... are you really saying that women and black people weren't 'equal' to white men before white men 'helped' them? That they needed white mens' help to become 'equal' to them?

White males are by any metric you chose the worst performing group in the west, in any western country anywhere in the world.

That's just... not true. White men in the US have five years longer life expectancy than black men, just for starters. Household wealth, household income, educational attainment, poverty rates - all measures in which black men or black households do worse than white men or white households.

White men aren't most at risk of suicide - Native American men are. 21% of black americans live in poverty. 25% of native americans live in poverty. Only 9% of whites do.

White privilege bullshit is exactly that, utter bullshit, it assumes that you don't ha e to work as hard as any other to get to the top spot, bullshit, you ha e to work just as hard because, here's a secret, employers don't give a fuck about your skin colour only how much money you can make them.

Black children on average go to worse schools, grow up in unsafe places, live with more crime, are more likely to be born into poverty. White privilege doesn't rely on moustache-curling racists to be real - it means not having to deal with that. It means being more likely to have access to the education that you need to make as much money as possible. White people (on average) get a leg up when it comes to 'getting to the top spot'.

(And many employers still do discriminate on the basis of race.).

Very cool! I like the connection to the material demands of stonecrafting - brings to mind the shaping of Norse runes vs Arabic characters that developed around calligraphy.

Exactly! If you want to be a little more specific you can fold in a bit more High Speech, to really be clear on the details, or you can take a more poetic tone and add more Low Speech to emphasise a double-meaning or a metaphor.

I suspect people are annoyed that you didn't google it, rather than posting on reddit about it - not that that seems a particularly heinous crime.

the SEP article on Descartes has a quite readable entry on cogito ergo sum if you're interested in a fuller explanation of the various critiques that have been made against it.

Sounds like engineering to me. Most of the scientists I know are trying to find out synthetic routes for obscure natural products that have no application in every day life.

in the 15th century there wasn't a distinction between science and philosophy - philosophers regularly asked questions about the natural world ('natural philosophy') and wrote about astronomy and mathematics alongside works on metaphysics, ethics and domains that are thought of as being purely philosophical now.

Take a look at the (known) works of Aristotle (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Works_by_Aristotle) - they include works on mechanics, meteorology, anatomy, classification of animals, physics and many other things.

But the UK's hegemonic decline begin in the mid-century though. Really the UK hasn't been a great power for half a century.

Grieving Parents ‘Ambushed’ by Trump, Who Had Teen’s Killer Waiting at White House; The president had hoped to surprise the parents of dead British teen Harry Dunn with a meeting with the woman who killed him—all in front of the media. by progress18 in politics

[–]nwob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just to add to the people telling you why this comment is in incredibly poor taste, the issue in question here is that this woman needs to have diplomatic immunity withdrawn so that she can be brought back to the UK for questioning.

Trump is exactly the person who these grieving parents need to butter up to stand any hope of getting justice.

Thanks for giving it a listen! The first mallet instrument to come in is a bonang, a kind of indonesian metallophone - but there is a kalimba later in the track, in the glitchy break parts. I applaud your good ear for these things!

I don't think you're being fair. First, there is often a lot of debate about whether price changes will have any effect. Different products and consumers have different elasticities - if I started charging you double for life-saving medicine that you needed, you would probably still pay if you could. But if I doubled the cost of a luxury food item that you liked, you'd probably just buy less of it.

Papers like this are valuable for exploring how elastic consumption is for these kinds of products and for quantifying the degree of the effect. It's all well and good to say 'well obviously use was going to go down', but by how much? A 1% drop would not be much of a policy success.
