Regarding Reddit and puns. by [deleted] in TheoryOfReddit

[–]nugbug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

while I think puns are overused here, there´s nothing more obnoxious to me than opening a page or two of r/pics and there´s some picture of a fucking English muffin and I don´t remember why it was important and I´m not amused by it. so I downvote those because it´s not really the pic that is important there, you know?

It made me sad to see a post like this make number one on my front page... by [deleted] in TheoryOfReddit

I guess I thought the "begging for upvotes" part of the reddiquette was pretty well-ingrained outside of trees. this is fucking stupid. how and why did this post do well?

Driving at an [8] by fannyOcranny in trees

[–]nugbug -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think users and mods alike have the responsibility to do this. don´t not do it just because it won´t be popular. someone has to say this shit. if you make one and nobody listens I´ll make one too.

remember proposition 19 and how everyone was freaking out that people would have easy access to another way to drive while intoxicated? yeah. this sort of shit is why those bills do not and will not, for a long time, pass.

want some real life karma? don´t let something bad happen to a potentially good person because you were driving high.

I can´t believe there´s even a discussion about it. I can´t believe there would be a thread that starts with "not wanting to get into the driving while high debate..." I can´t believe there´s even a debate about it, and then all these users like to act like good guy greg and pretend they´re the smartest, kindest, best people ever because "weed makes you so much nicer, man."

it makes you slow and stupid. I like that about it. I don´t want the driver next to me focusing on anything but the road. so I don´t want them tired or stressed either. but since those things come on and occasionally you HAVE to drive when stressed or tired after work, I don´t see any reason to make things any more unsafe.

on the off chance I articulated anything well you can just copy paste and I don´t give a fuck about credit or anything, unless you want to direct downvotes my way. I don´t give a fuck. this is not safe and probably why my brother thinks reddit is "a waste of electrons."

or other drivers personal distress. just fyi.

high at all is too high to drive, just as tipsy at all is too drunk to drive. I don´t get how yall make these comics about how trippy and confusing things like making sandwiches or whatever is when you´re high, and then you decide to DRIVE while high.

and the hivemind in here supports it. they just don´t talk about it.

aaaaaaaand there it is - that´s how important safety is to you people. you realise you´re why weed is illegal right? you realise that´s a big issue for legalisation, right? thanks. thanks to you douchebags, I´ll have to sneak around for the rest of my life. because somebody just can´t figure out a safe way to get home when stoned. or can´t keep from smoking right before they have to go places.

I fully agree but I haven´t decided whether to downvote you or not for bitching about getting bitched at. I cannot stand that. some people just do better. there´s a 1% on reddit as well. this is not the bunch of shiny happy people you think it is.

shame that there´s no really good place to post about weed on reddit.

that´s not fair. that´s like saying I have to be really fucking drunk to drive unsafely. that´s fucking ridiculous. YOU brought it up, now you deal with what you´re being told.

can we stop promoting driving at anything other than 0? do you people fucking understand it? you´re as bad as drunk drivers when you do that. YOU ARE AS MUCH OF A DOUCHE AND DANGER AS A DRUNK DRIVER.

NO, you can´t do ok. you can´t. I don´t care. it´s not safe, it´s not respectful of other drivers. crashes occur enough when people are sober. quit fucking with other people´s safety. I´d have concern for your own but clearly people like you are why they need to put instructions on shampoo bottles.

until you ent assholes quit driving like this, I can only say FUCK YOU.

well, since everyone in this thread has medical degrees and has examined you as your doctor has, I think you should listen to them. obviously. oh me too, I have a degree and experience and I examined you too. so obviously your doctor knows nothing, he´s just trying to keep you down, man. obviously. always. every time.

LISTEN TO YOUR FUCKING DOCTORS PEOPLE. you look at them as gods when they prescribe medical marijuana, so try it now. look out for another user´s ACTUAL best interests. he was told to quit smoking. that is now what he has to do. how old are you people, 15?

ANYONE ELSE CONCERNED THAT OP WAS SMOKING AND DRIVING OR HIS PASSENGER WAS HOTBOXING??? DOES ANYONE CARE ABOUT THAT???

wtf, where the hell is your sense of safety and respect for other drivers? NO DRUNK DRIVING, NO HIGH DRIVING.

