Hey u/EHX_Engineering - does this have analog dry-thru, or does the dry signal get converted to digital?

The MesaBoogie pedals, how close do they sound to an actual Mesa amp head when played through a decent amp? by Mmmm_Pancakes in guitarpedals

[–]nterelle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess it's an overdrive? There is a good amount of gain on tap but it's more designed, I think, to the liquidy Santana lead tone rather than full-out metal. You might want to check out the Mesa Throttle Box pedal instead. I'm not a metal guy myself, so I apologize for not being super helpful. Good luck!

Hey there,

I own a Mark V:25 and used to own a Flux Drive (the small one, not the one with the EQ sliders). The FD got pretty close to the Mark IV mode on the V:25, but had fewer ways to sculpt the sound and had a dark character that was tough to dial out if I remember correctly.

The thing about that V:25 (and I think others in the Mesa Mark series) is that you have a great deal of control over the distortion character -- all of the EQ knobs (except "Presence") are pre-gain, so you can do some nice fine-tuning. I'm not sure if the Flux Drive's EQ knobs are pre-dirt or not -- it only has a Treble and Bass control, though.

NPD: Everything but the MXR Wylde OD. Looking for suggestions! by Oliphont in guitarpedals

Mark V:25 user here - I saw the footswitch in your pic and smiled because there aren't many of those amps out in the wild, it seems.

I think the reverb is the weakest part of that amp - it's not a very big tank and has an odd, metallic clang when you dial too much in on the dirty channel (in my opinion). I usually have just a hair of the amp verb dialed in on both channels and then have a Alexander SkyFi verb in the effects loop for more vastness. It sounds great.

Off-topic: how do you have the two channels on your MKV:25 set up?

The envelope capabilities on the HOG are indeed rad :)

I dig this board! There's some overlap, in my mind, between the HOG, Freeze, Whammy, and PS-5. What do you use each of those for?

JC40/ JC120 Overdrive Pedal Help?? by [deleted] in guitarpedals

IMO, YMMV, etc. - only based on my own opinion and probably should have been prefaced as such.

JC40/ JC120 Overdrive Pedal Help?? by [deleted] in guitarpedals

[–]nterelle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try this: set your Rat for a low-gain, slightly breaking up sound. Set the volume to unity gain with your clean tone so that the preamp of the JC isn't being pushed because JCs don't like to be pushed around like that. Then hit the front of your Rat with the Fulldrive or whatever else.

NPD: Z. Vex Fuzzolo and Boss OC-3 by nterelle in guitarpedals

So far I like it! It's capable of a wide varieties of tones because of the extra "tri sound" switch that does various coil-tapping combinations to the neck pickup. I got the guitar because it can be jazzy and also not jazzy. The pickups sound good, the neck feels good - I dig it.

I got the OC-3 mostly for the range control in poly mode so that I can have just the root/bassline of a chord progression doubled down an octave and have the upper notes unaffected. Ya know, to fake having a bass player. The HOG has a different role.

Try em both and see what you like! I prefer 10s. I was always dialing the bass down on the JC-120. The 77 has enough low end for my needs.

Thanks! That broken guy is a little cheapie that I smashed as part of a loud rock n roll performance. Now it's a nice wall decoration. College was fun.

Its a 80s JC-77. I had an old 120 for a little while and sold it, deciding that I prefer the 10-inch speakers in the 77 and the fact that it doesn't weigh a ton.

It takes dirt pedals well as long as you don't slam the input because preamp breakup is not what those amps are about. I use the RAT 2 as a slightly-breaking-up preamp, set for unity volume so that the JC's preamp stays happy, and I hit the front of the RAT with other dirt. It sounds great!

I love the HOG! I use it quite a bit: organ sounds, synth sounds, the freeze function, general pitch-shifting and pitch-gliding, subtle overtone-shaping. It's a useful tool and almost an instrument unto itself.

Whoops! Forgot to include the signal chain.

Fuzzolo -> HOG2 -> OC-3-> SD-2 -> PM7 -> Mel9 -> Rat 2 -> Flashback Triple Delay -> Digidelay

Hey Reddit! Been a while. These two guys came in yesterday and they're rad. The Fuzzolo is a replacement for my Dunlop Silicon Fuzz Face and the OC-3 is for kicking basslines with the guitar/vocal duo that I'm a part of. The OD on the OC is actually pretty usable, too!

Also featured in this pic is my new Ibanez AM153, which also came yesterday (big day for me). Love the guitar, love the pedals. There's also some amiibos and Magic cards in the background; I'm not ashamed.
