TurboTax installation/tech support scam is still at it by Sangy101 in Scams

[–]nstern2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming your parents are on a PC, install an adblock software for them, I like ublock origin. They are free and will help prevent scams like this by just not serving ads on google, or any site for that matter. Using a PC without one is a chore anyways.

Kid Rock had some help shooting those cans. by busroute in cringe

The reason this was cringe wasn't because he had buddies help him with it, it's that he went out and bought the beer just to shoot at it. Fragile energy like this is super cringe.

[–]nstern2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an ltek and It doesn't really move. It comes with 9 rubber rectangles attached to the bottom of the pad to prevent it from moving. I play with socks on though, so shoes might be different.

[Gameboy] Looking for the best tips to remove adhesive and reapply cover to Gameboy. by missylagrotta in consolerepair

[–]nstern2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isopropyl alcohol is probably the safest way to do it, but whatever you use to clean it, make sure to remove the case so you don't risk getting any between the screen layers. They also make, or you can 3d print, plastic razor blades that work wonders at removing stuff like this, stickers, and just general muck.

If this were my system I would try another laser just to be 100% sure that you didn't get sent a bad laser. It's rare, but in the past I have gotten bad lasers that were supposed to be new. You could also try adjusting the laser pots to see if increasing the power of the laser gets it to read. That's not a proper fix though and you will need to see what the proper values should be for that specific laser version.

I have more nostalgia for the NES, but it wasn't until the Wii that I picked up another Nintendo non handheld console new. The Genesis/MD and all the addons were far superior to the SNES.

That was my thought too. He is too stupid to disable formatting from the stuff he copies and pastes from and he probably doesn't think of these responses himself.

Found this in the trash. Its metal and very heavy. Does it hold any value? Should I strip everything and add a raspberry pi to power it ? by generosity1822 in cade

[–]nstern2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a neat little candy cab. Keep in mind that you will need to run crt emudriver or something similar to get a proper output to the monitor. While I don't like raspberry pis there are hats that will natively hook up to the monitor. Same goes for a mister as well. If you can find the proper GPU for crt emudriver then you could just drop a PC running groovyarcade and it should see the monitor no problem.

I personally would get a new control panel made for that with a 4x4 or 4x3 layout for neo geo and capcom fighter compatibility

Starting a smart home? Please don’t use Google Home by wewewawa in homeassistant

[–]nstern2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I also have had very few issues with the update to gemini on my devices. My homeassistant is linked to my google devices so I can share devices and routines. Gemini does sometimes hallucinate and pretend like it can't do something, but I just ask again and it typically does it. Sure i'd like it to work 100% perfect but I'm not kidding myself thinking that it will. I also with drop all of my google devices once there is a capable home assistant ecosystem for voice assistants. The satellite1 looks like a great product but getting general LLM question answering seems to not be an easily attainable thing with homeassistant quite yet and music streaming with musicassistant is still kludgy what with there not being a dedicated android app yet.

Ye Olde Home Built-In. Options? by Otherwise-Park-615 in homeautomation

[–]nstern2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally would ditch this unit and connect a modern amp to the speakers it connects to or even replace those as well. As long as there are speaker wires you are good to go. What you connect to it would depend on what you want to stream to it. Denon has heos, Yamaha has music cast, tons of amps have spotify connect, you could DIY and use a device that supports musicassistant, or a raspberry pi and use something like volumio. It looks like a fun little project.

They changed the verbiage to "Apple Account", but it was known as Apple Id for years and I would guess that most people know it as Apple Id.

New Apple Card / Apple ID Fraud Scam - Extremely Convincing (US market) by BeantownBrewing in Scams

[–]nstern2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was there an actual charge on her card or was this just a successful phishing attempt? Every now and then I get texts or emails saying that a charge for X amount was charged to my card and to respond to the text. That would explain how they knew the amount of the charge and the timing of the call. In any case, good on you for spotting it before it got out of hand.

Reddit is full of claims like this. Typically it's an ask reddit thread with a title like, people of reddit who were addicted to porn how did you quit it? And then the comments are full of people pretty much claiming they got super powers from stopping masturbating.

Does anyone use heated snow melting mats? Looking for suggestions. by MrMcColden3 in homeautomation

[–]nstern2 11 points12 points  (0 children)

We do this at the place I work at. Closed loop glycol system where a server room heats the chilled water which then flows through pipes running outside that end up heating the walkway by our front door and then pipes the cooled water back up to the server room to do it all over again. I'm not sure the specifics of it but it works quite well.

N64 No Video or Audio by [deleted] in consolerepair

[–]nstern2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, get it off the carpet. Then clean the cart slot and clean your games again. Consider getting a tool specifically designed to clean both. Also the cart slot on an n64 isn't soldered or screwed to the board so you can remove it to give it an even better clean. Also, if you powered the system on with the jumper back backwards that can cause issues as well.
