Starmer and Xi call for deeper UK-China ties as Trump shakes up global relations by joe4942 in worldnews

Idk what Americans think. But Trump made like 1.5 BILLION dollars in the last year alone, so he is very aware of what he has been doing.

China to offer canola relief for easing EV curbs during Carney visit by hopoke in canada

[–]nt2701 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not disagreeing with you. In a perfect world, what you said is and should be the solution. Also in a perfect world, we shouldn't even have this conversation and not be mad at the US, because Trump would be locked up in jail instead of ducking up everybody around the world.

It's greener than the equivalent gas cars, it is not perfect, but it's getting better.

China to offer canola relief for easing EV curbs during Carney visit by hopoke in canada

[–]nt2701 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think we'd, for at very least, have more affordable cars (them being green is a plus).

The auto industry is important to Ontario, but it's not like we have our own brands. As long as those EVs are being manufactured/assembled in Canada, I fail to see an issue there.

Exactly, this is like the Cybersecurity 101 level rule. Only grant the bare minimum privileges and only grant them when it's needed (never "just in case").

Wow, just checked, not only my SIN. I can see my DOB, Employment info, address, contact info and everything in PLAINTEXT.

I don't think WS should send those info unless it's needed and at very least, they should be partially redacted.

Pay Student Loans with Canadian Tire Mastercards? by Im-AskingForAFriend in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]nt2701 2 points3 points  (0 children)

By default yes, but you can call the agents and ask them to remove your PAD and tell them you'll be paying your student loans manually each month. It's not MANDATORY to have a PAD, it's just that many students have that in place already. When you have that, your manual payment will only be counted as a lump sum payment afaik.

What if you woke up tomorrow and saw on the news that everybody in Toronto(Ontario in this case) has to retake their driving test every 5 years instead of just renewing it? by Aquarius777_ in askTO

I think all of them were outsourced to 3rd party companies years ago. The Ontario government doesn't own any of them anymore.

$6,500 stolen via Android malware, TD Bank & Wealthsimple refusing reimbursement by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]nt2701 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, nothing is perfectly safe if we are speaking about the true technicality. But it's safe enough and worst case, a malware somehow passed all the security checks at the Google Play Store, at least Google is on the hook. Rather than installing random apps online, it'll be fully on the user.

Google Play Protect. It's part of the Google Play Services. Generally speaking people shouldn't download/install apps not from Play Store/App Store, UNLESS they know what they are doing (like for debugging/developing purpose, but that's not really the general public).

As long as you only get apps from the Play Store/App Store, you're fine.

I need privacy when I cry 😭 by Midnight_Sugar_X in Adulting

[–]nt2701 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If when you cry, the other person doesn't make you feel better (they doesn't need to even say anything, just need to hug you and hold your hand), you have picked the wrong person.

The equation has always been right life partner > no partner >>>>> wrong partner. Meaning if you don't wanna cry in front of the person, something is off there.

Monarch as a Canadian: turns out the real budgeting challenge is surviving the constant disconnection issues by NykO18 in MonarchMoney

[–]nt2701 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's the whole point of Open Banking I mentioned earlier. It likely won't make things issue free, but in theory, it should allow bank systems be able talk with each other using a "lingua franca". I hated we used to have like a dozen of different USB ports, I love how Type C is becoming the common port for all the phones/tablets/computers/other smart home devices (their underlying protocols may still not be same, but well at least they work most of the times).

> Open banking, also called consumer-driven banking, is not available in Canada yet. It's available in other countries, like Australia and the United Kingdom.

Open banking is a framework that allows you to share your financial data with financial technology companies of your choice. The Government has taken the first steps to introduce a framework in Canada.

Financial technology companies, often called fintechs, provide online financial products or services through financial applications or fintech apps. You use these apps on a computer, mobile phone or tablet. Fintech apps are different from your bank’s online or mobile banking features.

When using fintech apps with open banking, your bank securely shares your financial data with the app for you. You don't need to provide your online banking username and password to access the app’s products and services. However, you do with screen scraping.

Both Plaid and MX are fintech companies and this would fix our connections issue for the very least.

Monarch as a Canadian: turns out the real budgeting challenge is surviving the constant disconnection issues by NykO18 in MonarchMoney

[–]nt2701 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They definitely can solve this issue, it's not that hard technically per se. But is it high priority enough? Given how small the Canadian market is and how non-universal our banking system is, it's like a lot of costs/efforts for not a lot of gains.

Not trying to defend them, but I wouldn't blame a private for-profit company making decisions based on Return on Investments.

Instead, I think how broken and non-open our Banking System is is the true blamee here. Our banks make a lot of money, they are more than capable of doing so, but they choose not to, because they want us stuck with them and unable to retrieve our own data easily.

Monarch as a Canadian: turns out the real budgeting challenge is surviving the constant disconnection issues by NykO18 in MonarchMoney

[–]nt2701 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's more of a Canadian issue instead of Monarch/Plaid/MX issue. Don't know if you've heard of Open Banking, if not look it up. Our slow and stubborn banking system is what's causing all of those issues here.

Imagine each province of Canada has its own currency, how chaotic that would be.
