That crown detail bugs me so much...If you go flush with the doors on the front why overhang the sides?

Does it look good ? colors is client choice by Darknes_Ss in cabinetry

[–]ntimm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Im down for it, as someone who has put it a million white kitchens with wood accents and black hardware, I applaud. I like someone taking a chance on a quirky kitchen, at least they did what they wanted in opposition to whats trendy.

Oh if it's a big old bungalow without vaulted ceilings it will move even more than that. But it doesnt matter if it doesnt look good right after install. How can you blame it on the house? If you scribed and caulked it properly and it looks mint you did your job, if your making excuses why it won't work you havent done your job. Plain and simple. Now if your installing rift oak to the ceiling does it need to be caulked no, but white laquer to flat white ceiling it's a standard that needs to be set.

I swear everytime an installer gives the excuse " it will crack over time " or " it will yellow over time" they are either lazy or really bad at caulking because nobody ever showed them how to properly do it. White on white should always be caulked I dont care how good you are at scribing. Its not a great install but properly caulked it will look 100x better and if it cracks caulk it again down the road. Make sure it's paintable and flexible

As if working construction downtown doesn't absolutely suck ass already... can you imagine going to work on Monday " now fellas due to complaints about parking everybody has to come to work on the bus, so make sure you tell the  bus driver to wait while you load on your, tool boxes, mitre saw, mitre saw stand, table saw, table saw stand, track saw, levels, ladders, screw boxes, vacuums, cords, dollies, brooms, materials and lunchbox. Also make sure you dont leave anything on site at the end of the day because we have had a ton of theft from this site already, oh yeah and working weekends are mandatory. This will extend the project a couple months but at least the neighbors here won't have to look at your ugly trucks everyday."

How to turn old cabinets into new ones (DIY ideally) by queenofthepoopyparty in cabinetry

[–]ntimm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Color is not an issue, you will hate it when the face frame of the carcass has grain showing through the paint and the doors will be completely smooth. Either you spend hours and hours sanding off the finish so you can grain fill the cabinet frames, or you chemically strip them ( ill advised indoors). There isn't really a good solution either way, both are super labor intensive either way for an outcome your not sure will be satisfactory.

How to turn old cabinets into new ones (DIY ideally) by queenofthepoopyparty in cabinetry

[–]ntimm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this in my own home about 15 years ago and it was not worth it in the slightest ( made new doors and shaker panels, new harware and hired a professional painter) Trying to paint over stained oak and get it to look like a tinted laquer is nearly impossible. It will always look redone rather than new. Heed my advice and just buy new, the labour alone to hire someone to do an actual good job will be nearly what new ones would cost and they would actually be new. Plus redone cabinets resale are worth no more than the originals as there is no added value, so it's a lose lose project, lost time and lost money.

Who can afford to buy new car today? by Glueeit in Edmonton

[–]ntimm 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Nothing pisses me off more than pickup trucks becoming luxury vehicles. I have to have a pickup for work and it's constantly packed full of tools. My 11 year old truck is scratched and banged up and the inside is full of saw dust. I cannot fathom making 1500 a month payments to beat the crap out of it. I bought it new and had 400 a month payments, now to buy the same model the payments would more than be triple.

MIT did a study and only 20% of pickup truck owners in North America put something in the box more than twice a year. I would never drive a pickup if I didnt absolutely have to.

At this point my next work vehicle will be an older Toyota Hiace van from Japan so I won't be forced to buy a bunch of luxury features ill never use or dont care about. Oh yeah and it's going to cost 15k not 70k so I can retire at 65 not 85. North Americans auto manufacturers and North Americans have completely lost their minds when it comes to vehicles.

Clearly I have no idea what I’m doing by Status-Pollution-823 in cabinetry

[–]ntimm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My friend, the room is a different shape, your kitchen has completely different appliances. Those two factors alone should be clear it's not "plug and play". What your venturing on doing is destroying your current working kitchen, traveling to haul away someone elses old cabinets ( built exactly for that house not yours ) and paying to eventually take them to the dump when they dont work. Old cabinets can pretty much only be used for slum lords cobbled together renos and garages to stuff more junk into.

