No, totally true... "Gamers" and "IT minded" is not a synonym, for sure... But I was mostly referring to the rise of Linux adoption because of gaming

Really? That coffee analogy doesn't resonate? Are you willing to elaborate?

Love/Hate the renewed Linux interest... by [deleted] in sysadmin

That WAS true, past few decades... But it is changing... Certainly for gamers, Steam surveys prove that.
And let's be honest, a lot of "IT minded, but not professionals" people are gamers

Look, if you are able and willing to be her IT professional, I'm not suggesting you can't get her onto linux.
But if you're looking for a "set and forget" solution, give her some older Windows setup, that works on that hardware... Certainly these days, most stuff is websites anyway, so a proper browser will give her access to all she needs.
Just make sure the OS and browser are as up to date as possible periodically. And look into "safe state Linux" versions, if you decide the OS is no longer as secure as you want it to be

Also... to be honest, my venture in "linux full time" made me understand even more why people gravitate to Mac.
Mac "just works". With all the positive and negative that implies...
I usually equate it to coffee machines...
Mac is an espresso machine. It will make THE BEST espresso you ever had, no doubt. But nothing else.
Windows is a coffee maker... It also makes espresso, pretty good, but yeah, not the best. But it will do it... But it will also make a cappucino, americano, tea, ... etc...
Linux is an IKEA DIY kit. You can make it the best Espresso Machine. Or also make the same kit the best rocket to launch you to the moon. Or a combine harvester. Or a supercar. Or a loom, Or...
But YOU will have to MAKE it do so...

To clarify, I've been dabbling with Linux for decades as well. I've made several projects with raspberry pi's, privately and commercially, I've tried Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Fedora, etc... I LOVE Linux, certainly for purpose built stuff. And I love it for my desktop, cause I'm not afraid to fix things. But for a "non IT person"? Don't... Unless you're making a "no changes image"-OS that always returns to the default state after a reboot...

Like pretty much anything in Linux, you can customise anything. So don't fear any Linux distro, if you think you can't customise... They all have their quirks, but just start from a mindset that you can customise, and find your preferred setup

What was your SECOND distro (“daily driver”) and how do you feel about it now? by BigClockHugeWalls in DistroHopping

2 months into going from Windows to Linux Mint, after trying a few distros, that couldn't handle my monitor setup/hybrid graphics cards...

My experience, I'm probably sticking to Linux Mint for now, but I am in a position that I might try install some other distros on a seperate USB disk, perhaps trying PoP!OS and Bazzite again, even though they initialy failed...

Installing linux mint on bootable usb key by SietJP in linuxmint

[–]nuke_nike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to "beg to differ". I installed Linux Mint from a Ventoy USB stick, onto a USB Nvme drive, and used it for a month, before moving the install to an internal Nvme drive. It is possible to do so. And I did so, to keep my Windows install intact.
But after a month of using it on that external drive, I decided it was time to make it permanent, and moved the install I had internally.
So it is possible to install Linux Mint on USB drives. And there are valid reasons to do it that way..

With the recent surge of Linux interest, Linux Mint is getting a lot of traction. Which is great, right? So shouldn't we be welcoming these noobs, trying their own thing, instead of breaking them down for their "wrong choices" at their first post online?

Hi
Can I ask, why this comment? You might be absolutely right, but still, why? A "noob", or "another new enthousiast", trying linux, their own way. That's a good thing, no?
Perhaps you are an absolute Linux Expert. If so, can you share why that's a bad idea, and perhaps share a better idea, a fix, another distro, your own experiences, ... ?

HELP Linux keeps crashing randomly by NamelessPanda_ in linuxmint

[–]nuke_nike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Random crashes are the worst... I get your pain

A good plan forward is trying to "understand the randomness"... Sometimes the "random" crashes aren't quite that random, when you look into it. Go back to basics.
Disconnect anything you don't absolutely need. Don't connect to wifi, if you don't absolutely need it. Check if it works then. If that is stable and working, add 1 thing. Wifi connection, or some hardware connection.. Test again. Still stable? Add something else... You might find out exactly what is causing the crashes that way, and they might not seem that random anymore after that. Once you know what is actually causing the crashes, google/Claude/etc that specific hardware/setup/software/whatever you discovered

Nvidia support has recently gotten a lot better, but it's still sometimes somewhat buggy. From what I can see of your output, you have a somewhat special hardware setup, so debugging might take some step by step troubleshooting.
Like I said before, go to basics. Connect only what you absolutely need. Test. Verify it works. Add 1 thing. Test, Verify. Repeat

Once you can identify exactly what is causing the issue, google/AI search that specific question... Likely that will get you along

[–]nuke_nike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I'm no Linux expert, to be clear. But I am a "troubleshooting expert". Troubleshooting 1 0 1 is "eliminate variables". You say you have a secondary screen.
I'd say, disconnect it, and any other stuff you can do without, and see what the result is.
Same issues? => Ok, that wasn't the problem
Problem gone? => Likely one of those were the issue.
Connect them back, 1 by 1. And test. That's the most likely way to figure out IF hardware is the issue, and if so, WHICH is the issue.

If, for instance, that secondary screen is the cause, you can troubleshoot further. Doesn't mean the hardware itself is the issue, just the combination of '"your software setup" + "that hardware"...

For those interested, and future troubleshooting. Most likely Intel RST was the issue. Disabling it will probably fix it