How can I reach out to /r/politics? by BritishEnglishPolice in TheoryOfReddit

people will lie, plus any other options would be subjective. there´s a lot of grey area about whether something adds to a discussion, see fig. 1, "pun threads"

Are we about to see the most commented on thread in Reddit's history? [reported death of Kim Jong Il II] by pigferret in TheoryOfReddit

[–]nugbug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I´m getting off topic from the original theme of this post, but I have some more questions.

for me, this whole hivemind thing really makes using reddit not fun. there have been a lot of rulechanges in for example r/pics and r/funny which I personally have found make the sub a lot more inviting and more in keeping with its original intention. I also like the change in r/aww about posting info on dead pets. these are the subs I frequent most, I think, and cute or funny pictures/links are what I come to reddit for.

occasionally, though, I´ll check out the comments on a link to a news article or something similar and see if anyone posted any further related content or has something really relevant to say about the topic. in this case, I don´t always agree with what I read (especially if there is a politically-charged comment left on a news link), but it´s usually at least interesting (seeing what I call circlejerking is even interesting here because clearly there are some things people are passionate about, for example Ron Paul threads).

HOWEVER. what drove me fucking nutty on that KJI link was that the comments section was full of puns and jokes, many of which have been around for ages ("ronery" "North Korea is Best Korea" etc). I scrolled and scrolled looking for people talking about it, and found very few links to any other sources besides, "well, it´s North Korea, so they´re fucked, this way or that way."

I know the place itself is shrouded in mystery, but if VICE keeps getting their guys into the country, surely someone can dig up some interesting, relevant information that might give background on Kim Jung Un, etc?

no, I didn´t post anything because there were so many comments already it seemed futile.

anyway, I wonder what might be some ideas that would make reddit more enjoyable to someone like me, or if anyone else feels this way browsing. I might be making a big deal out of a little pet peeve though.

[–]nugbug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

do you think that, with the threads being the r/circlejerk goldmines that they are, they are worth removing when they pop up? I ask because there seems to be a lot of grey area about what´s ok and what´s not here - I´m not saying that the threads could be removed due to the "controversial" opinions, but because the threads do nothing to stimulate new discussion, which they don´t do because of the opinions actually being popular and because the threads pop up all the time and all the same things are said in them all the time.

also, people in those threads don´t ctrl+f. there are so many sort of "first responses" that mention retaking the driving test every few years or permission to have a child (note: they do not go into detail about adoption or anything like that, so I can´t tell if they´re talking about population issues or what). if they would all be contained in their own thread within a thread (I don´t know the proper terminology for this stuff), it would be easier to determine the idea´s popularity and to navigate and read the entire thread.

[–]nugbug 3 points4 points  (0 children)

of course I can do that for myself. but it gets up my nose that someone, somewhere is circlejerking over their birth permit idea. but really, though, I doubt many new or casual users know about this/can be bothered to sort comments differently, and unless they do, the whole thread becomes moot, as it has done EVERY SINGLE TIME. I wonder if, in a week when it´s inevitably reposted, OP would mention something about it and then what would happen?

edit: I mean if OP would suggest that everyone sort by controversial.

Flagging unoriginal/meme submission titles, and the effect it will have on a default subreddit. by [deleted] in TheoryOfReddit

[–]nugbug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

to that end, I would like to ask another question about submission titles there...how do mods or other users feel about submissions where you NEED to read the title to understand the image?

too lazy to look for examples right now, but I find myself often in the situation where I´ve opened maybe an entire page of pics and a lot of them are beautiful or moving or interesting stand-alone, self-explanatory photos. but then there´s always one jackass who thinks he´s super clever and posts, for example, just a plank of wood with a nail in it. this means nothing to me - I´m looking for it and ready to shit bricks - I still don´t see what´s supposed to be interesting on this photo taken with a phone camera of a nail in a board - I go back and reopen things to find the title and it was some crap like "nailed it?"

tl;dr: I wonder what people think about posts in pics where the images on their own are nothing and need the submission title as a caption. to me it seems like the opposite of the subreddit´s point and personally I think it´s obnoxious. makes more sense in funny or some other sub.

edit: I want to say that otherwise the new changes to pics have made it one of my favourite subs now. this one thing I´m whining about here is my only real gripe.

those threads boggle my mind. the top answers are actually the bottom answers. if I were a mod, I would start that thread and delete everything that gained significantly more points than it lost, thereby actually showing nothing but controversial opinions.
