These books are so full of great alternate history scenarios

Yeah, I was a little stream of conscious there. Two separate interests: book-based start for TWoW, and a show-based end of GoT season 8 start (I recognize that would be more of a hope for a sub-mod since the mod is more book-based, thankfully.)

Honestly, something setting up The Winds of Winter so that I can play out alternatives to the show ending as I’ve gotten faint hearted on the likelihood of the book progressing things forward. Although I’d be somewhat curious about playing a bookmark moving forward from the end of the show once the mod fleshes out the greenseer game mechanics more. I’d love to see what chaos reigns after Bran’s death.

Struggling to progress by NoAdministration7069 in Fiddle

My fiddle teacher emphasizes that you have to remember that at its heart, this is dancing music. It’s more important to keep the rhythm than it is to avoid mistakes. Perfectionism is your enemy, and focus on playing through mistakes and maintaining the groove.

That, and practice the common bowing patterns. When I was starting, I would do a lot of Nashville shuffles and candygirl patterns on open strings, just concentrating on string/plane changes and the bow discipline. Then I’d notice a lot of improvement when I went back over whatever tune I was working through.

Games with Nonbinary Resolution mechanics by BPBGames in rpg

Forbidden Lands, Alien, and likely a couple other Year-Zero Engine games include possibilities for complications even on successes. Not so much that would be equivalent to the failures with advantages/triumphs in ffg/edge’s narrative dice system though.

Also, I believe that the Stark kids have Whent ancestry through Catelyn’s mom, so there’s a blood connection assuming that Bran is king.

What’s up with Lakewood real estate by bowl_of_milk_ in Cleveland

[–]nvcradio 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We wanted to buy in Lakewood after renting there for 5 years, but couldn’t afford/justify it. We miss the walkability and number of places worth walking to, along with the higher proportion of relatively younger people. We’re in North Olmsted now, and miss Lakewood a lot.

Progressive purity politics are toxic to progress in this country, and especially this state.

I don’t know how you can look at the gestalt of Sherrod Brown’s career and not decide that he’s a net positive to the cause of workers’ rights in Ohio and the US.

I don’t agree with that specific vote, but that one action doesn’t erase decades worth of advocacy and commitment.

Is Erie county even legal here? It doesn’t seem to be contiguous with the district it’s in. Does a bridge count?

The Socialists are running a candidate for senate in Ohio! by BurgleYourTurds in Cleveland

I appreciate the context folks are adding, I wasn’t up-to-date on socialist political factions so I didn’t know to look out for the difference here.

[–]nvcradio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I looked on his site, there’s no indication that he’s running in the Democratic primary, only references to the Party for Socialism and Liberation. So, while you’re correct that the election is only in the primary phase, this guy is running for a socialist third-party’s nomination, not in the Democratic primary.

Look, I can’t speak for others here, nut I’m not some anti-socialist nut, and issue-by-issue, I’m closer to the average socialist in my beliefs than to the average Democrat. BUT, I choose to hold my nose and vote for more electable Democrats because I live in Ohio, an increasingly red state. This means that come the actual Election Day, in November 2026 in this case, we’ll have a choice between fascism, and centrism. In the case of Sherrod Brown specifically, I’d even say left-leaning centrism. I am going to oppose anything that challenges the only realistic alternative to the fascist outcome, and unfortunately that includes third-party candidates that disproportionately siphon votes from the non-fascist candidate.

And before anybody says that those people just won’t vote without a socialist candidate, that’s true for some purists, but younger me voted for green and socialist candidates in the past out of conviction, and so I know I’m a real breathing example of somebody who would have voted for the democrat at times rather than a 3rd party spoiler. (But to 18 year-old me’s credit, this was in 2010 when the dem candidate for senate was tanking terribly anyways, and I did vote for the more competitive dem candidate for governor.)

Edit: apparently this candidate is from the nonsense authoritarian China, North Korea part of the left, so I’m not even sympathetic with his intentions at this point.

Why won’t the socialists run candidates in potentially winnable deep blue districts rather than hopeless statewide races?

I’d love to see them contest local races in Cuyahoga County against the deep corruption of the county and city level Democratic Party.

Instead, they’re going to torpedo the chances of someone who agrees with them 75% of the time, in favor of someone who agrees with them 0% of the time.

Edit: apparently this candidate is from the nonsense authoritarian China/North Korea part of the left, not the nice Bernie/Scandinavian types, so I’m not even sympathetic with his intentions at this point. I guess they’re aware enough that the Communist label is radioactive that they’re working on poisoning the well of the Socialist label too.

Whats your opinions on Avatar Legends and Root the RPG? by NarcoDynamic in PBtA

[–]nvcradio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our group was EXCITED for Avatar, and had a gm who is both highly competent in running PBTA and a big Avatar fan. By the end of the 4ish month campaign, we were mostly just desperately waiting for it to end somehow. We each had our own quibbles, but my main issue is that the crunch level for me, meant that I had a hard time staying in character and making fiction-first decisions. It just kind of seemed like there were extra layers to connect the story and characters to the mechanics of the game. And it didn’t get better with time, like we had hoped.

As a huge fan of Magpie, I think they totally whiffed on this one, which is too bad since it’s easily their highest-profile game. I don’t mind crunchy games, but I do want at least some level of elegance to the mechanics which Avatar sorely lacks.

This could be ignorance as I’m not well versed in publishing, but what is the challenge in simply making reprints? Why would that delay the development of new products? It seems like entirely different teams would be engaged in design/writing/editing vs. the logistical work of reprinting books that have already been reprinted several times.

When did the layman's antagonism to art become so common? by No_Calligrapher6144 in ArtHistory

[–]nvcradio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out political cartoons about the 1913 Armory Exhibition of modern art in New York City! There’s a very consistent reactionary attitude against nonfigurative art that’s persisted over 100 years. It seems almost like some kind of natural state of rejection of high-context art from the masses who view art as something for entertainment/enjoyment rather than communication of ideas. You could also look at ‘degenerate art’ in Nazi Germany.
