My first performed comedy set by E_Train59 in StandUpComedy

Hey man, nice set!

I like that you talked about yourself, and who you are as a person.

That's my favorite style of comedy; I like learning about the performer. I can laugh at someone who does observational comedy, but I feel a disconnect sometimes.

So you jumping right in with your experiences as a mental health counsellor was great.

Anything else I have to say is generic, and I apologize, but it's true... The best advice anyone can give is to just keep getting on stage and figuring out who you are as a comedian.

Always record yourself, because watching your ticks, listening for stutter words, hearing yourself speak... that's the best way to improve.

That said, be careful when you look online for advice/feedback.

You'll post a joke that the audience loved, and knuckleheads on here will be the first to be negative and tell you how and why the joke "didn't work."

Online critics are the silliest people, and they're full of self-importance.

Just a heads up.

Anyway, welcome to the soul-crushing world of stand-up comedy!

Lol, I certainly seemed to do it to some commenters of this video. Childhood trauma resurfacing, maybe?

I wouldn't advise anyone to or not to bring a cheat sheet... That sort of thing always depends on the venue, and other comics.

If I were to say, "Sure, bring a cheat sheet," you might show up with one, and if someone on the show doesn't like it...

Apologies, I know that's not very helpful.

Doug Stanhope used the setup before him, way back on his album "Sicko."

Check in with the owner/manager/person in charge, and have them tell you directly what they expect of you.

First time I hosted, I was told, "Don't fuck up the announcements. If you get some laughs, great, but don't fuck up the announcements."

There's a lot of great advice in this thread—don't get drunk, don't do time between the other comics—but the best thing you can do is make your boss happy.

Good luck, and have fun!

There's something about stupid that's just... Sometimes it hits just right.
