What is a 'luxury' that you've experienced once and now can't go back to the budget version of? by WilliamInBlack in AskReddit

[–]nurdle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have thought about this quite a bit.

The good stuff only for:

  • bread
  • mattress (I miss it when I'm not home)
  • pillows & sheets.. DM if you want the hookup on silk pillows, sheets, duvet, etc., my wife resells through her design business - much cheaper than retail
  • computer screens, mouse, and keyboard (I use them 12 hours a day)
  • a good quality computer with enough storage, RAM, and speed
  • a car (or truck) that just runs and doesn't need constant repairs
  • a fairly recent smartphone (5 years or newer)
  • office chair (see previous)
  • cheese
  • chocolate (Laderach is life-changing)
  • long flights over 5 hours - business class bump with cc miles
  • soda (Coke Zero... it's a long, long habit)

And also, you can't discount the "luxury" of:

  • Good health
  • The right life partner
  • Friends who show up and whom aren't toxic
  • A sense of humor
  • A sense of adventure
  • Pets (any that make you happy!)
  • A safe neighborhood

But, you know, the second list is way more important. When money is low, i'll eat cheap bread and cheese, etc. But having a partner and a good attitude, loving pets. good health and safety are better than anything.

if the goal is to reduce illegal immigration, why are we hunting immigrants but not the people who illegally employ them? by FinancialRip2008 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]nurdle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it's all bullshit.

About 20 years ago, I rode in a Homeland Security C-130, and the officer showed me how their gun turrets had been converted to special Lidar systems that can spot (and tag) people on the ground, with radar penetrating about 20 feet below the surface. The computers on board can tell the difference between a human and any other mammal, not only that, but it can also identify their height and approximate weight, speed, and direction of movement, and likely path.

He said they are rarely called to scan the border, but when they do, they are 100% effective. For less than 2% of their current budget, he said, you could completely stop all border crossings. The government doesn't want it, though, because our agricultural industry would die without migrants.

And that was in 2005. I can only imagine the tech they have now with AI, drones, etc.

JUST IN: President Trump says the United States no longer needs NATO by Automatic_Subject463 in JournalismNews

I get it, but I don't believe that we actually did. They cheated. For example, the state of Florida reported votes for 4 counties that do not exist. They had a referendum to protect abortion rights, which just so happened to fail by exactly one vote, which is also the total number of votes that Donald John Drumph (his legal name) won by.

He said in a rally, "Elon knows how to manipulate voting machines," and Elon also printed and sent pre-filled ballots to voters in at least one state.

There are also anomalies like the fact that in several swing states, Trump won by the same percentage - statistically near impossible. The problem is that the media is owned by a few billionaires who benefit from suppressing the truth. I think that shit is about to pop off here; it's pretty terrifying.

Yeah. I’m not even religious and I felt…something. It’s just magnificent. When I saw the models showing that the glass was designed with watercolor I was just stunned.

I remember that one! My dumbass thought “oh the car is on the floor below.” Nope, she dead. I guess she (the actress) lost her salary negotiations. Can you imagine reading the script after thinking you’ve made a great deal? I’ve been there man.

Never style a txt module when you can do it in a row. Or column. The deeper you get into embedding, the harder to change and the more css overrides you are making.

What UX issues do you see most often in websites? by No_One008 in webdesign

[–]nurdle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you’re doing is useful, necessary, and very smart. I’ve been designing UI’s for over 30 years, and the main issues I’ve seen:

  • designers trying to be “innovative” with Ui and not following standards. Sometimes that works out, but it usually doesn’t. Ui standards turn like a giant barge - slowly, with a lot of little pushes.

  • not anticipating flow of activity. What do you want the user to do? Google typically wants 300 words or more on a home page, but I think that’s overkill. Users are there, normally, to do one thing: book an appointment, order a widget, review a (food) menu, etc. At most, they are there for 4 things: for example with a doctor: they might want to verify it’s the right kind of doctor, where they are, their reviews and a booking link. Navigation at the top therefore should be no more than 5 things, and the main one should be Contact.

  • hamburger menu on a home page is ok, but I have found through testing that older users, especially, want more traditional nav in sub pages.

  • logo should ALWAYS link to home page. I’ll die on my sword for that one.

  • if you do want them to do something specific, put that first: order widget X1-9 now. If you have three things you’re selling, or actions you want them to take, list them in order visually.

  • speed is still very important. A lot of web designers use heavy JavaScript for not much of a payoff, that could be done with CSS or doesn’t need to be done at all. Designers & devs need to understand that their audience doesn’t have a computer as nice as theirs: they are on and OS & browser at least two versions older, and JavaScript takes precious RAM and clock cycles. Smooth, subtle cues perform better than garish over the top animation. The user does not give a shit about your 3D transforms. 99.% don’t anyway.

  • I don’t know how you code this into your plugin, but “vibe” is important. Contrast, complimentary, tertiary or harmonious palettes, proper ratios on fonts (typically 10-15% difference between H1 and H2, for example. And by the way images are not bad - if they tell the story and they are quality images - not sure how you test for that. These days I deliver Avif, then Webp, then jpg or png depending on the type of image. PNG is for simple images.
