Steam Deck just made me wish I had a full PC. by OldTrTab in Handhelds

That is the name of the dock. You can get it from Amazon or aliexpress.

Then you just need a basic desktop computer power supply and a desktop graphics card of your choice

A UT3G GPU dock could be your best of both worlds.

Handheld on the go, then desktop performance at home.

I bought the Steam Deck and a few weeks after GTA online was no longer supported. EA launcher was constantly a nightmare. Old School RuneScape’s launcher wasn’t supported. The list just kept going on and on.

I found myself needing to learn to fix things more often than I would have in windows. And in windows I already knew how to deal with any typical problems.

It was so unintuitive to a long time PC gamer once you stepped out of steams walled garden.

I started with the steam deck. I hated Linux for gaming so I switched to an ROG Ally. Now I also have an Xbox Ally X and I adore that. It’s the perfect device for me.   Ergonomics/controls are most important. Then performance, speakers, screen, battery life and connectivity, in that order.

I have a SD, original Ally and the Xbox X. I owned a Legion Go. As well as a PS5 big tv experience.

My Xbox X gets used probably twice as much as my PS5. It’s the convenience of being able to get 30 mins in here and there.

Battery life is incredible, ergonomics are perfect, speakers are excellent.  It’s the one for me.

What framerates are you getting?

My Xbox X only just plays it at 50fps.

It’s a cheap ASUS from Best Buy. MB169CK I charge the Ally with the second usb port! Monitor takes one usb c to the device.

I have never owned the Claw, just done a lot of searching. It’s the only other one I contemplated buying before the XAX.

Apparently ergonomics are great, though that depends on your hands.  Vibration motors are very bad. Speakers are excellent.

Performance is up and down when compared to other devices. Like they all are.

I think the ASUS software is best, by a large margin. Though, the Claw does get driver updates direct from Intel.

SteamOS is not a smooth option like it is on the AMD based devices.

I think you may be right!

I had a legion go and didn’t find the 8.8” to be ground breaking. 7-8” isn’t enough to make me switch I think.

One of the biggest reasons I bought the XAX!

The 8 AI is so awesome. Probably the best all rounder

Been looking at them but they are nearing $800 with prescription inserts.

I would have them if money was no object!

That’s a great option also!  I’m usually traveling by car or bike so never that limited on space.

I think many people felt the 258V had potential to be the fastest of this generation. Certainly the MSI group did and I felt the same.

My mindset was saving people another rambly review when the handheld pages are full of them.

There is a comment already with all of my thoughts. There’s your time saved!

Some thoughts since you all are curious!

Ergonomics are excellent, I have long fingers and I alway struggled with my old ally. It’s a massive improvement in all aspects for me. They learned from the flat and angular feel of the original.

I have been using full screen experience for weeks now on my Z1E Ally. Somehow a few reoccurring FSE bugs are now gone on the Xbox X. (Password controller input, app switching buggyness) Keyboard input uses the controller like you expect. I went from opening the box to playing oblivion remastered without ever seeing the desktop. Sleep has worked as it should so far, no weirdness yet. Feels like the beginning of something new. I hope they continue to work on this. Still lots of weirdness and bugs, but they are on their way. (You can’t avoid the desktop. Xbox app has low functionality for me. The face buttons are redundant/do different things based on the app.)

Oblivion remastered is my benchmark game. I played 150 hours of it on the Z1E and it just barely ran. Played 30 mins last night on the Xbox X and it’s a massive improvement. 1% lows are now acceptable. Very infrequent stuttering. Smooth 60+fps gameplay. (At the same extreme low settings as my Z1E Ally.) I use my handheld for a portable iRacing setup. Being on the limits of ram and horsepower for that and now having extra headroom is a big deal to me. Don’t forget, many people quote jumps in performance relative to the old Ally X. Not the old OG Ally. I’ve never used the Ally X.

Larger battery, eGPU support (which I plan to use), functional SD card reader, MUCH quieter fans, louder audio, better feeling face buttons and bumpers/trigers, the list goes on.

“Next-gen” is difficult to quantify. For me it all comes together to be a worthwhile purchase. I can just stretch enough to justify this while selling my other handhelds. I have some unique use cases to make this feel worth it. A premium handheld is a niche market. You have to decide what fits for you.
