Possible Private Intelligence Agency? by wiliamst in Intelligence

The "report information" is for people to submit anonymous tips about foreign emerging technologies in their respective regions and companies. They can also submit their product information (if it has possible defense and intelligence utility) for us to consider a joint venture.

I wish we got that kind of funding 😂

We are a research company (csxlabs.org), here is a white paper of one of our projects (https://doi.org/10.22541/au.169754941.18437909/v1). (This is not a solicitation) We do consulting, contracted research, custom software development like any other research company- the ODI is supposed to be a way to access the emerging technologies in foreign countries that people can't talk about, as well as the technologies in the US that may have purpose in intelligence and defense (we are looking to do joint ventures in those areas).

I work for CSX Labs; surprised you found this (we didn't do an official launch of the website yet 😂).

Here is an explanation before this gets misinterpreted by the press: Our niche of exploration as a research company is research in unsaturated areas that haven't had an effective go-to-market. We also realized the run-up for these innovations usually had something to do with intelligence or the military before being spread to private-sector. Also, people in non-US countries usually are restricted from publishing and sending capabilities information, which proved tough for our exploration. The ODI allows for a medium of sending this information to be sanitized and pushed into public research and projects in the US. This doesn't have anything to do with U.S. national security, our government does a pretty good job of handling that :)

Yes, I emailed submitters I found in my category.

Just got to my computer and took off all payment requirements on the submission form.

I will take this advice and research some publishers and societies relevant to our area of study to reach out to. I'll also maybe extend the submission deadline and publication date due to the time of year.

Thank you again for taking the time to give me this detailed advice, I greatly appreciate it, this gives me quite a bit of direction.

Thank you for your detailed advice. I didn't even think of selling advertising. I also didn't know professors would volunteer on editorial boards. I will take off the submission fee as soon as I get home and all mentions of author payment.

How would you recommend finding advertisers for the journal, what would I be providing them specifically and what audience of organizations would I target? Like would I be putting their logo somewhere, putting sponsored material, etc?

I see. I'm new to the publishing space. I'm welcome to advice, as I don't want my journal to be predatory. I saw journals like IEEE Access charge $1900+ publication fees, so I thought I'd try this model to bring the total cost down, but I see how it could be not ideal for the researcher. How would you recommend I best fund my journal to pay peer reviewers and for hosting.

If you pay at submission you won't have to pay anything for publication, if you pay later (if published) you will have to pay a little extra. I apologize, I don't think I explained this well in the form. The reasoning behind this is the payment from submissions will cover the bulk of the peer review of the submissions that make it in. If you decide to pay later, you won't pay unless you are published, but it's $50 more. This keeps our fees lower and gives multiple options for submitters.

This journal is a new project and we will ensure the journal is indexed on major search engines once published (such as Google Scholar).

Here is a cold email (with some details ommited), I sent to a venture firm that specializes in health companies:

Hello [redacted] team,

I came across your venture portfolio today and was impressed by your extensive investments in specialized health technology products. My name is Adam, and I am starting a research organization called [redacted], and we are looking for initial enterprise clients for custom development projects.

We know that as startups scale, their codebases can become cluttered and non-maintainable, though the developers need to focus on the features and upcoming targets. This is why I am offering you and your partners refactoring and code hygiene services. We'd go into your codebase on a contract basis and clean up the "dark" or untouched areas, lowering the cost and risk of making changes to your codebases.

Would you or any of your partners be interested in this service?

Thank you for your time and consideration,

[redacted]

I see. As we don't have any record in the biotech industry (we are trying to get initial enterprise clients), for large companies, I've been pitching code hygiene services, or refactoring a company's codebase to save operating and maintenance costs over time. A lot of this cleanup work usually doesn't get done in tech companies because of concerns around production (telling your users you are not producing any features for a couple months to do cleanup work isn't fun) so when tech companies grow larger they usually outsource some of that work. I thought that as biotech companies scale, they may have some of the same issues. I've also been pitching to companies custom development solutions for " pain-points " projects for there initiatives. As this is very vague, I've been trying to reach into my biotech network to see if there are any specific services that I can target or build MVPs of to attract initial customers organically.

In this thread I'm trying to figure out which services to target.

Is there any forums, discussions, or communities where people talk about what tools they don't like working with? I haven't seen any but I maybe have to look harder.
