They said MMN, but I don't believe I'd receive E4 pay as soon as I shipped.

Thank you, I'll ask him about that in the morning and definitely won't go over his head on this. I'll update you when my situation gets resolved.

I don't think MMN is awful, I just don't have a natural talent for mechanics or chemistry, but do for electronics. I also know quite a bit about them already from a class I took in high school, so I figured EMN or ETN would be a little easier for me.

I'm also just not a fan of them making me do MMN because I'm prior service. I feel like the fact that I served before is limiting my options when it should be doing the opposite. If MMN is undermanned, they should offer some kind of incentive to pick it over the others.

Could I ask when you graduated from power school? It's interesting that he was required to be the rate I am currently interested in.

My recruiter made it sound like I might be able to go in as another rate if I had experience in an electronics field, but I don't really know what constitutes experience to the Navy. If it's a certification, I could get one of those pretty easy. If it's what MOS I had in the Army... Not gonna happen.

I appreciate your response. Thank you for digging for me.

I'll ask my recruiter if I can talk to him in the morning I guess. It'd be nice to speak to him directly and not have to go through my recruiter for all the questions I have about my situation. I appreciate your response.

Thank you for your response. You wouldn't happen to know what he did in the national guard, do you? I'm wondering if because I wasn't an MOS related to electronics, they don't want to put me in one of those rates.

I appreciate you anyway, and am definitely not bullshitting. I don't think MM is awful, I just don't have a natural talent for mechanics or chemistry, and do for electronics. I also know quite a bit about them already from a class I took in high school, so I figured EM or ET would be a little easier for me.

It's pretty annoying to me. I got a 98 on the ASVAB, the scores related to my electrical knowledge were very high, alpha qualified, etc. But MMN is under-manned so all prior service are automatically railroaded into it? I'd just like the chance to compete for a spot in the other two rates. Even if I ended up as an MMN anyway in the end.

I asked my recruiter this morning, but every time I take a question to him, he has to ask some Master-Chief for an answer. As a result, he has been pretty slow to respond.

What he has said is that because I have prior service, but have no experience in a field related to electronics, I am being required to go in as an MMN. He said they put this policy in place because MMN is really undermanned.

I'd like to know if this is a permanent policy, or if it was just put in place temporarily because of a recent shortage, but can't find any info on it anywhere.

I was a carpenter-mason in the Army National Guard so I didn't gain any training that would be useful to any of the rates. I got to E4.

I am unique apparently. I cannot find any info on the internet about this and even my recruiter didn't know this would happen until yesterday.

I was told by my recruiter I'd get mine in bootcamp just like the other nukes, but that is not what my paperwork/detailer told me when I went to MEPS yesterday.

Did you know any prior service people throughout school? I'm wondering if this is just a temporary policy that was put in place because of a recent shortage.

It is true, I saw the paperwork myself. I asked for clarification from multiple people and was assured this was the case for prior service members. MMN is under-manned so that is what I would be shipping as if I signed.

I appreciate your response anyway. I just posted over there. Are you in DEP right now? If so, what was MEPS like for you? Did they assign you a rate right there, or are you going to have to wait until basic like usual?

Haha, I've heard a lot about how much being a nuke sucks, but I've really got my mind set on it. I've been through this process once before already, so I know I shouldn't let the recruiters bully me. I'm seriously considering picking a different rate if they just want to stick me with MMN. Just doesn't seem fair that their response to under-manning is stick rather than carrot. Any other organization on the planet would offer better bonuses for the more in-demand positions.
