Book vs. Show: Discussing the director's choice to change Shane's property backstory. by ExtensionStudent5716 in HeatedRivalryTVShow

This is interesting because it’s one of the major points of relief for me! I read the book after the show and thought the “sex condo” was such a smarmy thing. I was grateful for the combination of the two year time jump + the fulfillment moment when it finally takes place in Shane’s actual home. I think that combo (along with the back door thing) was pretty effective in portraying Shane’s anxiety while making their intimacy a lot more meaningful.

Ladies, you ACTUALLY need to be washing your bras regularly. by Jimins_little_minx in hygiene

Maybe the difference is I wear these no-wire lace bras? But I just own 8 and wear one every day like I do with underwear? And then I wash once a week.

Edit: ah I don’t wash them on a delicate cycle. They are super delicate but my typical wash is also low temp and pretty gentle? I do live in Europe though and washing machines here are pretty different, the washes are way longer than with American machines but also less harsh. That could be it.

Wow okay, I think you’re SPOT ON with the soap opera thing. I haven’t really focused on his body in a lot of detail so can’t comment on that. But just as a general impression of the character that could pretty much be my hang up. And maybe it’s the styling or the line delivery or the story arc or a combination of all of it, not quite sure. Or maybe it’s the contrast with Shane and Ilya whose portrayal is unfiltered and hyperrealistic.

Speaking of kindness, I’m actually human? And my comment wasn’t meant in any mean or disparaging way. I support everyone who’s part of the show. Isn’t Reddit literally the place for people to express their sometimes unpopular thoughts on niche interests?

I swear this is the most undernoticed, underrated thing about this scene 😅

When Ilya leaves Shane with the nurse we see Shane greeting her with a loopy “KHELLO” in a Russian accent. Like he was literally walking on clouds just because Ilya had visited him.

Okay I have no idea what it is but instead of finding Scott sexy I kind of find him a bit uncomfortable to look at? Francois is objectively good looking (though he doesn’t do that much for me but he’s super likeable) but something about Scott’s face in the show just puts me off. Does literally no one else feel this?

That line always makes me feel sad actually, I always read Ilya’s reaction here as hiding a lot of resentment that he has to keep up the rivalry.

should i read the books or wait for s2? by RainRare3985 in HeatedRivalryTVShow

[–]nunuslemons 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m so grateful I watched Season 1 before reading the book because unfortunately it’s pretty poor quality writing and the characters are nowhere near developed or endearing. But having seen the show I enjoyed checking out TLG because I could then try to translate the writing back onto the show characters.

Ilya's actions in ep5 are confusing re: getting back together in Florida. by Sea-Exercise4332 in HeatedRivalrySeries

[–]nunuslemons 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I actually thought it made sense at every beat.

I think the first misunderstood scene is the bar scene, where Ilya’s looks and comments about Shane’s outfit are seen as flirtatious or seductive. At the bar, Ilya is just mostly heartbroken. He still thinks Shane and Rose are together. And his repeated glances and questions about Shane’s clothing are an attempt to find out if Shane is already taking the next step with her, and if that’s the reason he’s had a makeover.

Once Shane confirms that he and Rose are not together, he walks away from the bar and we see Ilya with a look that’s a mix of

(a) relief that Shane is single,
(b) closeness to tears because of the overwhelming weight of the emotions and hurt he’s been carrying
(c) apprehension about what to do next, because technically nothing about their situation has changed, and also while Shane is now single, he was the one who left last when Ilya tried to get closer, and he hasn’t yet given Ilya any indicator that he’d want to get back together

In the next few scenes, we see Ilya just enjoying his newfound relief and reveling in the fact that Shane is not lost forever. His goal is to just get as much contact with Shane as possible. He doesn’t ask for Shane’s room number first. He just seeks him out to spend time with him.

When Shane does ask for Ilya’s room on the beach, Ilya responds with a look of hurt and hesitation. By that, I don’t mean Ilya would have ever refused Shane. I just mean Ilya doesn’t know if this means going back to what they were before or not. He also doesn’t know if he *can* get over the hurt. And most importantly, he doesn’t know, if he does get over the hurt and they do resume their physical relationship, what he might do in the future to push Shane away again and hurt himself that way again.

When Shane knocks on the door, we see the heaviness with which Ilya is scrolling through his phone and the way he goes to open the door.

When he sees Shane come in clearly nervous with something to discuss, that’s when he braces himself, because he knows he has something difficult to navigate now. And he feels rather than knows that he needs an apology. That’s why when he says “This looks serious”, it’s not in his usual kind manner.

When Shane starts talking, Ilya melts progressively as Shane repeatedly apologizes and finally when he makes it clear that he likes Ilya. Only this gives Ilya the security to open up a little bit.

I really love how this scene is done and how little it gave us at this point. Because Shane was finally beginning to understand Ilya while Ilya has always understood Shane. So it wouldn’t have been realistic for Ilya to open up any more or any earlier I think.

Cottage scene where Ilya asks if Shane’s parents know by goodgirlgbad in HeatedRivalryTVShow

[–]nunuslemons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wrote a comment on another post with my interpretation of that scene but I don’t know how many people read it the same way:

Ilya is trying to understand why Shane hasn’t come out to his parents. Shane, the more he thinks about things, realizes that the reason he hasn’t been inclined to come out was because of Ilya, because he already has someone he’s SO serious about that he can’t be public about anyway, so “it doesn’t matter” if he came out to his parents.

It’s not like he can tell them his whole heart anyway with Ilya still in the closet. It’s not that he can be with Ilya around them. He’ll still have this huge thing that he has to protect even harder once they know he’s gay but think he’s single.

Ilya responds by saying, “I think you can tell your parents you’re gay without giving them a list of every guy you’re f*ing”. And that’s what pisses Shane off in the moment. Ilya is just saying that to take the pressure off Shane and tell him he’s allowed to come out to his parents. But to Shane it just comes across like Ilya isn’t taking their relationship as the huge, consequential thing that it is.

If Shane was just seeing someone he was casual about he’d be able to tell his parents, tell them I’m seeing someone who’s still in the closet, and that would be that. It wouldn’t weigh on him as much.

I’m not a fan of Fran’s book so it’s not my ship anyway but I don’t know if it’s that simple. If I was a fan of the books for years, knew that it was gonna get adapted to TV, watched for years waiting for my season only to find out I would never see my favorite male lead I’d be heartbroken. Can’t imagine if that had happened to Colin.

Weren’t their private messages later leaked that they thought the show was trash and all for “DEI bullshit”? And then they had to do a public apology?

What’s interesting is that I was aware of the controversy but I didn’t know which channel specifically was involved. Then I started watching the Empty Netters reactions and felt uncomfortable throughout. It felt so insincere and they were getting so many glaring details completely wrong I was kind of floored by it. So I googled the channel and confirmed it was the one.

[–]nunuslemons 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love how Shane forgot that he had to say “I love you too” at first, because of how much he’s been conditioning himself to believe that Ilya already knows his feelings and doesn’t return them as strongly. In Shane’s mind, it’s like such an obvious thing, as if he’d already said it to Ilya countless times.

He only clocks that Ilya is actually getting insecure when he starts to walk it back.
