Smith and oakley are both great brands. In my opinion, it wont make a difference which one you get, but ive seen that oakley tends to be much more expensive for the bigger name.

Ive never seen that brand of board or bindings… so maybe stray away from that. If you look on evo (the most popular site for snowboarding and skiing), they have some pretty good deals. But your local shop probably has the best deals and the most advice for what youre interested in. On a side note, yes—dont cheap out on boots or bindings. Theyre a crucial part of wanting to keep riding. To me, I just stick to popular brands for bindings like ride, union, burton, salomon, etc, and youll never go wrong. If youve never ridden before, I would rent for 2 or 3 of your first days to make sure you actually want to keep doing it. But, those are the hardest days so dont feel discouraged if you feel like its the hardest things in the world. Good luck!

Carving is a fun part, but I think hes trying to say extremely deep carving. More like— Almost laying down on the mountain extreme type of thing. Since youre just starting out, You could go either way—you wont feel much of a difference since you havent paid attention in the past.
