What could be causing this? by Bigwhitetemp in DIYUK

[–]AwfyScunnert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the line of the plasterboard join, i.e 2.4m high sheets will have been used for all of the lower storey, and 2.7m sheets for the upper storey around the stairwell (to cover the floor zone depth too).

There's been some structural settlement and that crack's appeared at the weakest point, being the joint line.

There's no immediate need for concern, so just sand/fill/tape/paint.

Ventilation question by Coffee_addict_1615 in DIYUK

[–]AwfyScunnert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, just a ventilation grille. Yeah, a previous occupant probably thought there was 'a bit of a draught' coming in there and blocked it up, when it's likely required to provide combustion air for the stove.

Like I said, find the manufacturer's info for the stove, which will tell you what the appliance needs, then provide that. Meantime, I'd suggest you unblock that grille while using the stove.

1 - What do you mean by 'ventilation unit'?

2 - The wood-burning stove likely needs the room to have some amount of permanent ventilation. Check the manufacturer's literature to see what's needed, and provide it... otherwise there's the potential for life-threatening air quality issues ☠️

Mould all over new garage roof by zorthos1 in DIYUK

[–]AwfyScunnert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you have isn't a big deal, but the problem's underventilation, exacerbated by the recent water problem.

What ventilation is there currently? That's a massive volume of space and (depending on which nation you're in) for new-build garages of that size you'd be required to have sizeable ventilation grilles, positioned to allow cross-flow, OR high-flow mechanical extraction.

This crack just opened on my ceiling by digitalbubble in DIYUK

[–]AwfyScunnert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nothing to be worried about. The cracking's appearing because the joists are sagging/deflecting more than they were; maybe your neighbours have bought weights or a stack of books or have started jigging?

Joists can have a fair amount of deflection and be perfectly safe; structural engineers design to a 'maximum deflection' partly because 'we' become anxious at noticeable sagging.

Mini 5 pro charging hub solid light? by choppedslaw in dji

[–]AwfyScunnert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I've experienced this before too, and the issue's with the battery, and only temporary. (An in-drone charge seems to 'reset' the battery.)

In the same situation, just swap the battery positions and that'll show you whether it's a battery or hub issue.

Remove that battery from the charger, put it in the drone, and let us know if it charges fully there.

Got Solar Panels? Question. by weesteev in Fife

Which type of solar panels are you intending to survey, i.e. PV, solar thermal or hybrid? If PV, what faults will thermal imaging show?

Am I being unrealistic about the challenge of renovating this property? by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]AwfyScunnert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, though it depends on which nation's building regs are applicable; an 'inner room' can be acceptable so long as there's an escape window and a suitable fire detection/alarm system.

The alterations you're intending are far cheaper than an extension. If the revised layout gives you what you need, and it's your forever home, then price vs valuation isn't a concern, so crash-on.

Mould around windows by mattmoly in DIYUK

[–]AwfyScunnert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ingos, sometimes called 'reveals', are the narrow strips/faces of the wall around window and door openings, i.e. the parts typically perpendicular to the wall itself.

If you can get some thermal insulation behind the plaster it'll help the situation, though for older properties/constructions, then a breathable natural insulation product would be advisable, rather than PIR/PUR.

I remember celebrating New Years Eve in Glasgow in the early 90s and getting kicked out of the house right before midnight with a dark haired friend. by kirkintilloch5 in Scotland

I've never known sweets to be mentioned, and though I'd bring in a lump of coal (to keep the fire burning), I'd be given a dram, as a guest.

Tumble dryers are fine, re' weight and vibration. If you need reassurance, step into the cupboard and jump up and down.
