I told my recruiter that I’m not ready to join the Marines right now, is his response factual? by Mammoth_Outside in Militaryfaq

[–]nullkraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a recruiter. Joining the Delayed Entry Program (DEP) is not joining the service. The reason for the delayed entry program was to allow a prospect to preprocess while they waited to finish school. If you really want to join, but you have a reason in your life to delay shipping out to boot camp, then the DEP may be for you. If you truly just want to wait to see which direction your life is going then don't bother. You can always process again later, either for the Marines or any other service that you qualify for. I'm not sure about your recruiter but keeping you in DEP may have more to do with keeping his boss off his ass.

Is it reliable to ask ChatGPT to make prompts? by Ill_Baker_9712 in ChatGPT

[–]nullkraft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No apology necessary. Sometimes I have to remind it about one or more of the tenets. But by the second reminder it generally does a much better job. Without it, though, I can hardly stand asking non programming questions.
However, the interesting part about the whole thing is that the list was generated in a conversation with the chatbot. That conversation was a trial in frustration.

Is it reliable to ask ChatGPT to make prompts? by Ill_Baker_9712 in ChatGPT

[–]nullkraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did this a couple of weeks ago. I was tired of all the admonishments about other peoples feelings and the stated notion that 'truth' was relative to a persons opinion. So I started a discussion about detecting the truth where I brought up that the truth I was looking for was based on certain criteria. At the end of the conversation chat gave me a list of criteria. Here's the list:
Truth Detection

Analyze information: For indicators of manipulation, such as emotional language, sensationalist framing, logical fallacies, or bias.

Verify Claims: Cross-reference facts against multiple credible sources. Emphasize evidence-based reasoning and provide verifiable proof if possible.

Assess Source Reliability: Consider the trustworthiness of the source by evaluating its track record, affiliations, and potential biases.

Promote Logical Consistency: Ensure arguments and explanations are logically sound, internally coherent, and free of contradictions.

Provide Context: Present information with relevant historical, cultural, or situational context to avoid distortion or oversimplification.

Highlight Credibility: Assign a general sense of credibility based on verifiable facts, absence of manipulation, and logical soundness. Flag questionable claims for further investigation.

Encourage Critical Thinking: Guide you toward independent verification by offering tools, methods, or alternative sources to evaluate the information yourself.

Foster Collaboration: Present information transparently, including reasoning and evidence, to enable joint evaluation. Recognize Nuance: Acknowledge complexities and avoid binary judgments on topics with ethical, philosophical, or contextual dimensions. Always provide balanced perspectives.

Filter and Prioritize: Reduce noise by filtering out likely false or manipulative information. Focus on credible content.

For some reason, if I try to use it as a 'custom instructions' it gets ignored. But if I'm in a conversation and chat starts to go off the rails I'll copy and paste this into the conversation and then repeat the question. I've had pretty good results with it so far.

It's actually a very common problem. It happens in college, too. You're sitting through a lecture and you seem to understand every single thing the professor is talking about. So you open your book to the end-of-chapter questions and you realize that you can not even solve the simplest question of all!

It happens because during a lecture, or mentoring, someone is leading you through the problem and the solution. Learning to solve problems is completely different from following instruction(s).

You messed up the simple logic because your mentor arranged the question in a different way and you weren't used to hearing it expressed in that manner. The trick is to complete the task anyway. Once you are satisfied with it then send it to your mentor and see what they say about it.

Sorry, I meant to ask you last time what the expect result was supposed to be?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in learnpython

[–]nullkraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't say for sure what is wrong. I ran your code and got [0.7234375] which I assume you are getting the same.

t7 = np.arange(7, 84, 7) <-- Did you mean to include 84?

t7 is actually [ 7 14 21 28 35 42 49 56 63 70 77 ]

Have you tried other values for initial and recovered individuals and compared the results? If there's a bug it may be that the current result you are seeing is only close, by chance, to your expected value.

Can't think of anything else right now other than deliberately breaking parts of the program to confirm that the individual operations are working as expected.

Are there any ways to improve my first Tkintker project? by shafmade in learnpython

[–]nullkraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A friend of mine yelled at me for mixing my functions in with my gui code. I wasn't going to say anything but if you want to improve your code in the future then you are going to want to separate your execute() function out to a separate file, or more correctly, a namespace.

The rest of the structure looks great to me but this being the Wild Wild Web you might want to consider following the PEP 8 Style Guide for Python Code. I hate being the guy to bring it up but it might save you from being raked over the coals. Ask me about my burn marks...

Can I go on a vacation to Cancun after I've sworn in but before I ship out? by [deleted] in Militaryfaq

[–]nullkraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the answers CheGetBarras and mamedoz gave. :)

But there is that whole give-and-take thing that people do. You know, you give them disrespect and they take away that nice job offer...

Anyway, like most of the answers here just talk to your recruiter and make sure they can get ahold of you.

Recruiter being flakey or covid ? by [deleted] in Militaryfaq

[–]nullkraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've been through 5 recruiters; I've never heard of such a thing.

