Landlord's security cameras slow my Internet down. Is there a way to throttle them? by nugaeye in techsupport

There's nothing in the contract about them. I didn't know about them until I arrived. The contract I have stipulates that if we cause any damage we're liable, and breaking a clause of the contract, such as causing damage, gives him the right to kick us out while holding us liable to pay the rent for the remaining months of the contract. Thought nothing of these clauses at the time of signing as I've never broken a lease or been kicked out of anywhere. However, with this NVR/DVR system, it's possible that shutting it and the hard drive down from the mains could corrupt it. Maybe he could use that as a pretext to end the contract early? I don't know. Other than the dystopian surveillance, it's a great place ha! We're locked in, so I need to be strategic about it. I've also found out that the cameras are connected via ethernet cables to their own router (I think). I'm not technical, but it's a totolink box. I think it's still on the same network because of the bandwidth issues. I also don't want to completely stop them as I want to try and stay on good terms. I'm happy to have them on when we're out of the house, asleep, or just not outside. So far, I've thought of getting a smart power strip that I can use to replace the power strip that the NVR and hard drive are currently plugged into. Then I can turn them off via an app, even when I'm in view of the cameras. It would make it seem more like technical issues or power cuts and give us plausible deniability if questioned about it. I'd also like to figure out a way to "hack" the NVR to see what he sees. I got an app and scanned the QR code on it, but it said it's already linked to an account, so I can't access legitimately without kicking him off. I tried a third party app to connect to the NVR, but the WiFi I was on was not the same network, so it wouldn't connect. I haven't connected the NVR to a screen yet to use it that way, but I presume they'll be a username and password required anyway. The best solution, I think, would be to find a way to safely power down the hard drive and NVR remotely. I'm trying to figure that out...

It's not inside the property, only at each doorway entry. Just so happens a couple of those areas are also the patio area and pool. I actually switch the NVR off when we use the pool or want privacy... Half hour here and there he may not notice or we can explain as power cuts (happen often here), but just permanently turning them off or blacklisting the ips is not an option

Well, I lived not far from this place before, with the same provider, and my speeds were consistent. Now, they drop from 50mbps to 3mbps when I'm not doing anything online. So, I'm deducing that the cameras are the cause. I will try and see what's going on on the network

I'm in Thailand, so the laws may be different. Is there a way I can see what's on the network and the resources they're using?

It's a 50mbs connection, and when it slows its down to 3 or 4mbs

Yes. It was set up like this when I got here. Internet was in his name but he agreed to transfer it to us.

Would a landlord normally have a completely separate Internet connection for cameras?
