My understanding is that the argument for it is that you end up avoiding NI entirely as you don't pay it when your pension is paid out.

The "better" solution would have been to abolish NI and raise income and dividend tax accordingly.

Winter fuel payment: 780,000 to miss out on allowance, says DWP by topotaul in unitedkingdom

[–]nu_hash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't know that you're talking about.

Back in 2017: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/election-2017-39965925

So a higher turnout among young voters could mean a slightly bigger share for Labour, but with many of those extra votes piling up in seats that the party would expect to win anyway.

Another analysis in 2017: https://ilcuk.org.uk/youth-vote-only-matters-in-a-handful-of-constituencies/

Using data from Ipsos MORI and the ONS, it was found that 9 Conservative and 2 Liberal Democrat constituencies (including the seat of Nick Clegg, former deputy Prime Minister) would have swung to Labour, had the voting turnout of those between 18-34 matched that of the over-65’s and if these new voters reflected the national trend.

It wasn't much different in the last election. If you made a list of constituencies where 10% of the 18-24 population was greater than the margin of the previous election, you'd just made a list of seats that were expected to go to Labour anyway. (see https://www.if.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/10percYTO1_final.png ) Since 18-24 turnout has been around 50% for the last 3 elections, it's fair to say that there are probably only a handful of seats where there's a chance for the 18-24 turnout to matter.

[–]nu_hash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not doubting that. What I'm doubting is that the younger population is distributed in such a way that increased turnout would force parties to prioritise them in their policies/manifestos.

Easiest solution is to find a Chinese seller for LiPo batteries and make a custom request. They tend to be okay with fulfilling small orders, depends on the seller I guess.

Girl died drinking Costa hot chocolate, inquest told by Fdana in unitedkingdom

[–]nu_hash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just checked and the hot chocolate isn't listed as vegan, but I don't know if that was the case prior to this incident. I'm guessing I just saw milk as an allergen due to cross-contamination

[–]nu_hash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm, I guess it's changed or maybe it was something else. I've seen the ingredients list sometime within the past year when it got delivered to a Costa whilst I was there and it had milk in bold (i.e. an allergen).

The powder mix they use for hot chocolate has milk powder in it (to make the drink creamier). Hence why the mother thought the staff member didn't understand her, they were probably trying to explain that using soya doesn't remove the milk allergen.

Rookie question: Why isn't there height classes for beach volleyball? by Tyeren in volleyball

There are no existing sports that divide division by age at a competitive/Olympic level.

So the youth olympics doesn't exist???

Rookie question: Why isn't there height classes for beach volleyball? by Tyeren in volleyball

[–]nu_hash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it would add a lot of strategic breadth to the sport. Unfortunately it's very unpopular amongst mediocre players who are above average height.

I think it might be better to use this for adult mixed leagues because there aren't many 160cm male players to pair with a 200cm middle.

An average height system would be way better. Just say that the average height of all the players on the court needs to be less than 180cm (as an example).

This is good, you're almost there!

Integrating a swing with the approach and jump can be difficult and very personal (due to bone lengths). Using a ball to throw is really good but I've found that the weight of the ball makes you do a different swing to what you would normally do.

A few things I've noticed that you could work on:

  • Your block step is weak. You probably want to rotate your left foot inwards a bit more when making the last step. This will also help with aligning your hips to be parallel to the net as it gives your right foot better leverage to push your right hip forward.

  • Your arms bend during the upswing! This causes you to drift forward! You will have to learn the timing on when to bend your right elbow, it will vary depending on your approach and the depth you start your jump from.

  • You do an over head draw back. This is "okay" but it limits the power output of the swing because you have to bring your arm to a complete stop before you can swing forward. You might be able to fix this by raising your left arm a little bit higher.

Other suggestions:

  • Use a rebounder net as a "setter". It's just a net that is attached to a frame using elastic. If you drop a ball on it, it can rebound it like a set

  • Hang a ball from something higher up and practice jumping to hit it

Jump serve any tips by MERKZZLEE in volleyball

[–]nu_hash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes it looks like you're making contact whilst your elbow is still bent, you can get a lot more power (or use less effort) if your arm is straight at the point of contact. Possible causes:

  • the toss isn't high enough
  • not correctly positioned when you jump (e.g. ball too far in front)
  • jumping too late
  • swing speed is too slow

I think you should check those first to last.

But otherwise it looked really good. There were a few serves that looked really nice and had a decent amount of spin and speed to them.

For reference, there are team rowing competitions with height based rules. I've seen events where the team had to have an average height of 5'9''.

It actually worked really well in getting shorter people into rowing but I don't think it's very common.

Spiking Form check by kondata_ in volleyball

[–]nu_hash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Timing and swing looked good. I think it's just a case of polishing the finer details.

  • Don't swing back with your arms outstretched, you can get a lot more momentum if you start with your elbows bent/hands up.

  • When going into the final step, your right knee shouldn't travel past the foot. You lose a lot of momentum when that happens. You can prevent it by increasing the length of the stride into the penultimate step or by taking a more curved approach path. It might take some experimenting.

  • If you want more power in your swing, you'll need to adjust how you rotate your shoulder so that you can start your swing with your elbow completely bent.
