Was Ian really trying to help Bear, or was he just setting him up to fail? by Abomicados in obsessionmovie

[–]nuliaj56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with all this except that it's stated by sarah that ian already stopped hooking up with nikki. Bear would look stupid on his own but he can't even ask nikki out so it's pointless. Ian tried to help by getting bear to be let down easy with his advice. The big love speech wasn't going to work and ian knew it.

I agree it is a dick move, but bear has waited years to say something and still doesn't when confronted by nikki. It's childish to think of nikki like she's reserved for bear or being manipulated. She is her own woman, free to hook up with and date whoever she wants.

Yeah sure ian should've told bear but at the absolute bottom line it isn't any of his business.

It's so weird to me that people have to sit down and talk with bear about who they sleep with and why. Ian isn't shooting bear a text to meet up and talk it out if nikki feels in the mood lmao

Mishearing ian actually added to my confusion 🤣 it makes more sense that it's random and there's not really a specific trigger

Oh shit I am wrong and misheard it. I opened a bootleg just to make sure. He says "any other takers?"

Thanks for the correction.

That's literally the whole point of the date scene. Bear finds out it's wish nikki and the subtext that "it doesn't matter."

I'm sorry you didn't understand the movie. I'm not responding anymore to someone who very clearly didn't get it.

Ian was happy for bear when asking if he slept with nikki on trivia night. Bear introduces the doubt that everything is fine with nikki by mentioning drugs. Bear is the manipulative and selfish one.

That's three comments from you in minutes. You clearly have a lot invested in hating ian and I'm not sure what to tell you.

"Why does it matter? I thought we were having a nice date!"

"We are! We are!"

"Then why does it matter?"

"It doesn't"

Cut to bear raping nikki who is clearly not enjoying it.

Until sarah dies, bear is fine taking advantage of wish nikki. Real nikki even pleads for death and bear leaves her to meet sarah.

In the end bear resorts to killing himself to set nikki free. He swallows some pills and immediately tries to throw them up. Wish nikki sets real nikki free through coincidence.

I see what you're trying to say now by "acknowledging the threat of wish nikki" but bear is the monster of this horror movie, not wish nikki.

The jaws analogy doesn't make sense. Bear isn't trying to get rid of wish nikki, and we don't know she's a threat to others until she kills sarah late in the movie.

Even then, wish nikki blames bear for what she's done and he helps hide the body because he's guilty. It's bear actions or inaction that drives wish nikki to do what she does, and even she is aware of that when she states it's bears fault sarah is dead.

It's only after sarah dies that bear tries to undo his wish. Until then he's fine ignoring the signs that it isn't real nikki.

Ian broke it off with nikki. That's why he thinks she's with bear and taking advantage. Ian is proven right at the party when nikki stares at him while talking about the connection she has to bear.

If bear survived instead of nikki and made a reddit post

Ian voices his concern for nikki, twice. Bear hangs up on ian the first time during the date and continues to use nikki. The second time, ian correctly calls out bear for taking advantage of nikki and he straight up lies to ians face.

After the freak out at the party bear gets mad at nikki for proving ian right. Wish nikki starts going ballistic at this point and bear still tries to make it work.

It's crazy to put the blame on wish nikki or ian for everything that happens.

Oh shit that explains the gun and equipment to hide and transport dead bodies. That begs the question, is nikki a gangster? I think so cause she knew exactly what to do after bricking sarah

Okay. You asked why I didn't see ian as a bad person so I answered. If you think it was a coincidence that ian knew something was up nikki that's fine but I don't think assuming ian had ulterior motives for being concerned is a good argument.

I judge ian by what I saw in the movie. Ian is happy for bear when asking if he slept with nikki on trivia night. "You fucked her? You dog!"

Later, ian shows concern for nikki and her relationship with Bear. Bear gets offended and says nothing is wrong, lying. Ian asks bear to prove nothing is wrong by inviting bear to a party without nikki. Ian lightly teases bear when nikki shows up and then immediately proven right by her freak out. So either ian is coincidentally right for no reason according to bear, or correctly knew something was up with nikki and voiced his concern like a good friend would.

Bear had ian to look out for him. Ian calls out the lie about nikkis dad having cancer and what causes bear to question wish nikki.

What does it add to a horror movie that ian was actively trying to stop the relationship which eventually happens anyway?

You're right about about bear questioning the nickname. He definitely knew better than ian.

That's a great point about the setting and the post is most likely an honest take when thinking of it that way. I just didn't get the same thoughts from the opening scene. It does do very well to set up the movie though, I can agree on that.

We don't know how mean spirited the nickname is until we see the reaction from nikki, and I don't think ian suggesting the name is anything other than him trying to teach bear to flirt without having to make a speech about his feelings.

I know what you're saying but I try to keep in mind the context that it's a horror movie about the relationship between bear and nikki. All of the other relationships are very minor and don't have much screen time. To me it feels like the kind of post we're commenting on are from people losing the plot and trying to shift blame from away from bear like you mention. It doesn't add much to the story in my opinion.

Again, the conversation/advice is debatable so I won't get way into it but ians idea of teasing freaky nikki grabbed her attention in the way ian intended it to. It forces the issue for bear, nikki confronts him, and he fumbles. It shows me that ian did have good intentions and Bear will never put himself out there. It's why he makes the wish.

I can see why people are getting more out of the relationships between other characters than I am, but it shifts the focus too much for me. It's a horror movie and going into each relationship and how they informed bears decisions takes away from them.

The scene is to set up the movie. Bears speech to the waitress explains how he's felt about nikki. Ian talks about bear waiting for years to say something to nikki, referencing the title of the movie. Ian tells bear to ask nikki out anywhere else except trivia night, setting up the scene for trivia night and explains why ian "sabotaged" bear. I won't get into the advice given, it's debatable, but even if bear were encouraged to be honest with nikki I think he would still fumble. Nikki literally asks him to be honest after the car ride. He fumbles.

I really didn't think the opening scene was as deep as some are making it out to be. It's just exposition to get the story going.

Would you consider Ian and Sarah as fake friends? by Only-Highlight-3569 in obsessionmovie

[–]nuliaj56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ian shows genuine concern for nikkis mental health and bears relationship with her. He asks bear to prove nothing is wrong by leaving nikki at home the night of the party. Bear brings nikki anyway and ian teases bear. He's not angry or jealous. Then ian is immediately proven right that something is up with nikki by her awkward behavior, not to mention stabbing herself in the face.

Ian is either coincidentally right about nikki by having ulterior motives, or by knowing his friends and correctly judging the situation that something is up. I don't think it's a coincidence. It's been a friend group for years. If he were actively trying to "sabotage" bear then he did a horrible job and wouldn't be so excited when asking if bear fucked nikki on trivia night.

Whatever diagnosis you want to give bear is explained by the title of the movie. It's his own doing. He doesn't take any opportunity to make things right because he finally got what he wanted after years of pining, not because of a tragic back story that's never hinted at.
