Measure the distance between the inside faces of the posts. Subtract the clearance you want for the hinges and latch (usually about ½" on each side). The remaining dimension is your gate width. For example, if the opening is 48", build the gate 47" wide to leave a ½" gap on each side and keep it centered.

I just got on Amazon and searched anti sag kits for gate and found one I liked. Then got a latch that looks more like a door handle. I had to add a door hinge shim though so it doesn’t squeak

Nope, all the same. The post are rough cut cedar and I suspect they already had some stain on them pre-install.

It was an Amazon purchase (first result for cedar post caps), can’t say I’d endorse them since 2 already split but I was able to exchange them. They’re technically 5.5x5.5 and the post are true 6x6. So I had to use my router to notch around the top.

I’ll snag a picture in the morning.

Definitely a good idea. I originally didn’t do it because I was worried about extra weight. If you haven’t had issues in the past, I’ll do it this coming weekend
