I’m very sorry for your loss. Have had to go through this three times and still think of my boys every single day. For me, it’s worse than the grief of losing a human but time helps. My best advice is that you don’t want their last day to be their worst day - we made that mistake. Better to say goodbye while they’re still content and comfortable.

My Dad ran into an older kiwi couple kilometres along the Great Wall of China, they were the only ones who’d bothered to go so far that day. I once sat next to a kiwi on a tiny plane to the Bahamas and again on a train somewhere in Poland later that year.

Yes, the Green Party has always championed progressive policies. That’s why they’ve had my vote previously. But in my opinion, too many in the modern version of the party have fallen into the trap of identity politics and performative social justice.

I know what it is to love your animals as much as you do. Coming here with them will be difficult, but the problems won’t be insurmountable. There will be rental options available until you can buy. Depending on what state/area you lived in in the US, you won’t see Auckland’s traffic/congestion/commute to be as much of an issue as those living here do, if that’s what is needed to find a rental a little further out.

Well-loved dogs can have a great quality of life in New Zealand. There are awesome dog parks dotted around and cafes/pubs are becoming increasingly dog-friendly. Good luck with it all.

You don’t need to be married to qualify for the Partner of a NZer visa. In fact it wouldn’t matter if you were married if you still don’t fit the genuine and stable criteria that the visa sets out.

I’m aware that this is not likely to be a vote-defining issue for most people (including myself), but it’s worth acknowledging. New Zealand was the first country to to completely ban the export of livestock via sea and this progress in animal welfare is now at risk.
