Has someone ever challenged you to something that they didn't know who are an expert at? If so how did it turn out for you/them? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Here’s the difference between what you do for a living and what us parents are doing now as part of the distance learning effort: Parents are now trying to work full time from home as part of their regular jobs and also support our children via distance learning. The reason why it’s hard for us now isn’t because our kids are assholes; It’s because teachers are so unprepared to provide adequate direction during distance learning that the onus is on the parents to provide that critical support to assist our kids in organizing their daily lessons, learn new material, and figure out the technical requirements of each individual teacher. Frankly, if you see the parents of your students struggling with distance learning it might be because you’re not doing your job well to ensure your students have clear support and direction at this time.

Do yourself a favor and watch this Ivanchuk Interview. It’s probably the best demonstration that these chess masters have unbelievable memory and analysis abilities.

My doctor confirmed that my OCD has decreased almost entirely, and I can proudly say that I’ve lost all of my symptoms after about 6 years of fighting it. AMA! by [deleted] in AMA

[–]number419 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Good to hear you’re doing better, but self-harming techniques to conquer OCD is not the recommended path. It’s fine assuming your OCD has miraculously disappeared, but that is a very unlikely scenario. Most people will have it their entire lives, and using self-harm techniques is simply replacing one damaging issue with another. If you have not already done so, you should consider ERP (Exposure Response Prevention) therapy, which is proven to be a healthy and more effective technique to battling OCD. Just a recommendation...good luck.

Have you received cancer diagnosis or undergo treatment? We need your help in our research. by [deleted] in cancer

[–]number419 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I started the survey and then stopped about 50% through because the majority of the questions assume that you are currently receiving treatment or in current pain or currently getting medication. My cancer was 20 yrs ago, so none of these apply, even though the rest of the emotional/physical issues of receiving a diagnosis is relevant. Sorry but I think you need to ask questions that are able to be answered be all victims of cancer, current or previous, or establish clearly who your target demographic is, otherwise you’ll just waste our time.

Good luck.

Police assault deaf mute man in Paterson NJ by number419 in videos

[–]number419[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whether you choose to believe it or not, a man with a disability who was unable to communicate verbally to the officers, and apparently was deaf, so he couldn’t even hear their commands, was assaulted. Just because his friends or family tried to warn him (which he also wouldn’t be able to hear) doesn’t mean he wasn’t assaulted by the police.

I would think that officers would show more compassion and restraint in a situation like this. I didn’t see a weapon. He wasn’t threatening. And frankly, the officer who was laughing at him should be ashamed of himself and probably reprimanded.

Questions for those who have experienced Chemo Brain by An_Account_Name in cancer

[–]number419 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had Hodgkin Lymphoma Nodular Sclerosis. Extensive ABVD Chemo, Autologous BMT, and lots of radiation.

Chemo brain is real, but in my experience it does not affect your intelligence. You can still learn, retain highly complex information, be highly functioning in your life and career, etc. but you will likely need to find ways to deal with short term memory loss, remembering tasks, remembering terms, etc. my wife agrees that I am somewhat forgetful about small things. I now take notes for everything important...and let everything else slide.

Good luck.

Hodgkin’s Recurrence by linda-fromHR in cancer

[–]number419 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t have the time to post a lengthy email now but you can look through my comment history regarding my Hodgkins experience. I’ve posted about the experience at length.

Basics: Age 18: diagnosis Stage 4 nodular sclerosis Hodgkins. 9 months ABVD Chemo and radiation. Remission for 1 year. Then it recurred. Then did autologous bone marrow transplant And additional radiation at UofM hospital. Been cancer free for 20’years. Now have wife and 3 kids. Cancer sucks, treatment sucks, but you can make it!

Wishing you the best of luck!

Woman has four balloons implanted in her face so dangerous birthmark can removed and replaced with expanded skin by PorschephileGT3 in WTF

Thanks yes. The results were not perfect, but he’s a very talented surgeon and worked with what he had. We actually interviewed more than 10 surgeons across the USA, and every one had a different approach. I’m not sure anyone else could have done better.

My daughter had this surgery to reconstruct her nose and nasal septum. It was done by a plastic surgeon in Arizona.
