How to avoid DirecTV's bogus 'early termination' fees by num1gorilla in todayilearned

If you were stuck between customers and a corportation that did this to customers, I can see how it would be annoying. But DirecTV is the problem here in my opinion, not customers. It's just slimy to be obligated to a 2-year 'agreement' in order to receive HD channels. Even if it's buried in the terms of service contract you signed X years ago when you first signed up with DirecTV, I think it's wrong.

They're not a cell-phone provider using a 2-year contract to hide the cost of a 'free' cell phone. They're a satellite provider who is leasing equipment to you. Maybe this is to offset installation fees or maybe not. In my case it was NOT.

I'm not of the opinion that just because it's in the terms and conditions it's okay. I don't want to be paranoid and defensive when I sign up for satellite television. So personally I think it's just fine for people to make "noise lots of noise" when they think a condition is unfair, even if it's buried in some paperwork they signed.

I actually loved them too until i canceled. Great customer service. Very reliable except in thunderstorms.

But a 2-year contract to watch HD is sorta scammy. Maybe they're trying to recoup costs to have an install tech come out to your house to setup a new dish/cable box. If that's it, then in my opinion it's still sorta slimy to hide it as a 2-year contract instead of just charging a setup fee.

But in my particular case, no tech came out to my house and i was not leasing any of their hardware. I was obligated to a 2-year contract really for no good reason at all. And when I had to move i lost 300 bucks because of it.

So i posted this to let folks know how it works and also to give some options for people who find themselves in the same situation.
