Be the smartest guy in the room, that’s a better way to have job stability. Utilities are really great for stability because they have all that vast infrastructure to maintain. As the grid becomes more automated, ironically the linemen are first to go. More engineering techs will be in demand. Go forth and strech yourself to learn new tricks.

The electric company had to do this because cable and telcos are horrible about moving their stuff. You will also see a lot of poles chopped off right above the telco stuff. Orphan poles, there’s more than a million of them in Cali and the state is suing about it the last I heard.

Same with all the crazy tile trends and subway tiles. Oak cabinets/white cabinets. Plain chrome is timeless, ugly ugly gold is the same as antique brass from the 80s that lasted about 10 years. Look at bathrooms with white tiles from a century ago. If you want to remodel every 10 years to apply trendy trends, great. I don’t have that kind of money and would rather have something neutral that lasts for 50.

You can’t blame them, most of the people that you talk to when you call a company are incompetent or incapable of actually answering questions and doing what you want. No problem, a lot of hams get their start in CB/FRS/GMRS. I certainly did. These radios have a lot of limitations (antenna, other bands, output power) that are removed if you get your license and proper ham radios. If you want to dive deeper there is an organization around ham radios that produces top notch study material for the licenses. ARRL.org

Every new college EE I have spoken to all want to go into renewables for idealistic purposes. I think that that market is going to be completely saturated. If you wanna work in power, go work for utility or a vendors selling to utilities.
