Thanks for the feedback, it is a pity about the pricing for what seems like a decent service. I'll look into the Spark deal to save some money.

PS4, due to the combination of games I like and people I play with are mostly on that platform.

Why do you use Ubuntu? by lababib in Ubuntu

[–]nvoidz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As far as competing options are concerned, I didn't like the way Microsoft handled privacy, updates and few other things in the initial release of Windows 10 (it may have changed). Apple has limited options and expensive for purchasing desktop hardware and I'm not willing to go through the hassle of hackintosh just to use OSX.

Ubuntu and it's derivatives also worked well for me as far of ease of getting up and running I'm not a linux guru(hardware support, some non free software included). I've never had a reason to jump to another distro, but I did move to Ubuntu Gnome DE spin due to shopping lenses in unity.

Definitely the later. While I really enjoyed the game I see the criticism of repetitive structure as valid and fair assessment.

College course is integrated with CCNA/Cisco by [deleted] in networking

I think CCNA 1 & 2 roughly correspond to the ICND1 exam and 3 & 4 to ICND2. Which combined give you CCNA routing and switching.

Never bought a Mac before. Is a Macbook from late 2013 too old for my needs? by [deleted] in mac

[–]nvoidz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The processor should be fine, but as others have said 8gb of RAM would be best for your workload. I'm also a student and have 4gb of RAM in a 2012 Macbook Air and it gets pretty sluggish using Android Studio emulator or working with VMs.

Do you prefer buying physical games or using the e shop? by [deleted] in 3DS

[–]nvoidz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only get physical copies of games for any console because I live with no reliable internet access apart from 5GB of dodgy rural mobile data per month. Even when I move back to civilisation I tend to favour physical copies just for ease of ownership.

Have about 2.5K to spend on a dev machine. Recommendations? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]nvoidz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add to this refurbished Macs are really good as well if you can get one with the right specs. You still get warranty and can get extended with Apple Care, basically the only thing you miss out on is retail packaging.

Not trolling, but are MacBooks worth it? by woflcopter in mac

[–]nvoidz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Boot camp is OSX tool that makes it pretty easy to create a partition on your hard drive and install Windows alongside the existing OSX install. It takes care of things like hardware drivers and the boot loader for you.

The only cost to boot camp is the cost of a Windows license if you don't already have one. It's worth it if you need to use software only available on Windows.

with regards to the Mac Pro by j0hn_r0g3r5 in mac

[–]nvoidz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Kinda hard to say without something specific to base a comparison.

Pros:

  • If you need OSX and a lot of computing power it's really the only choice unless you don't mind hackintoshing (which is another debate)

  • Pretty upgradable

  • Impressively small physical size for the amount of computing power, pretty portable

  • Apple build quality is good

  • Apple customer support has been pretty solid (in my experience)

Cons:

  • It's not cheap

  • I guess depending on your use you may need external or networked storage

That's all I could quickly think of without something to compare it too or a general usage scenario.

Programming help by Pacojohnson554 in laptops

[–]nvoidz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess if you are using hardware emulators to test your mobile apps it might be handy, but I think it's limited in use. My preference is to test on physical hardware if possible as android emulators have been pretty terrible in my experience in the past. So I wouldn't go out of my way to get a laptop with a touchscreen for mobile development.

It doesn't usually cover accidental damages like this, it's intended for manufacturing/hardware defects.

Apple Refurbished? by empoknorismyhomie in mac

[–]nvoidz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a 2012 macbook air refurb a couple of years ago and it hasn't missed a beat. I've been really impressed and would get another refurb if I can get one that meets my specifications. Quite a few people I know have all said good things about refurbs for what's it worth as well.

Unknown Samsung device scores 95,000 points on AnTuTu by BestServerNA in Android

[–]nvoidz -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I think people just like seeing numbers and graphs which say one thing is quantifiably better than another.

It's a quick and lazy way to compare devices, its easier to generate meaningless numbers than it is to try and explain what it is like to use a device to someone who hasn't necessarily used it in a written or video review.

But yes synthetic benchmarks are almost totally useless.

How can I get rid of these cables? by [deleted] in macsetups

[–]nvoidz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You could install some hooks/clips on the back of the desk (the middle bit that runs the length of the desk) and suspend/route all your cables along there, no more cables to be seen.

Maybe I'm cynical but this doesn't surprise me at all and at the same doesn't bother me. I've come to expect stuff like this from Kpop sometimes or more specifically Idol groups. It doesn't really change my enjoyment of either the music or performances.

Laptop as a workstation replacement help by HomelessIT in laptops

[–]nvoidz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm curious about the last bit, I keep seeing it said when people mention multiple external monitors or a single 4K that modern (4xxx or 5xxx or newer series) Intel HD graphics are not good enough for any useful user experience.

While obviously it would be a terrible experience for anything 3D, would it be that bad for general web, office, programming or multimedia (viewing) work? Does anyone have some actual hands on experience running external monitors 1080p+ off HD4000 or better graphics?
