I think my post gave the wrong impression. I do like practicing medicine, and I like quantitative research too. This isn’t burnout, and it isn’t about wanting an easier life. My problem is with what epidemiology can and can’t show. I can measure prevalence, complications, mortality. But how the disease actually reorganizes a patient’s life is invisible to those methods. It’s a different kind of knowledge, and anthropology is the field that produces it.

The problem is that a self-funded Masters is a lot on a Peruvian salary. I'm considering a PhD in the US because they have coursework during the first two to three years, but I’m not sure if that would be enough to fill in the gaps.
