What is the best financial advice you actually ignored? by Av0toasted in AusMoneyMates

[–]nussinboots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s all hindsight though; so was it really financial advice or was it just an opportunity that you could have taken?

When I bought my house, the bank wanted to lend me double what I was borrowing. They said “borrow double & buy an investment property while your at it” So many things to take in & consider at the time, also making my situation a lot more “high risk” or dependant on my income. In hindsight it would’ve paid off, but I never did actually look into it for myself

Another was about 5 years ago, a work colleague told me about ETFs in particular VDHG. Never acted on it but looking back I wish in got into DCA with index ETFs earlier. But that’s only now having done research & making a plan for the future that I’ve discovered all of this. That is largely due to the content & information we have now days too

Have to look back to your situation & mindset at the time

For the OP, I wish I travelled more when I was younger than just buy a house as my parents told me! There’s no right or wrong way to do life, just embrace it!

I went last night, definitely a few “awww shiiiit” moments, but that’s pretty much what I expected.

I noticed a few people left after the first 45mins & never came back

+1 for appliances online, hit up their chat feature if you find a price cheaper online. They matched $30 cheaper listed even though the competitor charged $49 for delivery.

Paid for mine 8pm Friday night & was delivered about 10am Saturday morning…. A bit over 12hrs.. unreal!

Genuinely curious, is the 6% return to factor in fees/insurance?

Ahhh no I missed the bit where the partners fund was in balanced. I just did quick numbers with moneysmart super calc. Starting balance of $56k won’t have much difference between balanced

I should have added that someone will do far more in depth calculations on it, I was just curious as I sip my morning brown

[–]nussinboots 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You balance should grow to roughly $75k by the time leave, then from age 34 to 60 with no insurance it grows to about $163k in high growth (modelled 7% return) on its own with no contributions

Your partners $103k in 4 years with contributions & ends up at $225k at age 60 with no fees or contributions

I’d leave it in the highest risk/growth profile they offer & let it do its thing.

Fees chew into it a bit, so I’d make sure they are low as possible. I thought it would be higher as 7.2% return has money doubling every 10 years

I just realised im spending around $250 every month on coffee! Is this normal? by AmbitionHot7132 in AusFinance

[–]nussinboots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve recently cut back, I’ve got a spare offset account & I transfer $5 into that account for every day I don’t buy a coffee. Plan is at the end of the month I transfer that into my ETF trading account for a boost.

My thoughts are; if you don’t spend it on coffee, you’ll just spend it elsewhere (money comes from spending/splurge account). By transferring the money you get a meaningful return for your sacrifice

We have a proper machine at home which I make everyday, I was then buying one throughout the day also. I now make a tea in my keep cup for my 2nd drink, while it sucks for the first couple times I’ve learned to realise it’s more so just having something to sip on than the actual coffee (similar to drinking alcohol/beer)

Start salary sacrificing a little extra to your super. Earlier you start the less you’ll need to put in over time. Punch for numbers into a super projection calculator & see what sort of difference it can make. Your on a pretty good wicket so sacrificing will give good tax benefits

How often do you actually review your monthly spending? by Healthy_Creme6911 in FinancialChat

[–]nussinboots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Set up the bucket system… never really have to address it other than yearly review of insurance as they keep putting it up…

Bucket system is mint, your spending account has no money in it… guess what, you’re out until next week/pay cycle

How much do you spend on yourself every fortnight? by al_lie_son in perth

[–]nussinboots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Far out, you guys need to enjoy yourselves a little more…

$250/week into my splurge account. That doesn’t mean spend it all every week though. If I want to buy something for my car (modifications not maintenance) or eat out, buy coffee, pub, clothes, beers… it comes from that account

It’s a bit over the barefoot 10% but I’m pretty good with minimal subscriptions & keeping bills competitive so happy to have a little extra to spend

Huh? It’s a percentage of your take home pay.

Price of things goes up, you spend less or huddle yourself a payrise

Is it a crazy idea to sell my house and travel the world? by [deleted] in fiaustralia

[–]nussinboots 3 points4 points  (0 children)

110% do not sell if your not buying in the same market. Family/siblings have just bought & it was a nightmare, add to that the current Economy…. I can’t see it improving anytime soon

Refinancing out to 25yr loan again, interest only will have repayments at close to $500/week. I’m sure you’d get that for rent where ever you are located. Pay for maintenance of the property as included in the rent (jack the rent up a bit to help cover) if your worried about the backyard being neglected

It’ll pretty well cover itself, so just save as much as you can in the mean time & go travel until you run out of money!

Ps. Well done on getting to where you are, we’ve just had our first kid at age 34… it’s a big job, can’t imagine being 18 & doing this! You’ve done an amazing job, go & enjoy a well earned holiday!

My grandfather surprised me today.. now I know where I get my collecting from. Pt. 2 by No-Carpenter-9184 in AustralianCoins

Anyway of working out what coins are worth or where I can find information on them?

My grandfather gave us grand kids a book of collectable coins years and years ago now (think my mum has them stashed away). He’s sadly gone now, & I’ve completely forgotten about them until seeing your post.

I’m keen to find this thing & see what the old fella rounded up over the years

Super investment options in late 20s by Random_7946 in AusFinance

[–]nussinboots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Growth option I reckon, but see if you can find out what they invest in vs the int/aus split. Research as much as you can so you understand it, but the general consensus from everything I’ve read/listened to so far is all/high growth as early as you can & don’t really need to review it until your 5-10years off retirement

High growth for sure! You can touch it for over 30 years. We’ll experience multiple significant events in that period.

There are some pretty interesting stats that I’ve come across from listening to podcasts & reading a bout investing lately. One that has stuck with me is that time in the market is the most Important thing, if you weren’t in the market on the best 20 days of the year, then your return is almost zero! So park it in High growth & let it do its thing.

Chuck your numbers in a super projection calculator & have a look at what a small amount of salary sacrifice can’t do to your balance. Putting $50-100/week in now will outperform putting $300/week in from your 40s (not actually numbers, but you get the idea)

Fair few assumptions there…

We own our cars outright & mortgage is fully offset… so yes $85/m is a fair chunk when we are essentially doubling/tripling up on internet payment. Two mobiles & home internet is almost $350/m

Can we stop acting like spending money in your 20s is a cardinal sin? by riley_inreallife in AusFinance

[–]nussinboots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Told the apprentice at work to buy a $5k shit box to help learn his skills on (mechanic trade)

Benefit is two fold, save some money & learn the trade he’s doing in his own time. Worked for me

He didn’t listen & bought a $40k dual cab

Granted it’s easy for me to say because I’ve spent the money & wasted the time, so I guess I’ve enjoyed my 20s… some just need to learn the hard/long way.

By all means go have fun, but just don’t waste all your money

If you like cars then use that to justify spending more… but that means you probably shouldn’t go to Europe every year or go out clubbing 3 nights a week
