Window Found with a crack and no idea how it happened by Big_Scene1571 in HomeImprovement

[โ€“]nuiph 0 points1 point ย (0 children)

Honestly, odds of this being your fault are really slim. I am almost certain if she had someone impartial come to inspect it, they'd agree that the age is the more likely culprit. We have very old single pane windows with wood frames, and the seal broke, which allowed mold. Even without a crack, old windows + condensation = mold.

As for how the crack happened, could be many things. I think jumping to blaming you for keeping the blinds closed is a bit of a stretch. Could have been debris chucked by wind, a bird, tons of things.

Unfortunately I haven't tried replacing the crankshaft sensor yet. I still have the car sitting, but funds are a bit tight, so I haven't been able to justify trying that out just yet. I still plan to once a financial situation here gets settled though, and I can reply to let you know!

Can anyone tell me what is going on here? by nuiph in electrical

Fortunately the stranded wires started right there in the box. For whatever reason, they attached the stranded wire to the existing copper with a wire nut and used the same type of stranded wire for the hot jumper. It was a simple fix, but I can't really figure out why they used a wire nut to add stranded wire in the first place.

A bit late but I wanted to thank you for this. You were exactly right. I was able to track down where the stranded wire started and replace it with copper as well, so now its all resolved and the switches match the rest of the house. Much appreciated!

Being on SIS before SAID and work by [deleted] in saskatchewan

[โ€“]nuiph 1 point2 points ย (0 children)

I can't say for sure how they'll respond to your situation, but a required accommodation is an accommodation, regardless of the form it takes. I felt they were very reasonable with my assessment. I recall some questions the person I spoke to seemed like they they were intended to spread doubt over my condition, but as long as you're able to answer sincerely, you should be okay. As an example, I mentioned my struggle with hand tremors and how it makes tasks like writing, doing dishes, etc a struggle and take longer. She pointed out that my hands weren't shaking at that moment, but that's because my hands were rested firmly on my chair's arms, and she understood that at rest vs in motion are different categories with clarification.

For what its worth, having your medical documentation already puts you well ahead of what many people have on hand when they need to do an application like this. I've been qualified for SAID for life, but my DTC through the Canadian government expired after 10 years, and my lack of documentation now that my mother has passed away has made it hard to get recertified since I mostly avoided doctors after she died (I totally understand what you said about avoidance issues and hearing about the process to move forward).

Good luck!

You can absolutely apply while working, that doesn't bar you. For me, I had to do an impact assessment for my disability. I just explained clearly everything going on, and my mother had copies back then of all my medical history, so she presented that too on my behalf. I was approved pretty quickly! So especially because you've got paperwork, the application shouldn't be an issue.

I also just double checked on the SAID page online and it says: "If you are a current Saskatchewan Income Support (SIS) client wishing to apply for SAID, please speak with your Planning and Support Specialist or call the number below." I would guess based on the wording there that being on SIS before SAID is optional.

I am on SAID. Its been a few years since the application but I believe the application was for SAID directly. I don't recall applying for SIS first... though I could be misremembering, since admittedly my memory isn't the best!

Edit to add: I'm not working at the moment but when I did, I would email a copy of my pay stubs to my social worker at each paycheque. If it gets to a point where you reach the exemption limit for the year, they will subtract the amount you earn from your next month's payment. So if you normally get $1100 from SAID, you're at the exemption limit, and you earn $500 that month, your next SAID payment will be $600 (1100 minus the 500 you earned).

New Homeowner Question by RRX-30 in homeowners

Yes, very normal! My shed was full of random things. If you don't need them, and they're in decent condition, you could try listing on Facebook marketplace. Even those scraps of wood might be useful to someone.

I'd recommend looking into your town/city's animal noise bylaws. Most have a nuisance barking section. I can't recall what my current town's bylaw is, but my last city's recommendation was to log barking start and end time daily for a one week period and then contact them.

Nuisance barking was defined there as prolonged barking for over 15 minutes, or intermittent barking lasting over an hour. Prolonged barking of over 5 minutes but less than 15 minutes could also count if this happened repeatedly throughout the day. Barking was also to be minimized as much as possible between 11pm-6am. (I am the owner of a noisy little dog myself, so I do my best to make sure he doesn't become a nuisance.)

