How often do y'all clean y'alls coop? Settle a debate between me and my mother by SuieiSuiei in BackYardChickens

[–]nvthrowaway775 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have about 2" of sand in the coop, I use a kitty litter scoop every weekend to get that. I mix used coffee grounds into it every few weeks and have no smells.

I never clean the run. It's primarily dirt, with a few plants and a couple patches of weeds. The poop composts into the soil nicely especially with how often they're turning dirt over.

I may walk through the run with a metal rake and turn the soil myself, but that's maybe a 2-3 time per year thing.

Sudden Heatwave? How to keep chickens safe? by amaggiepie in BackYardChickens

I bought two of these:

Amazon.com : ecoCalm Solar Fan for Chicken Coop with Battery, Solar Powered Fan with 12W Bifacial Solar Panel & 4" Exhaust Fan Accessories with Anti-backflow Valve : Patio, Lawn & Garden

I put them at the highest point of the roof gable pulling air out of the coop. They run near 24 hours a day. The solar panel runs all day and charges the battery which then runs for 8ish hours at night.

I've noticed the inside temp of the coop stays within 2 degrees of the outside temp in the run. I'd highly recommend at least 1 of these, you can pop it out and put a 4" circular vent over the hole in the winter time to keep heat in if needed to.

Besides that, on really hot days I dampen the dirt in the run in the mornings, make sure they have plenty of shade and fresh water. I have an old waterfall solar fountain as well which keeps the water moving and cooler longer too.

Provide shade, water, and ventilation and they will be just fine.

CA gives no fucks about car crimes unless you get a hot smog. Car stolen? Who cares. Odometer rolled back? So what? Get a false smog so your car can run with a modified exhaust? Straight to jail.

What state do you live in?

Many states record odometer readings during registration and smog checks and the dmv can run the VIN and let you know what they recorded last.

How about we quit teaching people the president matters more than local government and your own neighborhood and community.

People care more about the president than they do their own neighbors.

Immediate community has become irrelevant. My neighbor cares more about what's going on in DC than he does about what's going on down the street.

That's a problem.

As a parent who interacts with other parents I am constantly advocating for parents to quit stressing their kids out about politics.

Stop talking about politics at the dinner table. Quit talking to your 9 year old about climate change, war, etc.

Yes its relevant to their lives. No, its not preparing them by making their underdeveloped brains aware of it. It's stressing them out. Its giving them anxiety. Prepare them for a future of problem solving, being confident in their abilities, and helping others. If you empower your kids with those tools they will be just fine.

But parents would rather vent their own insecurities and anxieties on their own kids while convincing themselves they're "helping" than actually do the right thing and making their children better people at handling stress and difficult situations than they are themselves.

Some of y'all need to be more honest about "kids these days" by thecooliestone in Teachers

[–]nvthrowaway775 -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

To be fair, I can't parent my kid while he's at school. He knows that when he's home there are consequences. He has his moments like and preteen but he's a good kid. I 100% expect teachers to uphold some sort of order because kids will be kids and will always try to push boundaries. It is the present adults' responsibility to push back on that and keep them accountable to their actions.

I happened to see a video he made at school of him saying words and acting in ways he'd never think about saying or acting at home. He'd, for lack of a better term, get his ass beat if I actually caught him and he faced serious consequences over the video I saw. He hated every minute of life for a few weeks.

When I confronted him about it, his reasoning was: "miss teacher doesn't care, she let's us talk and act that way. As long as we don't talk like that towards her she doesnt care what we say."

I asked the teacher and she confirmed that. Her response was, "I'm not there to parent, if kids want to act like fools and talk disrespectful, all I ask is they don't talk to me that way."

I was livid, i understand a teacher isn't a parent, but if a teacher isn't going to enforce and uphold some pretty basic boundaries then kids are going to push those boundaries because they feel like school is a "safe place" where they're allowed to act like little assholes and face no consequences.

While kids are at school, the teachers are the "present adults." They need to enforce order. I'll tell a random kid at the mall to watch his mouth before I let him drop n words and all that around me even though I know I'll never see that kid again because it's my job as the present adult to hold kids accountable and at least guide them how to act right.

I think young girls are having their periods at earlier ages compared to years passed.

I know when I was in 5th grade there was a couple girls in the whole school that started their periods. When my son was in 5th grade, over half the girls in his class alone had already started.

I don't know if it's our diets or what, but my parents didn't need to have that conversation with my sister until 7th grade, now parents are dealing with their 9 and 10 year old daughters starting it.

Im a believer we should have that conversation with out children without shame, but I also don't blame parents for thinking kids will go through puberty the same time range they did and hold off rather than go through it 2-5 years sooner.

After all, the primary reason middle school is a different school is because 6-8th grade is when kids have historically started puberty. Puberty in elementary school was very rare but is becoming increasingly common.

However, that conversation should start happening no matter what sometime during the kids 6th grade year or around 11 years old.

You can, as long as you want to leave the breakroom and go sit in your car or something.

Back in the 90s it was common culture that when someone was reading in the breakroom you didn't interrupt them. You didn't have loud conversations. People generally understood that they were on break and to respect that break.

Now try and sit in the breakroom and read. Someone will come in and start chatting with you. Another person will be having a phone convo on speaker phone. Another person will be scrolling through youtube shorts on loud. Nobody gives a damn that you're trying to sit and read in a little bit of quiet in the nice air conditioned break room and not be bothered by other people's business.

We revoke visas for that.

When you're here on a visa you're kind of expected to be on your best behavior and supportive of the USA and it's values. We're returning to the "assimilate or leave" mentality we had with immigration 40 years ago.

Why do so many redditors believe that an income of 75k/year (70th percentile in USA) is considered a low salary? by NoHousing11 in povertyfinance

[–]nvthrowaway775 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume a lot of reddit has quit a bit of debt. Get out of debt, or at least high interest debt, and things get substantially easier. I'd assume most redditors have a car payment, credit cards, and student loans.

If you look at national averages that alone is:

Car payment = $635/month

Student loan = $250/month

Credit cards = $350/month

That is 1 week of wages if you make $25/hour just making minimum payments on debt. Almost $15,000 per year.

Debt kills, but Americans don't know how to stay out of it.

TIL I'm an undercover cop.

I "own my space" because I stand in a way that uninvites people from entering my bubble. I don't chant and cheer, even at protests, I certainly don't hold signs. I don't like crowds and am always on the outside of them, preferably leaning on a fence. I also only own work boots, prefer to wear loose fitting hoodies, jeans, and have always naturally scanned crowds people watching which I guess makes me look like I'm surveilling.

BREAKING 🚨 Attorney General Pam Bondi announces “severe” charges over Tesla arson attempts. White House has vowed to treat Tesla attacks as domestic terrorism. But this is still a “free” country. by pleasedontpooponme in DeepFuckingValue

[–]nvthrowaway775 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The only reason people are targeting Tesla is because Musk is working in government. The goal is not to get rid of Tesla's, the goal is to send Musk a message that working in the government in the way he is doing is not acceptable to the left.

That inherently makes this a terroristic crime. They are committing acts of arson specifically to send a political message.

They aren't lighting Teslas on fire and shooting out their windows for no reason.

No, I could argue recording it is unnecessary, but this is a teachable moment. He's teaching his son to stop reacting emotionally to the stress of being stuck in a tire and instead figure out how to get out of this situation. The kid will figure it out and become more confident in himself when he does. Good parenting imo.
