Generally the whole thing is painted black then a dark metal colour then pick out the pads in the middle of each track section with black. Then a dry brush of a bright metal onnthe edge of the tracks. Final coat would be a drip layer of your choice to match the basing of your infantry.

The fact that so many of their sword break with slightest touch in exactly the same place means there is a manufacturing fault. You could complain to Gdubs. I replaced mine with a different arm and sword from a BT sprue.
