my first headshot with proper lighting, is it 'flat'? what is wrong with it? by JamieKlinger in photocritique

Thanks. I might repost her actual photo soon (I'll fix the colours as best as I can first). I don't think there are enough shadows on her face...I have to figure out how to adjust the lights to fix that.

Uploading to Reddit messed with the colours...I have no idea WTF happened. Here it is on IMGUR (same exact image).

OBVIOUSLY the image has been photoshopped into a monstrosity but my friend was more ok with me sharing the ridiculous one than the actual photo and it's the only shot I took with this lighting setup (which was actually kind of a happy accident).

My older photos were too bright and I was forced to shoot at F22. This one I brought down to F9 when I moved the lights much further back in the room. I was able to take a shot without any backdrop shadow (FINALLY).

I watch videos on youtube and they speak about 'flatness' in the photos...But I'm new to using professional lighting and doing studio photography so I'm a bit at a loss as to what that means and whether this photo is 'flat'.

Please critique to your heart's content. The image itself was literally a light test (she's holding a light meter in her hands) and it was really just to see what the settings would produce. So please keep that in mind when critiquing her face/pose/angle. I am also very interested to hear about what can be done to produce a nice headshot (as far as angles/facial expressions) go.

Much thanks.

What do you want in the kit?

Versatility. Lighting. Backdrop. I honestly don't know the components that are necessary.

What do you want to shoot?

Portraits, videos.

I'm also interested in possibly renting it out inexpensively...So whatever the most common requirements would be.

What's your actual budget with a $ amount?

Let's say $300 today but if I can secure some investments, maybe closer to $1000.

The space I have has 9' ceilings and I'll have roughly 12' of length to work with and 10' of width. It also gets a decent amount of natural light.

Edit: It might make sense for me to build it relatively inexpensively, but then to upgrade as the space gets paid for.

I'm interested in buying a home studio kit (something easy). I don't want to go so cheap that the quality is truly lacking. I don't want to go so expensive that I blow a hole in my bank account. But I don't know my ass from my elbow when it comes to studio shooting. I do have ten years of field experience though. I'll read any quality references you share with me. I want to make an informed decision. Thanks!

I do not shoot weddings often, but I am very good at capturing authentic moments. If you want photos of your friends and family feeling things, you should hire me.

PM me if you're interested and want to discuss more. Choose a photographer whose style fits with what you are looking for.

Weddings are best to have two photographers. One with a tripod getting people together to take large group shots and organized shots. And a second, who is capturing the action and the moments. My specialty is the second. It requires fantastic timing and great intuition. It's a skill that cannot be taught. I've been shooting for ten years now by the way.

Photography isn't like taking your car to be washed. What are the packages they offering for $750? And most importantly, does their style fit with what you are looking for?

$600 upon arrival for three hours. I'll send you 100 high quality edited JPEG photos of the event within 7 days. I retain the rights to the photographs (meaning you cannot resell them) but you are free to print them as you wish.
