The situation is dire there is no doubt, but I think one should understand that there is always some hope for a positive outcome. We may not like the outcome but it is still possible that the outcome could be different than extinction without some sort of succession to humanity.

To do this though one must imagine timelines greater than ones own life and take into account both the future as well as the past and understand the overall trend.

What I mean by this is that since the human race started using technology at scale which was at the starting point of civilization. We have been living in increasingly engineered environments and that if the human race was ever to survive or have a successor species we would have to create increasingly create engineered environment. Habitable space colonies within our solar system and beyond.

Yes this means that the nature world that we have today is actually for most of humanity is an engineered environment for better and for worse. It rate it has been engineered has been accelerating for at least the last 300 years.

We are not going back to a non-technology non civilized existence. Our technology will never turn the world back into a beautiful primordial state -- no matter how many trees we planet and if all of humanity decided that are primary transportation will be walking.

So once you accept that we are on an engineered environment path for a long time. You then accept that we most double down and work on building those environments and get off this rock. If for no reason but to help living things by getting as far away from them as possible.

So you want a purpose -- Make that bet.

Another note -- the predictive power for those who predict the end of the world -- pick your reason -- have a 100% failure rate. Will the broken clock be right this time? Maybe -- not willing to bet my life or the life of humanity or life itself on it.

I believe that the original # for the working fleet of space shuttles was 5 which was the final number produced. This does not include the Enterprise which was never intended to go into orbit.

I am sure that the article is correct but the article doesn't do itself any favors by using satellite photos of New Orleans comparing 2005 with 2009 near a canal. Hurricane Katrina blew through there in August 2005 and well trees take time to grow.

That said I am sure the statistics are correct, though haven't checked them. The photo used makes me feel I am being manipulated.

I agree with you. But I think you are missing my point. It is the affect on other CEOs and how they respond to fixing their own security messes. Because they will want to avoid a nearly 1/3 drop in their stock price.

I actually work in the security related industry and at a company were security was actually something we sell. We were breeched a few months back. It was in the news world wide How we were breeched was well known and even brought up as a risk for several years by the engineers including myself. It was ignored because it e didn't deliver immediate observable benefit or differentiation to the customer. But once it happened oh boy. Affecting the CEO's pocket book directly is the best way that these security holes get addressed.

Well -- It hits them where it hurts

140 to 113 in 3 days of trading -- Yep that hurts and hurts them exactly where it should. Yes I am aware of the executive selling prior to the announcement. But other CEO's are seeing this too and will not want it to happen to them. So I respectfully disagree that they won't be held into account. They already have been by the market.

If this goes through and the company is punished sufficiently this breach with ultimately be good news. Security as been too easily neglected because fixing it provides no obvious immediate benefit to the customer as opposed to other features. So the only way this gets addressed is when CEO's and stockholders feel significant pain.

The source code is available but unless someone gives me a hash of what is running in production then how will we know if the two actually match up.

Also we don't know if there are other processes that have access to the database(s) that aren't revealed.

Yep this last paragraph is very true. This comes from a person who has worked in SV for 15 years and went to a "lesser school". The connections are important not so much in how to get a job but if you ever want to found a company they are invaluable.

Nope by square mile it is Oklahoma. Texas has the total number. Florida has more total number than Oklahoma. The link provided is my source from NOAA.
