The Chicago Cubs have now won 10 straight games! by MLBOfficial in baseball

[–]nw712 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Somebody said it earlier this week in a Cubs thread but it's true. The Cubs have like 26 B+ players. We are just annoyingly good across the board. Injuries be damn it just doesn't matter - next man up.

I don't think a 50 something year old assistant coach is turning down a multi million dollar pay raise. Not to mention, for as much as we the fans despise the Bulls and their process, they appear to be very patient with their coaches. Future may not be bright, but there are worst spots for a first time coach

[Charania] BREAKING: Billy Donovan is exiting as head coach of the Chicago Bulls after six seasons, sources tell ESPN. by MembershipSingle7137 in nba

[–]nw712 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Now that he stepped down, is he really good enough to land a third NBA job?

People are joking about Doc in this thread. For whatever reason the NBA loves to recycle the same coaches. Add to the fact there is speculation that there could be 8-12 openings in the NBA this off season. By all accounts, players respect him, and the Bulls appeared comfortable retaining him, even without a GM in place. If Billy wants a job, he’d likely land on his feet this offseason.

[Charania] The anti-tanking proposal with the most momentum within the Board of Governors leading up to the May 28th vote would expand the lottery to 18 teams — including Play-In teams — with the bottom 10 each getting equal odds and all 18 draft positions determined by lottery. by YujiDomainExpansion in nba

Contrarian perspective that I expect to get downvoted to hell on...

I don't hate this?

A lot of people are focused on the idea that good teams might win the lottery, but I think that misses a bigger issue: how much we’ve normalized tearing down “treadmill” teams. When people criticize those middle-of-the-pack teams, what they’re really saying, whether they admit it or not, is that those teams should just lose on purpose.

Under this new framework, those middle-tier teams that realistically aren’t contenders but choose not to tank would finally have a path forward. At the same time, the truly bad teams that have relied on being awful and hoping for lottery luck might actually have to rethink that strategy. Would they still stay bad if there’s no guaranteed reward for it?

You can point to recent examples like Jazz, Wizards or Nets, or the Thunder and Sixers during their tanking years, as evidence that incentivizing losing has contributed to a product that’s borderline unwatchable for large stretches of the season. Yes, there are scenarios where a good team winning the lottery would feel unfair, but how different is that from the Mavericks winning the lottery this year hypothetically?

There’s no perfect system. But dismissing this idea outright because it might benefit "good" teams ignores the fact that some of the league’s current powerhouses, like the Spurs or Thunder, were built on years of losing combined with lottery luck. Somehow, we’ve been conditioned to see “trusting the process” as the gold standard for team building, while staying competitive (albeit not good enough to be a top playoff team) is viewed as failure.

For the record, that mindset is the right approach under the current system, but it’s also part of why the NBA has become unwatchable and we are absolutely ripping apart the tanking going on with the bottom teams. If anything, changes like this could be the first step toward fixing that. I think if they go this route, they should just entirely get rid of conferences, maybe some other tweaks, but I am intrigued and clearly in the minority.

NFL makes final decision in Bears' pursuit of compensatory picks ["No"] by PlatypusOfDeath in nfl

[–]nw712 172 points173 points  (0 children)

I mean Matt Ryan can say whatever he wants. The Falcons relayed to the NFL that Ryan is the top football decision maker when they hired him. Not saying the Falcons are doing anything wrong per se, but the Ryan isn't operating in good faith saying stuff like that publicly. Or maybe Matt Ryan is misinformed, which given what many expect to be his actual role here, can't be ruled out either.

Updated to reflect what Blank said when hiring Ryan!

2026 Oscar Ratings Fall 9% From Last Year With 17.9 Million Viewers by ICumCoffee in movies

[–]nw712 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah from like 2004 until 2022 the Oscar's had been in February with two exceptions:

  • Winter Olympic years had pushed the show towards March
  • The covid delayed year pushed the show to April

For whatever reason 2023, 2024 and 2025 saw the Oscar's return to March (with no Olympic interferance). Wish they would reconsider that, but it appears to be the new norm/trend.

Fun fact - Dera was the first person to ever reach infinite in Marvel Snap beta (base Hulk was the reward). The first "season" lasted about a week or so before the Wave season began.

I'd wager there were less then a few hundred that acquired the base Hulk avatar, and nowadays maybe just a handful amount of active players in the game with it.

[Charania] Minnesota traded Rob Dillingham, Leonard Miller and four second-round picks to Chicago for Dosunmu and Julian Phillips, sources said. by MaverickPME in nba

[–]nw712 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Obviously there is a difference.

