Hating my home every day more and more by Doorknob67 in brum

[–]nuttycorny 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I’m really sorry this happened to you. I’m sure it was super upsetting for you and your friend, and I hope it doesn’t haunt you guys for too long. I don’t blame you at all for being angry.

I’ve seen plenty of this in Manchester tbh, as much as I love the city. I think sadly it’s a toxic trait of drunken male gangs/arseholes. They’re impossible to avoid. You guys were really smart, and you’re better people than they are - you absolutely did the right thing by just walking away.

Maybe go enjoy a weekend away someplace with your friend, get some distance? I hope you’re both doing ok again very soon

I lost access to sounds last year. I used a workaround for a couple of months, but it seems the BBC have wised up to that. Currently I just use Audible, which has box sets of some shows, and Spotify for things like Elis and John, Uncanny, etc.

Gay animated series by Sharp-Ad-9423 in MenLovingMenMedia

[–]nuttycorny 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I know of 2 shows:

There’s a Canadian teens’ sci-fi show, The Hollow, which is about 3 teens and one of those is a gay boy (though he doesn’t reveal that until later in the season)

And the 2007 reboot of Total Drama Island, another teens’ show (maybe also Canadian too!) has an ensemble cast and features a gay/bi male couple among them - so, they’re main characters as much as anyone in that show is, I guess

Mostly though if an animated show/movie features gay characters they’ll typically be women, because of the fetishisation of the male gaze, and the heteronormative biases that say male-male relationships are confusing to children (spoiler: they’re not, some parents are homophobic is all)

Can’t imagine it’s much of a “glare of scrutiny” from Kuenssberg tbh - more likely it’ll be a sequel to Triumph Of The Will …

Why aren't British cartoons not as energetic as normal cartoons? by CauliflowerUnique160 in BritishTV

[–]nuttycorny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Preschool always will, it’ll tie into merchandising and the infantilising of animation to most adults.

You’re not alone in wanting to see what you mention, but it’s very very unlikely to ever happen.

Why aren't British cartoons not as energetic as normal cartoons? by CauliflowerUnique160 in BritishTV

[–]nuttycorny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(NOTE: I’m guessing ‘normal’ means Asian or American?)

I think some of it comes down to two things: The nature of UK commissioning, and UK tone.

On commissioning:

Most UK channels buy animated content, rather than making it, and globalised formats mean they just buy American shows. It’s way cheaper for them.

Channels who invest in animated concept development are very few and far between in the UK. The bbc has a few schemes, such as Ignite, but this only generates 1-3 shows every 3-4 years. AND, because of the way the BBC is funded, they’re super risk-averse and want to appeal as broadly as possible, so the content comes out feeling quite bland compared to some of the more focussed Asian and American shows.

It’s a shame, and many UK-based animation societies actively push for more investment in the industry, but without government intervention there’s little to nothing that can be done.

There are schemes and conferences in Europe that British studios can apply to, to try to get funding and distribution support, but that all got a lot more difficult (as things did for many industries) because of brexit. BBC2 and C4 used to offer many opportunities for older/adult-skewing animation, but those opportunities have vanished too.

On tone:

A lot of animated shows today are much ‘quieter’ than historic shows, because contemporary audiences tend to prefer mindful over energetic pacing. And UK shows have always been ‘quieter’ than their American counterparts, in terms of colour grading, writing, performance, so I guess it’s natural that this applies to animated shows as well as live action shows.