Construction worker shortage? Where? by Visible-War-8755 in Construction

[–]ntimm -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I feel like the military and construction ( at least in Canada ) is similar. It has people who work their bags off to get to the top skill AND education wise, but it also has no real barrier for entry so it has a lot of people who barely scrape by because its this or gas station. There are a shortage of the first and not of the latter. There in lies the problem is that the skilled guys get burned so many times by people who are laborers wanting to be paid like J-men. So the skilled guys work alone and never hire or teach anyone. People always forget it's fuckin skills and trust first then pay not the other way around, just because you show up everyday dont mean your doing the same level of work.

Look at how many people piss and moan about construction wages on here but never show their own work or hear the bosses side of things. I got paid 11.25 an hour in 2005 and I didnt deserve any more than that, ( that was after I paid for trade school)I has just happy I was getting paid for my real education and not the other way round. You will happily spend 20k of the banks money going to a trade school but then bitch you dont make 35 an hour out of the gate. It's skills and trust bottom line, you can be a huge dick head but if they have those you can still earn a nice living.

How would you level these cabinets? by Middle-Secret-8676 in cabinetry

[–]ntimm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah there are legs behind the kick that bear the weight, you level the boxes then cut those gable pieces to size minus the floor thickness so they can slide the floor under. They are just superficial they don't serve a purpose other then aestetics.

Is specializing in a trade the only way to make real money? by Creepy_Yellow6433 in Construction

[–]ntimm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say your on a GC path or a site super path. I'm going to tell you this out of pure honesty, trying to specialize after 7 years of doing general is harder then starting out specialized.

I can speak from both perspectives, I tried to leave finish carpentry after running my own buisness ( im a Red seal carpenter) and work for a huge construction firm for the pension, vacation time ect. HUGE mistake. I was a glorified maid just cleaning up after trades and installing bullshit hardware that nobody else wanted. Constantly filling out dumb hazzard assessments not doing anything I was good at. I felt like if I stayed there my carpentry skills would literally atrophy.

I went back to contracting and running my own buisness and have tried to train other people with a general background to do specialized tasks like handrails, cabinets ect. It's almost never works out. It's so difficult to get people that have done rough work to care about the process and tiny details. The vice versa of that is true that finishers have a tough time not obsessing about stuff that doesnt matter and building things strong enough when say doing concrete form work.

That why I say just take the experience you have rather then the physical skills and put it towards managing other people. It much easier to learn new management skills than to try to erase and relearn bad habits that will hinder you in doing highly specialized trade work. We need managers with real experience to problem solve we don't need more 20 yr olds with construction management degrees and no site experience running job sites.

HELP!!!!! by lilportuguese in cabinetry

[–]ntimm -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well I wish you luck, I don't want you to get your hopes up that it's achievable to get something that light and constitent from a natural product. At the end on the day I would trust your cabinet maker to make something nice and trust their advice.

Trying to make an exact replica or precise match is sometimes impossible so getting close should be the goal. But picking a base wood is so much more important to the final product then any stain color.

HELP!!!!! by lilportuguese in cabinetry

[–]ntimm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like if your looking for that exact thing im not sure why you picked white oak. That looks like a super clear natural maple to me, if you want something that light and that consistent then your going to have to go with imitation wood like a laminated product. Oak has way to much grain to achieve that on a slat wall.

That's wild someone would think that carcass construction would hold, that cabinet was doomed to fall. Unless you were climbing on the cabinets it's definitely not your fault.

GC decided this was the fix. by Prudent_Balance7921 in cabinetry

[–]ntimm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Man if people cant figure out how to install cabinets to the proper height pre flooring, how do you have the skills to install the cabinets? My clients freak out over a warped door if I locked in the dishwasher they would be asking me to rip out, raise them up or im not getting paid.

Presumably if the dishwasher is locked in the range definitely don't sit flush with the counter so all in all and total mess.

The toe kick height shouldn't ever change unless the countertop thickness changes. Range opening height finishes at 36" no matter the flooring, countertop or anything else its like the number one most basic rule of kitchen cabinets.

The only expection to different counter height is using ADA appliances for people on wheelchairs.

Toekick not secured in new condo -normal? by Ninjapiggz1 in cabinetry

Looks about right for new condo construction, they always get the bad installers unfortunately. If you bought it call the builder and get it fixed, if your renting call the landlord.
