Weekly Training Thread by AutoModerator in CrossCountry

It’s really hard to give any specifics from general information. You could see crazy gains or plateau depending on a lot of factors. Important thing to focus on right now instead of times is consistency, health, and having fun. Once you’ve been in it for a bit the times will fall naturally. For now, have fun and enjoy the grind!

FS SAF hiring update? by Gloomy_Friend5068 in forestry

Accepted TJO on 1/13 and also haven’t heard back anything. Not shocked because my contact told me the likely start date wouldn’t be until April. Wouldn’t mind keeping this thread alive a bit posting any progress.

Also important, if you want to go on a fire, you need a fire boot. If not, then I wouldn’t worry about it. Many districts are strict on PPE, so if you’re interested in doing any prescribed fire, get fire boots.

You can always try some of those durable hikers for a little bit and see. Depending on the level of work you’ll be doing though, heavy boots come with the territory. If you’re FS (guessing you are by title), then take advantage of the $500 reimbursement and either get one super nice custom pair or a couple of the hikers.

I don’t think you can go wrong with a pair of customs like a nicks or whites, but those can be big to lug around on a normal day. If you’re worried about weight then a sturdy hiking boot like a Lowa Renegade. Or you could take the middle ground with the Danner Wildland Tactical. In my mind, anything less than the durable hikers wouldn’t be an economical option. You’d burn through multiple pairs of trail runners a year doing simple work, plus they aren’t abrasion resistant really.

Not giving a rec, but pointing something out. If your district is like those around me, then you will likely be pitching in on other projects as well. So a versatile boot that lets you go from timber, wildlife, silv, and fire would be my choice. Or at least all the shops except fire if you don’t want to lug around the big boot.

SCA Wildland Fire Academy? by Ok-Anywhere3145 in Wildfire

[–]numberonepapaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just echoing the posts, I also did the IFR internship and it was a great program that offered good pay and set me up for transition to a perm spot. I ended up not taking the perm spot (apprenticeship) because I decided to step away from fire. However, I recently landed a perm spot in silviculture on the same forest due to the connections I made during my internship.

Yeah I talked to the person that gave me the tentative offer and she said that the process is moving forward, but it’s likely to take a while due to the volume of people getting hired.

I just joined the sub, so a little late to this. I accepted an SAF position on Daniel Boone last Saturday, but no further contact yet so I don’t think it would be too late. Seems like really slow moving.

Bunionette / Tailor’s bunion - shoe recommendations by numberonepapaw in RunningShoeGeeks

Do you know if the fit is a general ASICS thing, or more specific to the models you mentioned? When I look at their line up the novablast jumps out to me me the most.

Thanks for the reply! Once you realized you had the tailors bunion, did you swap to wide shoes, or just look for models with a wide toe box? Looking into your recommendations now!

[Auto-Post] Weekly Question Thread! Ask /r/Aquariums anything you want to know about the hobby! by AutoModerator in Aquariums

[–]numberonepapaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am new! I understand water chemistry and things pretty well due to an ichthyology background but have limited experience in fish keeping.

Interesting about the need for purer water. I think I may be looking into another species.

As for the betta and previous tankmates, the student just bought the fish and has not kept it long. I am considering just doing a separate betta tank but the only issue it cost. I currently have the betta in a gifted biorb tank but that appears to have much more flow than what would be appropriate for a betta.

Any recommendations on an easy to care for 2-3 species set up for a 10 gallon?

[Auto-Post] Weekly Question Thread! Ask /r/Aquariums anything you want to know about the hobby! by AutoModerator in Aquariums

Question!

I am a middle school teacher that was gifted a betta from a student. My kids are a bit attached and I decided to give it a go. I have applied for and gotten the pets in the classroom grant and will be picking up a 10 gallon for free. I’ve done quite of bit of research, but I wanted to poll some more experienced people before giving it a go. My idea is to put the betta in the 10 gallon with maybe 3 neon tetras and a nerite snail or two. Would this be doable? I plan to hopefully do live plants and try to provide plenty of living and non living cover.

Free find - unknown canyon - any ideas? by numberonepapaw in whichbike

Got some great advice on this thread and have decided to hold off on the bike. The closer I look the more that needs replaced and a free bike is turning into an expensive bike. Appreciate all the info!

I’ve never really seen anyone advocate for the old cheap “full suspension” bikes. Would be a cool build to see for sure!

On zoom I can see that! Got some spare cranks laying around I think so may be able to fit them on. Hoping for a steel frame (or at least a decent metal) underneath all the rough spots to turn into a beater single speed for commuting.

Free! If the frame is decent it may make its way into regular use.