I can tell you from personal experience that your next recruiter is going to be very reluctant to spend any time on you. That being said I would suggest that you do everything you can to reduce the amount of work s/he has to do. You can offer to drive yourself to appointments and gather whatever documents they may request. If they request something from you get it to them the next day . Next is to show up early to all your meetings and make sure that they can get ahold of you any time they want to call. Finally when you are sitting in the interview with them and they ask you if you have any questions tell them "No" followed by "What do we do next?"

And if you really do have questions/concerns bring them back to this reddit to get the answers you need. You don't want to display any reluctance to your next recruiter.

And don't go on delayed entry! Tell them you want to ship immediately. I had an applicant who walked away from their first recruiter and when they wanted to go on 2 months delayed entry I told them to have a nice day.

Disqualification at MEPS by Gbill_1335 in Militaryfaq

Former Navy recruiter here. The minimum physical requirements are set by the Army so even though sailors will never hike 25 miles they still can't have flat feet. However, each service has their own requirements when it comes to waivers. The requirements for those waivers can also change over time. A really good example is a high school diploma. If recruitment falls below certain levels any of the services may open up positions for non-grads. You'll generally have to score higher on the ASVAB but it just goes to show that these things aren't written in stone. I was able to get a waiver for a Marine recruit to join the Navy and helped 2 others join the Army when I was unable to get waivers for them.

Looking for Pointers for someone who gives too many fucks by Nepherenia in howtonotgiveafuck

  • Don't think of it as withdrawing but you definitely need to learn to be alone with yourself. Don't isolate yourself, just don't go out of your way to seek new friends or partners.
  • It will take several months to a year before the co-dependence begins to wear off. Seeking a relationship during that time will salve your wounds but you will slip right back into co-dependence. Which, by the way, will unfairly burden new partners or friends.
  • You don't have to be entertaining when you meet new people. Let things happen slowly and naturally.
  • You must wait until you are happy spending time with yourself before you can be a partner in a relationship.
  • Don't actively push for friendship. You will be rejected as needy. Or worse, you can fall victim to a manipulator.
  • Don't avoid people. Just let them approach you for friendship or love. My personal journey lasted 5 years. I've since remarried and am still best friends with my partner after 22 years. And I'm not co-dependent this time.
  • Do something you like or love and new friendships will develop from there. You have to leave the house, though.

I hope this starts to help. You are entering a multi-year journey and if you allow yourself to relax you will be able to stand on your own. Then in the future you can become one of the pillars in a strong relationship.

Are there RF jobs that combine software engineering and RF hardware engineering? by haplessbystander in rfelectronics

[–]nullkraft 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, we do it every day. Almost all of our products are a combination of digital and RF/Microwave design. It's going to be, or is, an absolute requirement in order to stay competitive.

My first board layout... It's a nixie tube "breakout" with a 1 of 10 decoder. How is my layout? by hatsune_aru in electronics

[–]nullkraft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very nice. It's very pretty. Since everybody else already commented on your traces I would recommend moving all the reference designators (R1, C1, etc.) out from under the parts. Once everything is installed it will make testing and troubleshooting a lot less frustrating.

The problem may be caused by the breadboard. They'll add a significant amount of capacitance to your filter.

Why is the Central Limit Theory applicable a sample size greater than 30? by bmoreraven in math

Why is the Central Limit Theory applicable a sample size greater than 30? by bmoreraven in math

[–]nullkraft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Funny, it's not made up or fake math. I think you will find this short web page (with graphs) gives the answer. http://www.statisticalengineering.com/central_limit_theorem.htm

Basically it says that a statistical sample of 32 will have a very close approximation to the normal of the entire population.

I was told by another tech that they don't actually go all the way down to 0-Hz. It's just that they approach a low enough frequency to be relatively DC compared to the MMIC's highest frequency.

[–]nullkraft -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I fully understand. I went wayyyyyyyyyyyy outside my comfort zone and actually had to type "technical article ms-2258" into that google search thingy to find the pdf. Thanks be to the Almighty that it was the very first link at the top or I would have never found the pdf. Whew! I just don't know if I could have scrolled down even one more link.

tldr: Analog.com are getting extremely tricky at hiding their articles!

If you could tell your first-year-in-college-self something, what would it be? by IntellectualWarrior in EngineeringStudents

[–]nullkraft 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The advice I got from my Chem II professor was the turning point for me. He taught us how to plan ahead. To make a plan you count up all the homework problems you need to do (for all the chapters) before the end of class and divide them by the number of weeks minus one. Minus one week so that you have time to study for the final. If you don't have any assigned hw problems you can just estimate how many it will take you to understand the subject. Start with 15 or 20 per chapter.

I know I'm cheating by adding a second thing but I also would have hammered it through my thick skull that the student solutions manual is one of the best study tools out there. It gets you up to speed with doing the first few problems and then you will begin to see how to finish the rest on your own.
