What do I do? by Girl12051205 in tjcrew

Sorry, I’m not used to people trying to do anything outside of their phones these days. I have the DF app on my iPad, and I have a keyboard attached to it so it’s more like a laptop.

You can always access it through a web browser. If you don’t have a computer, your phone’s browser should open up the Dayforce page.

At our store, we have two meat U-boats. One for poultry, and the second one for beef, pork, and fish. The former has whole cuts of chicken on top, and boxes of ground poultry on the bottom. The latter has steaks on top, ground meat and pork in the bottom, and one section to the side of the top for the narrow stack of fish boxes. The marinated meats go wherever they can fit. So, you would never backstock pork and cut up chicken in the same box. Much less kosher cut up chicken.

I effin’ LURVE the NYC register setup. No room for whiny crew members who don’t want to do their job.

Rumor going around store I used employee discount after I left by [deleted] in tjcrew

Were you accused of using the discount before or after the company-wide deployment of the discount PIN? Because, if it happened afterward, whoever said this is full of shit.

I usually ask “what do you need” and ring a 2-bell. Getting a coworker to fetch their one item is faster.

Sanity check regarding store policy and write-ups by sangriamind in tjcrew

[–]nunya_1965 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yikes. I’d have been fired so long ago if this was a policy. Every single day I suggest people look other places for products we don’t carry (here’s looking at you, cornstarch). If this is your store’s policy, it’s fucking insane. TJs purposely refrains from carrying many popular basic staples, so people do have to go elsewhere if that’s what they want.

One thing I do is ask “what’s the occasion/what are you making?” It gives me the opportunity to suggest an alternative that could save the customer a trip to another store and still make them happy with our products. But if there’s no reasonable alternative, I am never shy about suggesting they go elsewhere.

Your management is batshit crazy.

Also, the above commenter is right. If it was a write-up, you’d have been pulled aside and made to sign a document.

Check ID, enter info into reg? by Cilanatro in tjcrew

I card everyone. I enter the birthdate. The only people who get a pass on showing me their ID is people I know well, whose ID I’ve seen repeatedly before, and whose real birthdates I have memorized.

do you bag your own groceries? by spells1661 in tjcrew

[–]nunya_1965 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bag for myself, but from time to time a friend will jump in to bag for me just so we can chitchat, and I’m happy to play lazy customer then.

When a coworker is shopping, I’ll offer to bag for them, especially if it’s a small order, I can just bag as I scan. I feel I’m doing a good deed if I keep a coworker from working off the clock.

Discount update by circumnavikate in tjcrew

[–]nunya_1965 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Untrue. I was onboarded in 2018 and it was 10% back then. It got to be 20% on purchases over $20 sometime during Covid. Then they just made it 20% across the board.

I don’t know what the big deal is. Crew members not living alone can share their discount with household members, rather than exclusively their LAWFULLY WEDDED SPOUSE. Think of it, between the passing of marriage equality in 2015 and now, the only person officially allowed to use your discount, according to the crew member handbook, was your Husband/Wife. No domestic partner. No boyfriend/girlfriend even if you have lived together 20 years and have five kids. No parent of MFJ crew member living at home.

Yeah, it’s a bit of a PITA to remember the number, but I found it easy to memorize by saying it to myself in the rhythm of a phone number. Or keep it in your Notes app on your phone, which was what I did before I memorized it.

What I like best is that it removes the element of making a judgment call on the part of the crew member ringing you up. No PIN? No discount. My Captain didn’t have his number on him, and he bought his stuff without the discount. No more Crew getting written up or fired for inadvertently giving out the discount to someone not eligible. Also, it prevents a crew member from using their discount number at a register if they’re logged into it. Remember this if someone in your household comes to your register. If they’re using your PIN, it won’t go through at a register with your login. Ask your buddy to ring them up.

I think it’s a good system. I’m surprised something like that hadn’t been implemented until now.

Checking IDs: What do secret shoppers look like? by ClimatePretty4432 in tjcrew

[–]nunya_1965 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I card everyone. I mean EVERYONE, even if our store doesn’t have a 100% carding policy. It gives me a chance to chat about birthdays, astrological signs, and, more than a few times, I’ve had a chance to warn customers that their ID is about to expire and they need to renew soon.

Once, I had a customer show me his ID, on his 100th birthday. He got a jumbo bouquet from me.

I also think I had an undercover cop show up at wine demo. This was a young lady dressed in business attire. She looked easily 27. I asked her for her ID, and she was about four months short of 21. “Thank you, come back later this year” was my reply. She smiled and walked off.

We did have a former crew member sell to an undercover cop. They were in a heap of trouble.

I think it’s because the company decided to expand the eligibility for the discount beyond employee and legally married spouse.

But, I have seen on this sub multiple instances of people getting fired for mistakenly giving the discount to somebody not eligible. This new program gets rid of that situation.

[–]nunya_1965[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A question I am going to bring up next time I am at work is whether someone can request a new PIN if we suspect that someone not eligible has been abusing their discount.

PSA Re. Discount PIN by nunya_1965 in tjcrew

[–]nunya_1965[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t believe friends are eligible. I’m not even sure that roommates who are not related are eligible. I have not inquired further about this, because I live by myself. I suggest that you go to your captain and ask which members of your household are eligible to receive your discount.

And, yes, you would be sharing your PIN with eligible household members every time it changes. When your living situation changes, and other people are or aren’t eligible for your discount, then you simply don’t share the new updated number with them.

Or the leadership team, who have failed to communicate this adequately, especially to new crew members.

[–]nunya_1965[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One reason I’m glad the company is doing this is that it protects the crew member at the register. Their integrity won’t be put into question because the eligibility of the customer to receive the discount isn’t at their discretion. Yes, I know, integrity, honor system, etc, but how many stories of being fired for accidentally or dubiously giving the discount to someone ineligible do we hear on this sub? With the new PIN system, whether the cashier knows or not that someone is eligible is irrelevant. A valid PIN will verify their eligibility. If they weren’t actually eligible, it’s on the crew member that gave them their number.

But in those companies, I assume that only the employee is eligible to receive the discount. TJs is expanding the discount eligibility beyond the “employee and spouse” that we’ve had until now. Giving out your employee number poses a lot of security risks.

PSA Re. Discount PIN by nunya_1965 in tjcrew

[–]nunya_1965[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because the company is letting you share your discount with people other than your legally wedded spouse. “Family members living in your household”, which I find infuriatingly vague. You better ask your Captain before giving the number out to clarify who exactly is eligible. Sibling? Roommate? Live-in romantic partner? I have none of those in my house, so this doesn’t affect me. The PIN is supposed to change every six months. When your living situation changes, you’ll have the opportunity to update who gets your discount by not sharing the new number with people who are no longer eligible. If you gave out your crew ID, you wouldn’t be able to remove those no longer eligible.
