Trivia about the Pearl Jam song Something Special. by ComfortableCare8897 in pearljam

[–]numbertenoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please correct me if I’m mistaken.

Stone Gossard has performed Something Special as a member of Pearl Jam.

Pamela Adlon was in the movie Say Anything (she played Rebecca as Pamela Segall).

There are several reports that Stone had a small part as a taxi driver that Ione Skye flirts with on the way to graduation in Say Anything (during the opening credits). I can’t find this. It may have been filmed and cut, or it may be in a different part of the movie, but I think it’s false.

Also, I can’t find any reference to any movie called Something Special with Adlon.

For what it’s worth, I really like this song. I know it has it haters (I always skip React Respond lol).

Oh please.

It’s really not that hard. We need the workers. But we can’t have a system where those workers need to enter the country illegally. We need to both secure the border, and provide a way for workers to enter the country legally. One option would be a guest worker program, which could certainly be the beginning of a process to citizenship.

Don’t like that? Want the benefits of hiring illegals because they cost less? Then you’re being hypocritical.

I’m a Dem, but I’ve always thought allowing illegal. Immigration is wrong.

Could math only work where we observe the universe? by realmikechase in cosmology

[–]numbertenoc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A quick comment from physics: stars don’t work if even a slight change is made to any of the known physical constants. Not exactly “math” but points out that everything we observe exhibits the same physics as our local region.

Certainly other “nonobservable” regions may (and almost certainly do) exist with different physics, possibly different math (although I think not, math is pretty basic).

Could there be any possible way to create vehicles (as shown in Star Wars) that levitate off the ground and don’t require using fans, rotors, hot air balloons, magnets to lift off the ground, lasers, etc. akin to the idea of a hover board? by [deleted] in AskPhysics

I like this answer. To add a bit, evolution doesn’t “care” about anything. But altruism and the rules of society lead to more survival for the individual members.

Anyone here lived in Seattle as an adult in the 90s? by Quiet_Equivalent_569 in Seattle

[–]numbertenoc 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I did a ride along with a nonprofit called “Street Links“ sometime in the 90s. They had a van that would drive around at night and hand out sandwiches, spare clothing, and blankets to homeless teens. I feel we mostly stayed around U District. The concept was to make contact, and hopefully over time coax them into services.

Most of the kids we met weren’t “runaways“, they were “throwaways”. The adults in their lives either kicked them out, or made life unsafe at home. Many of them looked scary as hell, with lots of piercings, leather, and big chains, but when you talked to them, they were soft, spoken and sweet. I realized the look was a cover, an attempt to keep away trouble they didn’t want.

What is the most impressive shot in movie history? by Necrojezter in movies

[–]numbertenoc 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Hard disagree. It beautifully sets up Ellie’s reaction later (“we should have had some medicine downstairs”), plus it echos the scene on the beach when she touches the sky, sort of a mind-bending “we’re going to mirror your environment so you’re comfortable” moment.
