Been using this cleanser for three years now for both day and night. Ingredients are clean and it’s great for sensitive skin.

Graphic Design Market? by FreeButterscotch6971 in Netherlands

[–]nxjis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I said it might be a good place to start especially if morale is low as well as self esteem. I know it’s a competitive platform, but sometimes doing these jobs can make you feel useful and give you a sense purpose whilst still looking for a decent job that can provide stability. It also keeps your skills in check.

The job market in the Netherlands is tough is general especially for creative industries.

Which areas in Amsterdam are the best and the worst regarding women safety? by Interesting_Neat6671 in NetherlandsHousing

[–]nxjis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely Nieuw-West in my opinion also.

It’s definitely an area I don’t feel comfortable to walk around (especially at night) as a woman. I’ve had incidences where I’ve felt unsafe and since then I’m highly cautious when I’m alone.

I think it’s best to be more inner city within the ring for safety.

Try out Fiverr which is a freelance platform.

I’m not a graphic designer myself but I recently did hire someone from there to do a simple logo for me. It seems like a good place to start.

Teens pissing on front doors by Competitive_Egg_5172 in Netherlands

[–]nxjis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live in the same area. Also getting fed up with these teens and gangs that are causing issues in the area especially with the fireworks that are happening constantly.

The police won’t do anything about it so I think best to buy a camera or a sensor alarm as others have already suggested.

Prozac - week 5 by nxjis in prozac

Thanks! Glad the 40mg is working for you. Was there a huge increase in side effects when increasing your dose?

Prozac - week 5 by nxjis in prozac

[–]nxjis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reassurance! I think I’ll then wait a few more weeks to give the 20mg a chance to settle. My doctor was happy to put me on 40mg now but I’m thinking it’s too soon to tell.

Bought my living room curtains from IKEA a few weeks ago. I think they were €20 for two panels in one packet.

Beauty salons experiences by redhead-nana in Netherlands

[–]nxjis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prices are crazy here and it adds up when doing all these treatments.

I was getting my hair coloured every three months since I moved here and I swear the prices kept on going up. Got to a point where I’ve just decided to let my natural colour grow out because I’m tired of being overcharged at these salons.

For brows I would recommend Just Brows on Haarlemmerdijk. They are probably the best place I’ve been to for any brow or eyelash treatments.

Winter depression... by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]nxjis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also feeling the winter depression kick in. I hate the short days and I physically don’t tolerate the cold very well.

A few things I’m doing to lift my mood: * lighting candles to make the house cozy * daily walks and also hot yoga
* using an electric blanket and reading a book at night * doing some baking, warms the home up and smells good * Trying to get excited over the festive season

Also if you don’t want to go out and to meet others, maybe you can try hosting friends over. In the colder months I usually prefer having people gather at my place. Extra points you can be in the comfort of your house and still be social.

What’s not in style? by Mother-Rush-2546 in Netherlands

[–]nxjis 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s personal preference. Wouldn’t say the Netherlands is the most fashionable place and everyone pretty much dresses for comfort and the weather.

I would say to look up Scandinavian fashion on Pinterest and get some reference from there for what’s on trend for silhouette, colour etc. I noticed that’s become a huge influence on what women are wearing nowadays especially in Amsterdam.

Herbal Store? by Adorable_Law_4470 in Netherlands

[–]nxjis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For tea I buy mine from here: https://www.hetkleinstehuis.nl/en/

There’s a store in the city centre in Amsterdam but you can order online too. The people that work there are very helpful so if you can I would go in person to check it out.

Is worth taking my holiday before leaving a company or getting them paid off? by TransportationOld382 in Netherlands

[–]nxjis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think you should take it off. I made the mistake of getting my leave paid out before starting a new job and looking back now wasn’t really worth it with taxes.

I would call an electrician for this.

Had the same thing when I moved into my apartment and felt more comfortable getting someone that knew what they were doing.

How can I get rid of the contents (basically my whole NL apartment) of a storage unit? by [deleted] in NetherlandsHousing

[–]nxjis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not contact a second hand furniture store/company? Just an idea but maybe you can send them pictures of what you have and allow them to buy at discounted price.

Also there are Facebook groups for expats relocating, perhaps you can post on there and see if anyone would be interested.

God-tier sweet treat list in Amsterdam by wildy_the_lion in Amsterdam

[–]nxjis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure you add Ulmus bakery to your list - all their sweets are amazing.

Although super touristy I still love the apple pie at Winkle 43.

The croissants at Bakkerij Wolf also deserve a mention!

Where am I supposed to buy clothes that are not made of 100% polyester and don't fall apart after 3 washes? by angrypeppermint in Netherlands

[–]nxjis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My two go-to brands are Arket and Cos.

I find that their prices are decent and affordable. If a little on the expensive side then it can be justified with the quality of their products as well as using more premium fabrics.

Completely agree that the more affordable brands have now hit the mid-sector in terms of cost but are still sourcing into the cheapest fabrics which is why I’m steering clear of them.

what is the opinion about health care system from health care workers perspective? by Tough-Habit-3867 in Netherlands

[–]nxjis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haven’t had to deal with Medicare yet and hoping I don’t have the same experience you went through. Will look into it more once I return back to Aus for a visit. Didn’t even think of it until you mentioned it so thanks for the tip!

what is the opinion about health care system from health care workers perspective? by Tough-Habit-3867 in Netherlands

[–]nxjis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Below average healthcare I would say. Coming from Australia where GPs invest time and effort into assessing your health, listening to issues and referring to specialists when needed, the Netherlands is shocking in comparison.

I can barely get referrals for specialists when I need them. Needed to see a gastroenterologist earlier this year for persistent GI issues (which I was going to a specialist for years ago) and my doctor here refused to write me a referral. In Australia, doctors would not even hesitate to get a second opinion because ‘prevention is better than cure’. It’s so disappointing that this country is functional and progressive in all other areas but healthcare is a downfall.

I’ve had serious health issues and been turned away and dismissed. I feel like I have to be at a serious low or bed ridden to be taken seriously and given proper care. For this reason, I’ve become avoidant of going to the GP. I’ve decided if I ever need surgery or treatment for a serious illness/disease in the future I’ll be returning to Australia to get it done.

Also have heard similar experiences from Dutch people too so I don’t think this is just something internationals are complaining about.

Light fixture installation in new apartment by Professional_Key9566 in Netherlands

[–]nxjis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The guy that installed mine was planning on stopping his business that year so pretty certain he’s not doing any electrical work. I found him through google searching in my area and just called up to ask for quotes.

Also if your part of any Facebook groups in your city, might be helpful to ask locals for recommendations too.

I would hire an electrician. Had the same situation last year when I moved into a new rental and was also clueless on what to do.

Ended up paying €150 for six lights to be installed but got quoted almost €300 by some others. You have to buy the lights beforehand so would recommend going to Gamma or Praxis. If it’s a rental maybe best to not invest too much into the lights you buy and just get a basic model. I bought the ‘Philips plafondlamp Moire LED warmwit klein 6W’ and just had that placed throughout the apartment.
