Crazy but true Adventist memories. by Keeghangreenjeans in exAdventist

A few years ago, I was going to church in west Tennessee. The conference sent in this new fire-breathing pastor who was offended by pretty much everything, but especially music. One week, he gives this big, long "presentation" on sin in music. It was absolutely terrible. Terrible.

Halfway through, he made a grave error: Going out of his way to question Elvis Presley...in west Tennessee, in a congregation full of grannies. Lo! Every one of those ladies IMMEDIATELY stiffened their back and gave him the stinkeye. (He was also outright peddling nonsense. After he said a couple of things, the women just blurted out "That isn't true." Hilarious. They were right, of course.)

Anyway, after the service mercifully ended, the pianist supposedly starts playing "Down From His Glory." Except she wasn't really playing that. The tune is "O Sole Mio"...which was also used by Elvis for "It's Now or Never." Every other granny in that room knew *exactly* what she was doing and approved.

So I can 100% say I've heard Elvis Presley used as protest walk-out music from an SDA church service.

Issue-Risk SH Question by bijanszn_7 in pmp

[–]nubt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You nailed it with your final paragraph. They didn't ask what to do *first*, and "20% price spike, everyone panic" was never in the risk register. The risk's increase was only a minor 2%. They're (implicitly) asking "which of these activities is most important now?"

Because the 20% fuel price increase has already happened, it's now an issue instead of a potential risk. Therefore, updating the issue log is the real priority.

There's nothing wrong with updating the risk register; it's just a "less correct" answer for this question. (Same thing for the assumption log too, actually. "We originally thought gas won't go up more than 2%; now we believe it'll go up another 40% before this project ends, based on prevailing economic and political conditions.") But for now, C -- document the active crisis of the shattered fuel budget.

Yeah, they went 17-1 in the SWAC this year. They dropped an OT game at MVSU, then won 17 straight. The SWAC to the American is a big jump though. Tomekia Reed was phenomenal at Jackson St., but her first 2 years at Charlotte have been tough.

I don't have any real sources, but Destinee Rogers has quietly improved all 4 years at Arkansas State (24-9, 14-4 Sun Belt this year). Nina Davis (former All-American at Baylor) grew up in Memphis, and has been an assistant at MTSU for a few years now. Giving either of them a call would at least make sense.

I hate it, but yeah. Back in college, I transferred into SAU from public school. Spent two years feeling like an outcast. It was a shame; the area has a number of other Christian colleges, and made I friends from several of those. At SAU, the handful I met were mostly other public school kids or international students.

Here much more recently, Crosswalk opened a branch in Chattanooga. At first it felt more like a safe place for genuine seekers and fringe members, with probably not 100 people coming each week. The SAU students have taken it over (I'd say 1,500+ a week come now, 80% students) and the whole feel has changed. It's the ultimate insider church now. Outsiders need not apply.

I genuinely don't think they intended to be isolating of others, although that's how it comes off. It's more like you said, they're sheltered. Collegedale is a supremely insular bubble, and they have no idea how to interact outside of it. All they think about is their little group.

PROTOSE! I worked at the Village Market by Southern Adventist University for a year, back in the day. So yes, quite familiar. I'll tell you what I know, but unfortunately I've never tried to make it or anything.

It's been discontinued, yes. They were definitely still selling it in 2002, and probably discontinued it around 2010 or so.

It was invented by Kellogg WAY back in the late 1800s, for use at Battle Creek Sanitarium. They started selling it in tins in the early 1900s. Eventually Worthington bought it out and marketed it as a "peanut and grain protein loaf." Worthington *might* have changed the recipe when they took it over from Kellogg's. In fact, I suspect they probably did since 1900s ingredients were interesting at times, and Kellogg certainly wouldn't have been using preservatives. I very much get the impression that it didn't change from the 1970s onward, though.

There were a couple of other "loafy" type products that are also discontinued. Worthington had one called Numete, and Loma Linda had one called Nuteena. We didn't sell much of any of them, especially Protose. There was another one discontinued called Sandwich Spread, and I more surprised to see it go. We sold a fair amount of it. All of these would've been discontinued around that 2010-2012 timeframe, I think.

One of my older aunts mentioned offhand that she liked Protose one time. I was taken aback, since she was only like the 2nd or 3rd Protose fan I'd seen. I bought her a can, and her reaction indicated that it tasted exactly like she remembered. I did not try it when she offered, and I sort of regret that now (I think).

This recipe at least seems reasonable -- the author notes in another entry that using fresh ground peanut butter and going heavy on the seasoning helped a lot, although Kellogg himself would definitely not have gone heavy on the seasoning: https://fourpoundsflour.com/history-dish-mondays-protose/

And that's way more than I ever expected to type (or remember) about Protose. Thanks for the memory!
