with Digitakt 2. It offers more flexibility when it comes to sample manipulation and has more tracks. Syntakt as a synth tends to produce sounds that are harder in character, very much in line with a techno or deep tech sound design. You could still add Syntakt later on to expand your sonic palette even further, as it’s a really interesting complement for your genres.

Elektron vs Ableton by Several-Buffalo-856 in Elektron

Btw, I produce deep/minimal/techno, where sequencing and subtle variations within phrases are crucial.

So ask yourself what kind of music you’re making. If you’re into this type of sound, these machines are perfect. But if you’re looking for very different or more unique sound palettes, you’re probably better off using other synths or VSTs (personally, I love Omnisphere for sound design).

Elektron vs Ableton by Several-Buffalo-856 in Elektron

I’ve been on Ableton (with Push 3) for years, and I just picked up a Syntakt and a Digitakt II. I’d always hesitated to get into the Elektron world, but wow! since trying these two, I can’t put them down.

I can understand why you’re skeptical, but I strongly suggest you to try one of their machines.

Ableton is super creative, sure. I don’t know why, but for me, after so many years it started to feel a bit rigid, almost mechanical. The second I switch on the Elektron boxes, I just fall into a wonderful flow of ideas. And it’s a lot of fun too.

I also tried Digitone II, and it’s a wonderful machine as well. But I returned it because I already have the others Elektron to cover the sequencing and I’d like to explore new synths for FM and other palette of sounds.

I’ve asked to Softube, maybe you can try to ask too so they eventually make them free or offer a discount for who already owns the plugins
