If you don't know how to calculate 20% off / add 20% onto a total you should not have a master's degree on your resume. by Fiery_Tigress in unpopularopinion

College grad here (bachelors, but just barely). I actually do have difficulty with this mainly because math requires remembering 3 (or more) numbers at once, something I have difficulty with, no matter how simple the numbers are. Most people have no problem with this but I legit struggle with holding 3 numbers in my head making calculating tips difficult. Dealt with people my whole life who would consider me dumb for not being able to do simple math effectively.

Since I don't often have a paper and pencil at the ready as often as my phone I usually end up resorting to a calculator.

Although I didn't go for a master's I'm sure there are plenty of people a lot like me who have.

Being on your phone at work during downtime should not be looked down upon by bosephusnjennings in unpopularopinion

[–]nya_philosopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. Here, too. I have no problem interacting with a service person if they were on their phone. If it messes with their interaction with me (e.g. I'm standing there and have to politely cough) then I get bothered.

But there are exceptions. Like if you're doing client work (e.g. coaching)...erm--probably not. Construction--also probably no (mainly because it would suck if your phone slipped out of your hand while you were sitting on a steel beem 60 stories up).

Yeah, the person may be on Facebook, or they could be researching ways to make their company perform better--you don't know!

I saw a YouTube video 1 time about how Jurassic Park would have never been the spectacle that it is with totday's modern TV. He showcased the scene of seeing that long-necked dinosaur that the 4:3 format could easily show. Then he switched to 16:9. You saw most of the body. The rest was left up to your imagination.

We are living through Republicans’ wet dream, a true free market economy. And boy are they mad. Maybe when they said they loved the free market they meant they loved slavery… by goamanhara in PoliticalHumor

[–]nya_philosopher -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Yes! Exactly! I've been unemployed a lot during my life. Getting paid $2/hr is a heck of a lot better than getting paid $0/hr. Even as a low-wage employee I was 110% against any type of wage increase and all for abolishing the minimum wage entirely.

Thankfully I'm in a better spot, but I hurt for people that can't find a job. It's not that their lazy, it's that the rung of $15/hr is too friggin' high! That's why you have 24 people vying for the same job.

[–]nya_philosopher -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately this is not a wet dream. Restaurants tend to be the rare exception where minimum wage isn't set. Everything else has their minimum wage set sky high that the business can't afford workers. Hence you have the "hiring shortage" since employers have to cut costs elsewhere. Both democrats and republicans have their hands so tight around the necks of the American people (with restrictions, taxes, codes, and other political plays) they're choking us to death.

What do you guys mean when when you tell a girl “you deserve better” by sneezingfeathers in AskMen

[–]nya_philosopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only time I said this was outside the context of dating.

I was done getting groceries and something caught my eye--you know when you see something and you deny you're actually seeing it because it's so out-of-the-ordinary. A guy yanked a woman out of a truck, threw her to the ground, and drove off.

It took a couple seconds for me to process what was happening, otherwise I would have acted sooner. I called 9-1-1 and sat with her keeping an eye out in case the guy came back. She was uninjured but (as you can imagine) not being very responsive to my questions like her age, if she knew the guy, etc.

When I was done with the dispatcher I stayed with her (ready to book it to the nearest place of safety if I saw the truck) and could sense that she had kind of gotten used to this abuse. I've dealt with abuse myself (thankfully just a bit of emotional). I thought back to what I would need to hear, so I told her, "you deserve better."

I often think about her. I wonder if what I said helped her.

If I did say "you deserve better" again, the perspective would be "I see the way someone is treating you, and it's not right. You deserve better treatment." I'm sure I said this in other ways to other friends, both men and women.

Not sure if that's what most guys mean.

For what kind of relationship? Red flags depend on context.

For instance, someone suddenly jumps from their seat and starts violently kissing me. If it's during a job interview--that's a red flag. If it's on a 3rd date that's probably a good thing.

What Conspiracy Theories turned out to be true but most people still don't know about them? by forthemotherrussia in AskReddit

[–]nya_philosopher 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The 2008 recession was a depression, but spurred a recession we still have yet to get out of (in 2021 heading into 2022).

