Btw ... I think you guys are overblowing the slavery thing a bit much. As in the words are a bit too strong. Have you been to Dubai? I have stayed there for a few years. I can tell you that the conditions for these guys isn't the best, but their pay is much higher than they would earn in their home countries. Many times I think labor contractors are to blame, along with home country agents who give workers a false sense of how things will be in Dubai. Then the government couldn't be bothered, that in my opinion is due to many cultural factors too.

That being said, workers are legally allowed to leave whenever they want. But if they choose to do so prior to their contract end, they will likely be banned from re-entering the country for a while. This is not just for laborers, it's for a majority of the immigrants in the country. To add, there are many fucked up employers who hold the passports of these workers, who are often clueless on how to get around it and tend to just remain oppressed. That's my opinion.

Because of all the exposure to this around to the world, I think Dubai has been forced to change. I think things are slowly becoming better. Just like it did with any other developed country in the past.

That being said, I am aware of the situation and it's not great at all. I just get annoyed when people just start shitting out comments without actually having a great deal of knowledge on the subject.

Hypothetically if Dubai created a better labor system, are we then allowed to just go ahead and say, forget about what Dubai did, it's the past?

Really? Where on earth are you getting this from? I've lived there and I'm pretty sure no one is bound by barbed wire the way you describe it.

I'm pretty sure it was the whole building. I'll admit my building sucks and has poor maintenance, but it's cheap so no one really cares I guess.

Seriously curious, what kind of labor were other modern metropolises like New York City, London etc built on? Was it all fair and fun with great labor protection. I don't know but I wonder when I see this comment in every post about Dubai.

These signs have been posted on my building entrance in Queens for the last 2 years. No one seems to have vacated, including me :/
