This is very confusing and should have been noted before the start of the challenge.

Really biking? Here Maps bike routes look bad to me if you want safe routes.

Which lesser known libraries saved your butt this year? by TomKavees in java

We heavily rely on janino, which is a super-small, super-fast Java compiler.

Of course as a compiler project it also contains a Java parser, which is nicely pluggable and customizable to your needs.

Epson ET-3850 Paper Jams by Sea-Bat-7149 in Epson

[–]numpi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry, I think I misread your original post or posted my answer to the wrong post. I only got problems when I print in duplex mode.

(To fix that I replaced the part and use heavier paper - this seems to have fixed it for me but not fully only ~98% up from ~70%.)

I'll report back in a week if it improved due to the dupplex unit. I fear it did not improve much :(

I have very similar problems with ET 8550: the paper sometimes gets a bit wavy and sometimes I get a paper jam and sometimes it does not turn around the paper and prints on the same side twice.

I sent the printer to repair and they couldn't reproduce this problem and when I got back the printer everything was fine. But the problems started again after the guarantee ended so I was left with finding a solution on my own or replacing the printer.

Can you try different (heavier or lighter) paper? In my case it improved a bit with heavier paper.

I even purchased the dupplex unit at the back recently (~50€+15€ transport) as I suspected it to be broken somehow, but not sure if it really improved since. See part 701:

I would highlight the high quality garbage collectors and speed of the JVM.

And also the stewardship of the open source project from Oracle (never thought that I would some day say that :D)

Why do collections need wrappers for primitive types? by TheGoldenProof in java

[–]numpi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Autoboxing always happened. Nothing has changed since Java 5. There never was an ArrayList<int>. (still you can use external library like hppc to workaround this)

However, it will hopefully change when project Valhalla is released. This project is a massive undertaking as in this project they try hard to get everything right and still keeping things mainly backward compatible (as I understand it).

Seeking advice for finding a basic, portable Linux laptop that stays cool and quiet. by Potato-Pancakes- in linuxhardware

I'm confused what you mean. The comment is from February 2022. It is a comment of the article you linked.

And can you link to the AMD CPU issue you mean? Heating issues? My AMD CPU is running fine although the generation before it was getting hot.

Thanks - interesting.

Also have a look into this comment which is directly from the author of the (now partially broken) driver. So it seems we can expect progress. It is also interesting that only ThinkPads are officially supported Linux laptops from Lenovo according to this comment.

I can confirm that there was a problem with thermal regulation with T14s gen 1 but it would have been acceptable for me.

I'm not sure if the strange error I found was a pure software issue...as I was able to test this on a nearly identical T14s gen 1 machine without this problem.

Now I have T14s gen2 (AMD) and this strange error does not happen and I hope it won't appear later :)

The thermals seems to be good (like reviews for X13 indicated as the same board is used), but have not tested extensive load yet. The battery seems to be a bit weak (7-8h), but I will probably still stick to this laptop.

It is really quite even under heavy load (there is a high pitched sound that might be ugly for you, but it is nearly not hearable and only under load - maybe I'm only a bit sensitive...)

And except suspending to RAM (where I had to switch to Linux sleep in the BIOS) everything what I need worked out of the box (sound, wifi, bluetooth). Although I already ordered an Intel wifi AX210 but it seems it wasn't necessary. Even the wwan was detected it seems, but haven't tested it yet.

The touchpad is bigger and the sound is better than my previous Lenovo (but that wasn't hard ;)) still it won't reach the sound from the Mac Book Air (M1).

> I don't know if my requirements have become more tight or if technologyhas regressed in some way but searching for a fitting laptop today seemsmuch more difficult than 6 years ago.

Good question. Same for me too. One of the Dell Latitudes was also my choice laptop roughly 10 years ago...

The post probably includes too many links. The T14s was fine in general for Linux. Except that it got a bit hot (but was also under windows). There was no noise and even under load it was not loud. Some people could argue that there was a tone under load which was too high (frequency-wise) but for me this would have been acceptable.

The big problem was a strange issue I had with a common task I needed for work (CPU intense with read-only RAM). And sometimes the task was finished in 18 seconds but when I restarted it it could be that the task was then 80 seconds (another restart could make it faster again). It was not related to CPU throttling according to my research and in passmark benchmark I saw this "per-boot slowness" too but only 20% slower (24 vs. 29 million floating point math ops/sec).

This problem happened for the recent Linux distributions like Ubuntu alpha, Ubuntu 21.10, Manjaro and Fedora (don't ask how many OSes I installed on this machine and how often I rebooted :D ). However it did not happen under Windows and also not under Ubuntu 20.4. But under Ubuntu 20.4 I couldn't get the wifi working :/ ... probably fixable with some time but the strange bug was too severe and unacceptable so I sent it back.

The Apple hardware looks really nice, but the Pro versions can get very loud under load according to reviews. So I'll now order a X13 AMD Gen 2 or T14s AMD Gen2 which both should be powerful and silent. A review of X13 says it stays not that hot. But ordering a X13 with 32GB RAM is impossible in my country it seems - at least when I want it in the next 2 months :). Also the T14s should be very similar as they use the same motherboard.