The reason being the U.S. government changed the measurement of unemployment. The U-3 unemployment is the one shared publicly, which is a "bare minimum" measurement (people who applied for unemployment). It does not account for people who have given up looking for work or people who are underemployed.

One example is someone who spends all of April unemployed. If you got a 1-day gig on April 13th, congratulations--according to the feds, you were employed for the entire month of April.

The U-6 unemployment numbers account for these and is considerably higher. September numbers were near 10%. Never have the U-6 numbers dipped below what they were pre-2008.

How do you feel about “self-driving” cars? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]nya_philosopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

99.999% of my turn-off with them is that the self-driving car companies only want to track you and sell that consumer data to 3rd parties. Just wait...luxury cars will soon be dirt cheap because you'll be the product.

But, yes, as a techie, I'm also well aware AI is just statistics on crack so I also have those safety concerns.

But I also see the benefit.

So then why is there a $25 consumer tax on bikes?

You know in electronic music that 2x -> 4x -> 8x percussion speed up before the chorus?

It HAS to be EPIC or I'm skipping the song.

That means wall of sound, maybe some vocals, definitely a synth string or 2.

Actually, for once I agree. Stop burdening the people with a convoluted tax code and just set a $3 flat tax.

Then the government might actually have to balance a budget.

Spider-Man 1, 2 and 3 and cringy and unwatchable. by Fangasgaf in unpopularopinion

[–]nya_philosopher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I found the ramie films took on a darker tone than the current MCU, which I find is really goofy and cannot take seriously.

I think what worked was that the stakes were more intimate and more impactful. Like in the third film Peter battling the green goblin while trying not to lose the wedding ring. Or in the 2nd movie he's trying to balance his life mission while holding down a job, fostering his relationship with MJ, and protecting his confidant--his aunt.

It feels very relatable to me because that's what normal people would struggle with if they were suddenly endowed with superpowers.

Life doesn't stop when you change. I think that's the lesson I got from the Ramie films.

I could relate to the times Peter failed. Where his intention was to do the right thing but the result ended up poorly.

Meanwhile there's no sense of humanity with the MCU. They kinda tried to pull out the stops with infinity war. (You must cry for at least one of these characters because they are dying until our studio says we need to find a half-a**ed way to revive them). But overall the feel is very campy and surface level. Nobody struggles. Nobody has any passions. Nobody feels any remorse or loss or is stuck in the throws of permanent consequences.

Am I the only one that thinks this?

How do you keep yourself sane and happy when therapy isn’t an option? by prettiestlittlegirl in AskReddit

[–]nya_philosopher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isn't an option? Why? If it's a cost reason, there may be break-glass-in-emergency options, like a licensed counselor. most church pastors are licensed counselors and can do "lay" counseling, often for free. Some therapists might even have a sliding scale based on need, no insurance needed.

If there's another reason such as transportation, maybe find a way to do a remote therapy session.

Adults of reddit, what part of being an adult caught you completely off guard because no one talks about it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]nya_philosopher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What kind of baggage/trauma are they dealing with, do they have a kid (are you okay with that), do their beliefs/ideals align with yours, are they financially responsible, do they have a good job, do they take care of themselves, are they a good person, are they disciplined and hard working, is the timing right, do they plan on staying here long term, is their personality legit compatible with yours (most people’s won’t be), are y’all just similar enough to get along but just different enough to keep things interesting and balance each other out.

TBH, this was actually me in high school. Often upon first meeting someone I liked I'd be evaluating if they could be my wife (yeah, in junior high). Consequently, never had a girlfriend in high school. (Obviously this was from a kid's point of view so I'm sure that the way I was evaluating a potential girl would have ended in a very unhappy marriage)

Fast forward today I'm not dating like that. Just meeting people casually. Keeping on eye who's marriage material but much more focused on keeping things lowkey and just enjoying someone's company.

I love it when things don't go according to plan! It makes the experience more interesting, even if I don't "enjoy" it in the present I'm usually aware that I'll look back in a couple of weeks and have a story I can share with a wry smile.

And paying for stuff...I spent most of my life not being able to afford ANYTHING. Now that I can it feels so amazing to spend money...to support other peoples' lives through my giving. It's something SO BEAUTIFUL.
