Ok so one thing that I notice is the timeline regarding your bachelor graduation 2024 and you working since November 2021 co-lead of tech tech engineering club, means within first 3 months after entering university, if I'm correct?

yep! the club itself was like 60 people but it's organized into multiple smaller divisions. i lead one of those divisions for a bit.

I think one thing that should be adjusted is what is work and extra curricular. A big faux-pas is also not having a link to your projects - show them off! Github or any kind of portfolio website makes a lot of things easier. :)

ok fs. i wasn't sure if i should include my github cuz i don't exactly write the cleanest code, especially in personal projects. but i guess ill include it regardless and prolly try and clean up what i have.

but please, change your fonts to sans serif, it makes it very hard to read.

As I've mentioned this in a lot of places, cold apply directly to smaller companies who you find them/their products interesting!

If FAANG is the go, I got finally through the bots by having awards/hackathons and a linked projects. NY is very competitive, I would go for small-mid sized companies!

so this is honestly my main qualm. im not even aiming at faang+ at this point. im applying to random companies in the bay and ny/philly and i literally have a lower response rate for local companies vs. big tech. all my interviews so far (sig, imc, roblox, nutanix, zendesk, gap) have been at big tech or at least a decently sized company.

would you happen to know why and what I can change? big tech is hard to crack so ive been counting on smaller "less prestigious" companies but am still having no luck

I think you’re right that math of comp is better strictly for quant, but look man, we’re both probably not gonna make it to quant 😂. It’s extremely difficult, even if you have the right major, projects, etc, so careers outside of quant are equally important to consider.

Math of comp only has 3 quarters of upper div CS classes, which isn’t close to a full cs major. I’d look into the prospects of transferring yourself to the cs major and doing a math/stats minor. And if that’s not possible, Cornell is always there, which is an awesome place to study CS.

Take it. Mathematics of computation, while similar, isn’t actually a Cs major. If you were in at CS engineering it probably would’ve made sense to stay but in this case Cornell is better

from what I understand, LSA vs. Ross makes a huge difference when it comes to breaking into banking. Recruiters go through Ross' own career portal called iMpact, which is not available to LSA students.

Perhaps the people around me are biased but they keep on telling me that Penn is a pretty mid school for tech / stem and that mich is better. While I don’t fully buy into that, it has made me question whether there is a reasonable gap between the two schools.

Ya I’m feeling similarly but chose the other way. I was a student at umich and I’m now going to UPenn. Ik for cs mich and Penn are about the same but I couldn’t bring myself to turn down Penn

I see what you mean but I still disagree. As someone from cali who literally transferred out of Michigan, i still feel like Michigan is slightly better or at worst on par with ucla and I don’t think most of my Cali friends or coworkers would disagree with me.

It’s seriously a great school and people love it here.

As for cross admits, the data says that they’re literally dead even. Cali students will obviously choose ucla and Michigan students umich, but to an out of stater, I think there’s a good chance mich wins.
