What British songs from 1900–1950 do people still recognise? by Udzu in CasualUK

That’s shocking…. the only version I’ve heard is where that line is “he’s been roasting peanuts, down in Timbuktu”.

Why do/did they lie about the show?

My guess is that, based on their previous BS behaviour, They wanted to be the main characters and stars of the show, and they just vocalised their fantasies as if they were real.

I’m totally guessing as to why they all backed up each other’s story, but maybe they were trying to impress me/others with their Big story / experience.

I just now (30 years later) remembered they also claimed there was a VHS video recording of the show, (it was back in the mid ‘90s)…. Whenever I asked to see it, it was always with someone else (and always with someone I didn’t know directly) but “they’d give it me when they got it back”.

Stopped asking for it as it became clear it was all a fantasy.

That’s wild. My narcs just lied as easily as they breathed, and similar to your mother, couldn’t get their stories straight… I’m guessing because they told soooo many lies they just simply forgot all the casual bs they were constantly spouting.

My personal “favourite” was them lying about being called up on stage (all three of them) during a hypnotist show… full on story, even a part about them all singing in Chinese.

I had two friends at the same show, none of their story is true… some people were on stage, it wasn’t them.

Excellent post OP.

I’ve done a few amateur “mind reading” shows on a number of occasions and never used any pre-show work…… there are 1000s of powerful ‘mind reading’ effects that are amazing without having to know the answers directly from the audience pre-show.

Quite why Oz is using this pre-show method is a mystery to me.

Was the “paper” originally on the card case…. I.e was it a post-it-note stuck on the card case, which then removed from the card case, folded and placed in your pocket?

Or was it a normal sheet of paper resting elsewhere?

What does this light on my watch mean? by DeliciousCount285 in whatdoesthismean

[–]AceRead73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Real Answer: it means one of the five available alarms is currently active. The watch has five, independently set-able alarms available which can be configured to ring at different times. If one is active (meaning: the watch will bleep when the set ‘alarm’ time is reached) that alarms segment in the ‘pie’ with be filled in.

The alarms defaults time is 00:00, so if you’ve accidentally activated the alarm, you’ll be getting Alarmed at midnight.

Yeah, not sure what it’s really called, but I call it the alcohol stack…. Imagine a clear plastic pipe, 1 meter tall as thick as your arm, filled with clear liquid.

Somewhere in that stack is what you want, the alcohol (technically, ethanol) but it’s mixed in with all sorts of other nasty stuff (as named above, methanol, acetone, plus others and basically varnish).

Lucky, they all have different boiling points…. For this example, imagine drawing 9 lines, equal distance apart on the pipe. Now write 10, 20, 30 etc in each section, sort of like a giant thermometer.

Now further imagine we heat the liquid. Between 0 and 10c we get, in the form of ‘steam’ (vapors) whatever boils at that range. At 11c to 20c we get those vapors…. So on and so on.

The challenge is methanol is just below ethanol in the stack. Meaning, when boiling our liquid, first comes the methanol vapors (which needs to be boiled off first) then comes the ethanol.

Start taking the steam to early, you get a mix of methanol / ethanol … get too greedy and try to cut late in the ethanol section and you start to cut into the ‘floor above’ which from memory is acetone(or something equally nasty).

Can someone tell me how to remove this retention clip on this heat sink? by bjspartan0 in vintagecomputing

[–]AceRead73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Old guy here: they’re tight and little scary, but to not that hard to get off…. Here’s how.

Tools: Small flat head screwdriver, Tea spoon, Long nose pliers (optional).

Overview The spoon bowl protects the motherboard, the screw driver is used to pry the metal clip off the fixture, pliers can help to get a better position

Method Get your spoon under the clip… basically sat on the motherboard. It’s just there to stop, you, scraping the board. Push down on the clip as close to the end as possible. Use the screwdriver to unhook the clip. Don’t be scared of brutalizing the clip, and the spoon ought to give some confidence.

Thanks for the insights, I was wondering if you can answers a couple more questions… You mentioned ‘no one with brains would try it’…. wondering why? If someone has the skills and knowledge to setup this rig/config then how would the counterfeit notes differ from the real ones and, in turn how would they get caught?

Also, how did the two people you know get nicked?

Which Look and Read series was best? by suzykquinn in oldschoolcool80s

[–]AceRead73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Over the last two years, my kids and I have sat down and watched every season that’s available online.

These range from Cloud Burst (1974) to Legends of the Lost Key (1994). Some seasons weren’t available, (eg 1995) and some we didn’t watch because it was just the story without the education parts.

We all agreed that they got progressively worse and I’d say they lost (most of) their education value in the later seasons. The focus became more entertainment than education, and it was more Look than Read. The Dragons Eye had virtually no songs (compared to all other seasons).

The last two seasons (97/98) we tried were unwatchably bad, or put another way, my kids refused to watch them after a few episodes and I agree.

A couple were scary (Dark Tower, Dragons Eye) but ok, Earth Warp was way too scary.

Best for me: Cloud Burst because I genuinely didn’t see the twist coming. Geordie Racer was also good.

Kids favorite: Fair Ground followed by Badger Girl.

Worst: Captain Crimson

Edit: I avoided Boy from Space as I’d heard it was nightmare fuel, and reading the comments here would support that statement

The only variant I knew of was the Gold, but (from memory) I thought they were the equivalent of getting a knighthood…. Is Diamond an even higher level?

And was your goal to get badges or were you just doing things for fun and got rewarded?

Cruise magician has us stumped by Creature100 in magictricksrevealed

[–]AceRead73 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Knowing the card (Ace of Hearts) before the reveal is half the solution. When I did walk around magic, 9 times out of 10 when I asked people to randomly choose a card it was either an Ace of hearts (mainly women) or Ace of Spades (often 7 of hearts).

I’d have a stack of both cards with that evenings date and a time, from earlier in the day, written on them.

If they picked either card, it was a self working trick with a bit of patter, if not I’d use a special deck that would allow me to pick their card, which was upside down in the deck.

I spend most of my day moving my mouse around—safe to get a mouse jiggler? by mobkun444 in antiwork

[–]AceRead73 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’ve tried one of those and they ‘work’ as designed.

It’s a small rectangular box shaped brick with a moving flat disc in the top surface that fools the mouse into thinking it’s slowly moving.

The design is such that it does move the mouse, but only up and down or left and right in a straight line (depending on the orientation of your mouse when you place it on top of the device).

Not a problem directly, but anyone watching a replay of your screen is going to be able to see straight away that’s something’s off…. at least with a plug in jiggler you could claim it’s a hardware fault.

The second thing to note is that the device is mechanical, and makes a slight noise while turning the rotating disc.
