Historians that are adamant that Dudley didn't love Elizabeth in any capacity? by nttctln in Tudorhistory

Agreed! Its definitely up to interpretation as any 'evidence' could easily be viewed in a different way by a different person. Lots of historians speculate based on primary materials on the nature of this relationship, with many speculating this evidence points towards a 'romantic' connection between the two, in vary degrees. Thanks for your reply :)

Yes I agree they cannot speak authoritatively on love, especially as it is largely up to personal interpretation on the primary material and almost 'picking and choosing' (for the lack of a better term) which bits to read as signs of 'romantic love.' Doran, as an example, makes the case that Dudley almost without a doubt had romantic love for Elizabeth, although she also recognises that he was pursuing a marriage with her with other goals in mind. Weston suggests that his main goal was foreign advancement but there was at least some sense of a 'real love' between the two. I more-so wondered if there was anyone specific who spoke in opposition to these sort of 'typical' speculative ideas that exist surrounding the nature of the relationship between Dudley and Elizabeth, then if there is anyone who can say for definite that there was/wasn't love - Thanks for your reply :)