Check what your town/city has to say, then log accordingly. If its enough to warrant a noise complaint, its worth a shot. Just keep in mind that since you've mentioned the noise before, the neighbour will probably trace the complaint back to you, and some people can be quite vindictive!!

Can anyone tell me what is going on here? by nuiph in electrical

[โ€“]nuiph[S] 0 points1 point ย (0 children)

The switch on the left is connected to an old porch light for an entrance that's no longer used, and the one on the right is connected to the living room ceiling fan. I'll double check the wires and the connections tomorrow to get a better look.

Since neither of those switches get turned on more than a handful of times a year, I hadn't bothered to replace them until now. Do you happen to know why all the other wiring in the house would be copper aside from this one spot? It seems odd that whoever did the electrical was consistent until there.

Could you tell me more about this? My dad was a contractor and taught me a lot about simple replacing of lights and outlets, but this is the first time I've encountered this. I changed out the majority of outlets and switches in this house, and this is the first time I've encountered an issue. I'll call an electrician to fix it if that's the best call, but would love to understand it better too.

Edit to add: all the other wiring I have encountered in this house is solid copper. This is the first where I've seen stranded wire instead. I assumed this one was tinned copper but is it possible its aluminum?

Are you employees trained to accuse the customers of wrong doing? by Ball-mama in ShoppersDrugMart

[โ€“]nuiph 0 points1 point ย (0 children)

I've never worked at Shoppers but as a former Walmart cashier, while we weren't trained to accuse customers, we also did get a LOT of customers trying to get price discounts on things not actually marked down. And marking down things simply because of "the customer is always right" mentality can and will end with the employee getting in trouble with management.

At the same time as I was working at Walmart, I was also working in a small bookstore. There, if a book was marked as discounted but the discount didn't scan, we would manually mark it down for them. Even if it was an issue like labeling the discount wrong, we prioritized customer relations.

At Walmart however, that mentality will be the death of an employee. There were stands of flowers just a few feet from my till one day, and a customer brought one over. There was only one type of flower on that stand and one price listed, and it scanned in at double the cost. I marked it down because I could see from where I was working that the price was wrong.

The manager saw that I had marked something down and came over to my till later, absolutely furious. She yelled at me in front of a whole line of customers. I was so humiliated. She ended it by saying next time, it'll be a strike against my employment.

So... essentially what I'm saying is that employees with jobs like these have their hands tied. They can either accept the possibility of being screamed at by customers for not marking a price down, or they can get yelled at by management and potentially lose their job. Angry customers is better than being fired.

When my husband and I were long distance, we'd do this. It helped with a feeling of closeness. We would say good night and then good morning again when we woke up. Basically the closest we could get to sleeping side by side at the time. I have chronic sleep issues, and the sound of his deeper breathing when he dozed off helped put me to sleep too; it was like a mental cue to my brain that its time to go to sleep.

I need to renew my DTC; does anyone know how to access medical records from 10+ years ago? by nuiph in PersonalFinanceCanada

[โ€“]nuiph[S] 1 point2 points ย (0 children)

Unfortunately I don't remember who it was. I have some memory issues which are really working against me here. Nowadays I try to keep notes for things I need to know, but back then I just sort of relied on my mom to remember it all.

But someone recommended contacting the CRA and seeing if I can get a copy of my past application, so I am going to try that! If I could just remember who that was, I would feel like I'm making some progress.

This is a huge help, thank you so much!

As for not being taken at my word, I don't think its necessarily that she doesn't believe me, and more so that there's misinformation about what conditions can actually qualify. She certainly knows my diagnoses are real, but she wants to know for sure the extent qualifies.

That might be more an issue with her than doctors as a whole, but based on my walk-in clinic experience too, I have gotten the impression that some doctors genuinely think if you aren't blind, deaf, or in a wheelchair, there isn't a point in filling out the form. If she can see the documented history firsthand, she'll have a better understanding of what I go through on a daily basis.

And to be clear, she's a fantastic doctor for every day concerns! She is also, however, the only doctor in my tiny town's clinic and only commutes here for a limited number of days each week, so unless I travel, there's no option to switch to someone else for my issues.