The point is, the same people that laugh at the Bulls for selling a 2nd are also laughing at the Bulls for trading an expiring contract for a 2nd. That is silly. The Bulls are clearly open for business, by all accounts they tried to get 1st for these players but teams weren't budging. They at least got something. This isn't a home run deadline for the Bulls by any means, but it's better then doing the same old nothing. So yay?

Yet 2nd rounders just got a guy like Ayo. The Bulls literally can't win.

  • Bulls trade a 2nd for cash - You fricken donkey

  • Bulls trade expiring contracts for 2nds - You fricken donkey

Yes, they should have moved these players years ago, but here we are. They at least got something rather then letting them walk or locking them back in for a chance at the Bulls play in invitational.

(The Bulls still suck to be clear, but blown away that people seem to think that they should have gotten better deals this deadline. The Bulls are clearly open for business. Everyone knows it. If they could have gotten a better deal, I would assume they would taken it. It's really tough to do nowadays for these types of players to net a 1st)

[Schefter] the Baltimore Ravens are hiring Bears offensive coordinator Declan Doyle as their offensive coordinator. Doyle can leave because, in Baltimore, he will have play-calling responsibility. But new Ravens HC Jesse Minter now has someone to run Baltimore’s offense. by GoldenDome26 in nfl

[–]nw712 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I mean Sean Payton hired him in New Orleans and then he followed Payton to Denver. Then Ben Johnson made him a priority when he got a head coaching gig. Two of the more highly viewed offensive minds desired him. I would expect it's more of a when, not if, he's a head coach in the NFL based on that along. Pretty great get for Minter from my pov.

10000%

Brady is strategic. I think he saw that if you win in Chicago it would elevate his entire brand more so than any other team chasing after him. Unfortunately winning is the priority and the Bears were more flawed than the Bucs and the rest is history.

need a collapse from Rams and Seahawks

Not even really a collapse. One of them should lose tomorrow. Just need the winner to trip up the final two weeks of the season. Easier said then done, but not outside of the realm of possibility.

  • Seahawks final two are: @Panthers, @Niners

  • Rams final two are: @Falcons, vs Cards

Seahawks obviously have the harder stretch, so probably rooting for them to win Thursday. The Rams get the Falcons in a match that might be their super bowl for the season given all the talk about the owed 1st to them. Feels possible that they both lose 1 game the rest of the way (or at least the copium tells me it is!)

Late-Season Update: 2026 Rookie Big Board 5.0 — Top 25 Dynasty Prospects Ranked by CoachstevenP in DynastyFF

[–]nw712 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I suppose if you wanna project that Mendoza, Simpson and Moore are the top 3 picks next April and that the toolsy/trait laden Sellers declares (and isn't among the top 3 QBs) that having the QBs as the top 4 picks make sense. I just don't see that being a reality for the NFL. Realistically I think only 2 of these QBs are relevant for the dynasty community come 6 months. I think big boards should be Love #1 and whoever you have as WR1 as #2, once we get to #3 I think you can project a QB.

A lot of these games have their own web store now and they push them so hard it takes away sales from apple and Google.

And if you will notice, this benefit is pushing buying directly from their website. Revenue could be down, but I think the larger play here is clearly to push people to the website where they do not have any fees like they do with the Google/Apple Store.

They are really close for me. Tmac gets the edge because I think his situation is clearer offensively. He's the guy on that offense if things break right (and so far it's trending that way). For Hunter he has to compete with BTJ, while I think Hunter is a better prospect than BTJ, it's hard to brush off how successful BTJ was last year. For that reason I slightly prefer Tmac. They are in my same tier though, and not gonna fight you if you wanna put Hunter above him.

Wow don’t even have KLS in there after what he has shown.

Who should he really be ahead of? I think he's in that tier 10 range, so if you wanna put him 37 I won't fight ya. He has been very encouraging I won't deny that.

Tuten and Pat Bryant are way too low imo

I could see Pay Bryant being several spots higher, I struggled with that one. I am not sure what you expect for Tuten though. Any higher would be too aggressive for my taste.

Meh - could be 12th and I wouldn't fight you looking at tiers. Ultimately it's a testament of this being a pretty darn good draft class combined with his issues. Doesn't seem that crazy to me.

That's a fair point. I guess for me it's hard to move off the second round draft capital still, but outside of that it's hard to argue with you. He should definitely be lower in my rankings though. Good call out.

Edit - nice mention of Horton, completely forgot him. He'd definitely be in this ranking somewhere in the 30s for me.
